Endothelial Cell Cortactin Phosphorylation By Src Contributes To Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte Transmigration In Vitro, L. Yang, Jennifer R. Kowalski, X. Zhan, S. M. Thomas, F. W. Luscinskas
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The underlying mechanisms that regulate leukocyte transendothelial migration through the vascular endothelium remain unclear. Cortactin is a substrate of Src tyrosine kinases and a regulator of cytoskeletal dynamics. Previous studies demonstrated a role for Src phosphorylation of cortactin in clustering of E-selectin and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 around adherent leukocytes. In the current study, we used an in vitro flow model to investigate the role of Src-induced cortactin phosphorylation in endothelium during polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) transmigration through human umbilical vein endothelium (HUVEC) monolayers preactivated with tumor necrosis factor-{alpha}. Inhibition of Src in HUVEC using Src kinase inhibitors PP2 and SU6656 …

Purpose:Although anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is an effective treatment for many patients with medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), one risk associated with this procedure is postsurgical decline in memory. A substantial number of past studies examined factors that predict memory decline after surgery, but few have investigated multiple predictors simultaneously or considered measures that are currently in use.
Methods: This study compared the relative contributions made by presurgical neuropsychological test scores, MRI-based hippocampal volumetric analysis, and Wada test results to predicting memory outcome after ATL in a group of 87 patients.
Results: Logistic regression analyses indicated that noninvasive …

An Examination Of Agonistic Interactions In The Whip Spider Phrynus Marginemaculatus (Arachnida, Amblypygi), Kasey D. Fowler-Finn, Eileen Hebets
Eileen Hebets Publications
Intraspecific interactions in adult whip spiders (Phrynus marginemaculatus) were investigated in a laboratory setting to quantify agonistic interactions and to determine predictors of contest outcome. Males were initially paired with size-symmetric or size-asymmetric opponents to assess the effect of size symmetry on contests. Three weeks later, the same males were paired with either the same opponent, or a different opponent to determine whether or not individuals remember earlier encounters. Finally, we quantified aspects of female-female contests. Agonistic encounters between males are characterized by varying degrees of pedipalpal opening, elevation displays, and rapid flicking (~ 29 Hz) of the …
Rationalizing Software Patents: Suggestions For A Livable System, Shane Glynn
Rationalizing Software Patents: Suggestions For A Livable System, Shane Glynn
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
In examining the historical development of software as patentable subject matter, the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court and Federal Circuit, the Patent and Trademark Office's regulations and guidelines, and the application of these rules in the legal and business community, this article explores the deficiencies of the current US software patent system. The article argues that by increasing patent examiners' knowledge of computer science and publishing domestic patent applications to allow competitors to search for relevant prior art, the US software patent system can be significantly improved.

Environmental Effects On Pregnancy Rate In Beef Cattle, J. L. Amundson, Terry L. Mader, Richard J. Rasby, Q. S. Hu
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Ten years of calving records were examined from Bos taurus crossbred cows (mean of 182 cows/ yr) to quantify the effects of environmental conditions during the breeding season on pregnancy rate. Estimated breeding dates were determined by subtracting 283 d from the calving date. Relationships were determined between the proportion of cows bred during the periods from the beginning of the breeding season until d 21, 42, and 60 of the breeding season and the corresponding environmental variables. Weather data were compiled from a weather station located approximately 20 km from the research site. Average daily temperature and relative humidity …

Correlated Responses In Maternal Performance Following Divergent Selection For Heat Loss In Mice, J. M. Mcdonald, Merlyn . K. Nielsen
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Divergent selection in mice was applied in 3 independent replicates for high (maintenance high; MH) and low (maintenance low; ML) heat loss for 16 generations. An unselected control (maintenance control; MC) was also maintained in all replicates. Selection ceased for 26 generations; heat-loss measurement and selection resumed at generation 42. Lactation performance, dam weight, dam feed intake, and efficiency of production of pup weight were recorded or calculated for MH and ML dams in all 3 replicates at generation 46 or 47 with the objective of determining whether selection for heat loss has created correlated responses in maternal performance. One-half …

Decreased Reproductive Investment Of Female Threespine Stickleback Gasterosteus Aculeatus Infected With The Cestode Schistocephalus Solidus: Parasite Adaptation, Host Adaptation, Or Side Effect?, Eric T. Schultz, Michelle Topper, David C. Heins
EEB Articles
Parasitic infections may cause alterations in host life history, including changes in reproductive investment (absolute amount of energy allocated to reproduction) and reproductive effort (proportion of available energy allocated to reproduction). Such changes in host life history may reflect: 1) a parasite tactic: the parasite adaptively manipulates energy flow within the host so that the host is induced to make a reduction in reproductive effort and reproductive investment, making more energy available to the parasite; 2) no tactic: there is no change in host reproductive effort and reproductive investment simply decreases as a side effect of the parasite depleting host …

This Article examines the history of laws and policies regulating consumption of alcoholic beverages by young people in the United States, and examines youth drinking patterns that have emerged over time. Currently, all 50 states have a minimum drinking age of 21. Various rationales are offered for the 21 drinking age, such as the claim that earlier drinking hinders cognitive functions, and the claim that earlier drinking increases the lifetime risk of becoming an alcoholic. While there is sufficient evidence to support the claim that it would be better for adolescents and young adults if they did not drink prior …

Calpain 10: Mitochondrial Localization, Function, And Substrates, David Darrell Arrington
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The calpain family of cysteine proteases has undergone intense study since its discovery in 1976. Although numerous functions and proteolytic substrates have been linked to this 14-member family, little is known about the five atypical calpain isoforms. Over the past 25 years, investigators have identified ‘calpain-like’ activities in mitochondrial fractions isolated from various tissues. The studies undertaken in this dissertation were designed to positively identify the mitochondrial calpain present in renal cortical mitochondria (RCM) and to elucidate its function and proteolytic targets under both basal and CA2- -challenged conditions. We identified the RCM calpain as calpain 10 by both immunoblot …

Addiction And Substance Abuse In Nevada, An-Pyng Sun, Larry Ashley
Addiction And Substance Abuse In Nevada, An-Pyng Sun, Larry Ashley
Social Health of Nevada Reports
Substance abuse is known to cause a host of problems for individual users, their communities, and society as a whole. Its cost is staggering, as measured by lost productivity, medical illness, serious injuries, and premature death, as well as by resources required to run criminal justice system and special education programs (Meara & Frank, 2005). The substance abuse problem is global in scope. Consider these figures released by the United Nations’ 2005 World Drug Report[WDR] (United Nations, Office on Drug and Crime, 2005),
- In 2003-2004, about 200 million people, or 5% of the world’s population age 15-64, had used illicit …

Interrogating Torture And Finding Race, Ayanna Thompson
Studio for Law and Culture
Antonin Artaud’s second manifesto for the Theatre of Cruelty cries out for a theatre that will depict “great social upheavals” and “conflicts between peoples and races.” Opposed to “disinterested” theatre, Artaud designed the Theatre of Cruelty to depict and affect not only the “tortured victims,” but also the “executioner-tormentor himself.” Artaud viewed both as trapped by “a kind of higher determinism” which he sought to alter through the Theatre of Cruelty (102). To usher in this new theatrical tradition, Artaud declared that the “first spectacle of the Theatre of Cruelty will be entitled: The Conquest of Mexico” (126). Explaining …

Regulating The Business Of Insurance: Federalism In An Age Of Difficult Risk, Robert H. Jerry Ii, Steven E. Roberts
Faculty Publications
Natural disasters and terrorism events of a massive scale are "difficult risks." They are difficult (or, if large enough, impossible) to insure, and they present enormous risk-management challenges. Indeed, we are now in an era when difficult risks are the dominant feature of the risk-management landscape. These kinds of risks are inevitably multi-jurisdictional in nature, and managing them effectively requires a cohesive, comprehensive national catastrophe policy involving ex ante prevention and mitigation measures, effective risk allocation through insurance mechanisms, and ex post victim-compensation strategies. Although our nation is not yet close to establishing a much-needed and increasingly discussed national catastrophe …
The Ciego In The Novels Of Galdós: Costumbrismo, Realism, Symbolism, Vernon Chamberlin
The Ciego In The Novels Of Galdós: Costumbrismo, Realism, Symbolism, Vernon Chamberlin
Decimonónica
Like many of his contemporaries, both in Spain and other European countries, Galdós utilized many blind characters in his novels1. Although he was unaware of the fact as he created these characters, he himself would spend his final years sightless. Individual Galdosian blind characters are sometimes mentioned by critics as part of the overall discussion of specific works, but to date there has been no study showing how pervasive the ciego is throughout the vast panorama of Galdós’s works. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to demonstrate that the ciego, and the multiplicity of his …

“Beethoven” And “Sigue Beethoven”: The Sonata-Form Structure Of Galdós’S La Desheredada, Vernon A. Chamberlin
Decimonónica
It has been demonstrated that while creating the novel Tristana, as well as the first volume of Fortunata y Jacinta, Galdós did clearly follow the musical pattern known as sonata form.1 This musical design is most frequently used as the basic structure for the first or last movement of a sonata (and sometimes also for the first movement of a symphony, as in the case of Beethoven’s Third [Eroica] Symphony). In creative fiction it has served as a model for such well-known authors as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, …

Does Food Stamp Receipt Mediate The Relationship Between Food Insufficiency And Mental Health?, Colleen Heflin, James P. Ziliak
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Although the Food Stamp Program is the largest entitlement program remaining in the social safety net, comparatively little is known about the potential benefits that the program may confer on recipients. In this paper we examine an important dimension of well being, mental health, and the extent to which participation in the Food Stamp Program may attenuate the effect of food insufficiency on levels of emotional distress. Using longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample of families in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) we model emotional distress as a function of food insufficiency and other known risk factors …

Professional Psychology And The Doctrines Of Sin And Grace: Christian Leaders’ Perspectives, Mark R. Mcminn, Janeil N. Ruiz, David Marx, J. Brooke Wright, Nicole B. Gilbert
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
What is a professional psychologist to do when a client brings up the concept of sin? To some, sin may seem like a stifling religious relic that has no place in contemporary psychology. But viewing sin from within the Christian faith, and in tandem with the doctrine of grace, can help psychologists understand why sin is such an important concept for many of their Christian clients. Psychologists’ misunderstanding of sin and grace may contribute to relatively low rates of referral from Christian leaders to clinical psychologists, and may sometimes hinder therapeutic progress. Two methods of data collection, involving a total …

Excerpt: "Psychology has been defined in many ways. For much of the twentieth century psychology was defined as the *science of behaviour. Earlier, and again more recently, psychology has also emphasized internal experiences, such as sensations, perceptions, feelings or emotions, motivations and thoughts. Today, most definitions of psychology include both elements. Thus, we will define psychology as the science of behaviour and mental processes."
