Expanding Pediatric Access To Antiretroviral Therapy In South Africa, Desiree Michaels, Brian Eley, Lewis Ndhlovu, Naomi Rutenberg, Hena Khan
HIV and AIDS
In sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS has become one of the leading causes of death among children under the age of five years. Yet, despite increased availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART), children have been largely ignored or excluded from treatment initiatives. While efforts to get more children on treatment are increasing, important information is lacking to guide program and policy implementation. To address these gaps, the Horizons Program and the University of Cape Town conducted a rapid situational analysis in 2005 of pediatric HIV treatment sites in South Africa. In 2003, the South African government approved a plan for a national HIV …

The Southern Family Farm As Endangered Species: Possibilities For Survival In Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer, Suzanne W. Jones
The Southern Family Farm As Endangered Species: Possibilities For Survival In Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer, Suzanne W. Jones
English Faculty Publications
At the same time some southern studies scholars are positioning the U.S. South in a larger cultural, historic, and economic region that encompasses the Caribbean and Latin America, some southern environmentalist writers, such as long-time essayist and novelist Wendell Berry and activist-turned-memoirist Janisse Ray, are finding a pressing need to focus on smaller bioregions and the locatedness of the human subject. These writers believe that agribusiness and consumer ignorance are driving small farmers out of business and that clear-cutting timber and farming practices dependent on chemicals are threatening local ecosystems. Best-selling novelist Barbara Kingsolver has joined their ranks. With her …
Phytoremediation Of Nitrate In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Mchenry County, North Dakota, Laura C. Ackerman
Phytoremediation Of Nitrate In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Mchenry County, North Dakota, Laura C. Ackerman
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
Nitrate concentrations in the Karlsruhe aquifer (23,070 acres), located in north central McHenry County, North Dakota have been monitored by the North Dakota State Water Commission since 2001. The average nitrate-N concentration in the top ten feet of the aquifer was determined to be about 14.0 mg/L. The objective of this engineering design was to determine the location of shallow areas in the Karlsruhe aquifer where phytoremediation would be most suitable and to evaluate the effect of phytoremediation on attenuating nitrate-N concentrations. The determination of areas in the Karlsruhe aquifer where phytoremediation would be most effective was carried out through …

From Legally Blonde To Miss Congeniality: The Femininity Conundrum, Anna M. Archer
From Legally Blonde To Miss Congeniality: The Femininity Conundrum, Anna M. Archer
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that popular movies like Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality perpetuate harmful gender stereotypes by depicting women as needing to conform to traditional notions of femininity or masculinity to succeed in male-dominated professions. These portrayals contradict the protections provided by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on sex. The article contends that such films send the wrong message by suggesting women must change themselves to fit societal expectations rather than challenging those expectations.

The Captured: A True Story Of Abduction By Indians On The Texas Frontier. By Scott Zesch (Review), Thomas A. Britten
History Faculty Publications
What started out as a quiet walk through a small rural cemetery for author Scott Zesch turned into a quest to understand a long-forgotten relative. Adolph Korn, the author's great-great uncle, was just ten years old when he was captured by Apaches in 1870. His abductors took him to the Indian Territory, where they sold him to Quahada Comanches, with whom he lived for the next three years. In an effort to better understand the emotional and physical trauma his uncle must have endured, Zesch examines the stories of eight additional children captured by Indians between July 1865 and February …

Climate Change: A Catastrophe In Slow Motion, R. T. Pierrehumbert
Chicago Journal of International Law
Humans have become a major geological force with the power to commit future millennia to practically irreversible changes in global conditions. This is what Bill McKibben refers to as "The End of Nature." As an example of the impact life has on global climate, the imminent global warming caused by humans does not stand out as unique or even unusually impressive. When oxygen-generating photosynthetic algae evolved between one and two-and-one-half billion years ago, they changed the composition of one-fifth of the atmosphere, poisoned much of the previous ecosystem, and more or less terminated the dominant role of methane as a …

Dispersal Behavior Of Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Shireen Alemadi
Dispersal Behavior Of Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Shireen Alemadi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) are native to the southeastern United States but invasive elsewhere, and are dominant predators in many ecosystems that they inhabit. Information on dispersal behavior will help better understand and predict mosquitofish metapopulation dynamics and invasions. I experimentally tested dispersal behavior of individual mosquitofish under a range of laboratory conditions relevant to field situations. Preliminary experiments showed that gender, lighting conditions, hunger and acclimation time did not significantly affect net dispersal rate. Power analysis based on this preliminary experiment determined that 6 replicate fish were sufficient for each subsequent experiment; I used 24 fish, and each fish was …

Tapeworms Of Elasmobranchs (Part Ii) A Monograph On The Diphyllidea (Platyhelminthes, Cestoda), Gaines Albert Tyler Ii
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
The main objective of this monograph was a synthesis of the available knowledge on the diversity, systematics, host associations, and biogeography of the Diphyllidea. A thorough review of the literature resulted in the transfer of Diagonobothrium into Diphyllidea as a genus inquirendum. The genus Yogeshwaria was also transferred to Diphyllidea as a synonym of Echinobothrium. Its only species, E. nagabhushani n. comb., is considered to be a species inquirenda. New collections resulted in the description of a new species of Echinobothrium. Type and/or voucher specimens for 32 of 36 valid diphyllidean species (including the new species) …
Kriegsraison Or Military Necessity? The Bush Administration's Wilhelmine Attitude Towards The Conduct Of War, Scott Horton
Kriegsraison Or Military Necessity? The Bush Administration's Wilhelmine Attitude Towards The Conduct Of War, Scott Horton
Fordham International Law Journal
One phrase from a memorandum issued by President George W. Bush early in the War on Terror offers an effective summary of a radically transformed military doctrine. “As a matter of policy,” Bush wrote, “the United States Armed Forces shall continue to treat detainees humanely and, to the extent appropriate and consistent with military necessity, in a manner consistent with the principles of Geneva.” The statement offered a sense of assurance of continuity of U.S. military doctrine, which many generations viewed as being at or near the vanguard in assuring high standards for the treatment of military prisoners. This was …

The Vascular Flora And Community Structure Of Little Calumet Headwaters Nature Preserve, Laporte Country, Indiana, Julia L. Angstmann, Paul E. Rothrock, Thomas W. Post
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Little Calumet Headwaters Nature Preserve is a 108-acre tract of woodland and wetland areas that comprise the headwaters of the Little Calumet River in northwestern Indiana. The preserve, consisting of upland hardwood forests, groundwater seeps, and wetland complex, is an area of high diversity due to its topographical variation. A floristic inventory, plot sampling, and seed bank analysis were used to determine the structure and composition of the plant communities. The flora consists of 298 species (27 exotic) representing 188 genera and 84 families. Dominant vegetation of the forest includes Liriodendron tulipifera, Prunus serotina, Packera aurea and Podophyllum peltatum. …
