Methods For The Study Of Signaling Molecules In Membrane Lipid Rafts And Caveolae, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Paul A. Insel

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Lipid rafts and caveolae are cholesterol- and sphingolipid-rich microdomains of the plasma membrane that concentrate components of certain signal transduction pathways. Interest in and exploration of these microdomains has grown in recent years, especially after the discovery of the biochemical marker of caveolae, caveolin, and the recognition that caveolin interacts with many different signaling molecules via its scaffolding domain. There are three major types of caveolins (1, 2, and 3), with some selectivity in their expression in different tissues. Results assessing lipid raft/caveolae co-localization of molecules in signal transduction pathways have provided support for the idea that signaling components are …

Self-Determination In International Mediation: Some Preliminary Reflections, Jacqueline Nolan-Haley Jan 2006

Self-Determination In International Mediation: Some Preliminary Reflections, Jacqueline Nolan-Haley

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Few concepts have generated as much discussion in the postwar international legal system as that of "self-determination." Scholars debate the proper identity of the "selves" endowed with this right, its boundaries and its normative relevance. When the focus turns to mediation, the discussion becomes murky because the concept of self-determination has both procedural and substantive components and is noticeably different in the private and public sectors.

Ammonium Uptake And Growth Kinetics Of Pseudomonas Putida Pga1, Mohamad Suffian Mohamad Annuar, Irene Kit Ping Tan, Shaliza Ibrahim, K.B. Ramachandran Jan 2006

Ammonium Uptake And Growth Kinetics Of Pseudomonas Putida Pga1, Mohamad Suffian Mohamad Annuar, Irene Kit Ping Tan, Shaliza Ibrahim, K.B. Ramachandran

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Ammonium uptake kinetics of low specific growth rate cultures of Pseudomonas putida PGA1, a gram negative fluorescent pseudomonad, which is an important producer of poly(3-hydroxyalkanoates) (PHA) molecules, were studied. The ammonium uptake follows a first-order kinetics model, indicating that the micro-organism’s specific uptake rate of ammonium and its growth would increase as the ammonium ion concentrations become higher. Optimal ammonium uptake and growth rates were observed at 0.1 gL-1 ammonium ion in aqueous medium. It also indicated that the ammonium transport mechanism is probably inducible by ammonium concentration. The limit of ammonium ion level increase before cells stop growing completely …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Ovitrap surveillance was conducted in four dengue endemic areas in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Malaysia to determine the distribution and percentage of mixed breeding of both Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The percentage of mixed breeding in all study sites both indoors and outdoors accounted for 10 to 32 from the total ovitraps collected. Ae. aegypti was found at a higher frequency than Ae. albopictus in these ovitraps. This study again indicates that ovitrap is a sensitive tool to attract gravid females of more than one mosquito species to oviposit in the container.

Production Of Medium-Chain-Length Poly (3-Hydroxyalkanoates) From Saponified Palm Kernel Oil By Pseudomonas Putida: Kinetics Of Batch And Fed-Batch Fermentations, M.S.M. Annuar, I.K.P. Tan, S. Ibrahim, K.B. Ramachandran

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The kinetics of medium-chain-length poly(3-hydroxyalkanoates), PHAMCL production by Pseudomonas putida PGA1 in batch and fed-batch fermentations were studied. With saponified palm kernel oil (SPKO) supplying the free fatty acids mixture as the sole carbon and energy source, PHAMCL accumulation is encouraged under ammonium-limited condition, which is a nitrogen stress environment. The amount of PHAMCL accumulated and its specific production rate, qPHA were influenced by the residual ammonium concentration level in the culture medium. It was observed that in both fermentation modes, when the residual ammonium was exhausted (< 0.05 gL-1), the PHAMCL accumulation (11.9) and qPHA (0.0062 h-1) were significantly reduced. However, this effect can be reversed by feeding low amount of ammonium to the culture, resulting in significantly improved PHAMCL yield (71.4) and specific productivity (0.6 h-1). It is concluded that the feeding of low ammonium concentration to the culture medium during the PHAMCL accumulation has a positive effect on sustaining the PHAMCL biosynthetic capability of the organism. It was also found that increasing SPKO concentration in the medium significantly reduced (up to 50) the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (KLa) of the fermentation system.

Some Aspects On Oviposition Behaviour Of Spodoptera Exigua (Hã¼Bner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), A.A. Azidah, Mohd Sofian-Azirun

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Spodoptera exigua females oviposit on any host plant offered to them. However, they do show oviposition preference among the host plants. The hierarchy of oviposition preference in the three choice test was reflected in the five choice test. The oviposition hierarchy is shallot > long beans > chilly > cabbage > lady's finger. The females prefer to lay eggs on the host plant leaves especially on the abaxial compared to the other part of the plant. Besides that, the females also prefer to lay eggs on the cage. The leaves and leaf stalk position did not influence the oviposition preference.

Development Of An Electro-Mechanical System To Identify & Map Adverse Soil Compaction Using Gis&Gps, Santosh Pitla, L. G. Wells

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A stand-alone electro-mechanical system with a 32-inch disc coulter was developed and tested to identify soil compaction in a 1-acre field located at the University of Kentucky Animal Research Center (UKARC). The system was evaluated by making four passes in the square grid cell. With the aid of hydraulic actuation, the coulter oscillated between depths of 100mm (4-in) and 330mm (13-in) as it moved forward and recorded the vertical impedance force given by the soil continuously. Forty standard soil cone penetrometer measurements along the diagonals to a depth of 400mm (16-in) were taken and the average cone indices (MPa) at …
