Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, was first diagnosed in African buffalo in South Africa’s Kruger National Park in 1990. Over the past 15 years the disease has spread northwards leaving only the most northern buffalo herds unaffected. Evidence suggests that 10 other small and large mammalian species, including large predators, are spillover hosts. Wildlife tuberculosis has also been diagnosed in several adjacent private game reserves and in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, the third largest game reserve in South Africa.

The tuberculosis epidemic has a number of implications, for which the full effect of some might only be seen in the long-term. …

Nutrient Control Of Microbial Carbon Cycling Along An Ombrotrophicminerotrophic Peatland Gradient, Jason K. Keller, Angela K. Bauers, Scott D. Bridgham, Laurie E. Kellogg, Colleen M. Iversen Jan 2006

Nutrient Control Of Microbial Carbon Cycling Along An Ombrotrophicminerotrophic Peatland Gradient, Jason K. Keller, Angela K. Bauers, Scott D. Bridgham, Laurie E. Kellogg, Colleen M. Iversen

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Future climate change and other anthropogenic activities are likely to increase nutrient availability in many peatlands, and it is important to understand how these additional nutrients will influence peatland carbon cycling. We investigated the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus on aerobic CH4 oxidation, anaerobic carbon mineralization (as CO2 and CH4 production), and anaerobic nutrient mineralization in a bog, an intermediate fen, and a rich fen in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We utilized a 5-week laboratory nutrient amendment experiment in conjunction with a 6-year field nutrient fertilization experiment to consider how the relative response to nitrogen and phosphorus differed among …

Influence Of Nutrient Availability, Stand Age, And Canopy Structure On Isoprene Flux In A Eucalyptus Saligna Experimental Forest, Jennifer L. Funk, Christian P. Giardina, Alexander Knohl, Manuel T. Lerdau Jan 2006

Influence Of Nutrient Availability, Stand Age, And Canopy Structure On Isoprene Flux In A Eucalyptus Saligna Experimental Forest, Jennifer L. Funk, Christian P. Giardina, Alexander Knohl, Manuel T. Lerdau

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Eucalyptus plantations occupy approximately 10 million ha of land in the tropics and, increasingly, afforestation and reforestation projects are relying on this genus to provide rapid occupation of degraded sites, large quantities of high-quality wood products, and high rates of carbon sequestration. Members of the genus Eucalyptus are also very high emitters of isoprene, the dominant volatile organic compound emitted by trees in tropical ecosystems, which significantly influences the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere. While fertilization growth response of these trees has been intensively studied, little is known about how fertilization and tree age alter isoprene production from plantations of …

The Role Of The Judge In The Twenty-First Century, Richard A. Posner Jan 2006

The Role Of The Judge In The Twenty-First Century, Richard A. Posner

Articles

In my youthful, scornful way, I recognized four kinds of judgments; first the cogitative, of and by reflection and logomancy; second, aleatory, of and by the dice; third, intuitive, of and by feeling or "hunching;" and fourth, asinine, of and by an ass; and in that same youthful, scornful way I regarded the last three as only variants of each other, the results of processes all alien to good judges.

Bleaching In Foraminifera With Algal Sybionts: Implications For Reed Monitoring And Risk Assessment, Pamela Hallock, D. E. Williams, E. M. Fisher, S. K. Toler Jan 2006

Bleaching In Foraminifera With Algal Sybionts: Implications For Reed Monitoring And Risk Assessment, Pamela Hallock, D. E. Williams, E. M. Fisher, S. K. Toler

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Reef-dwelling larger foraminifers share key characteristics with reefbuilding corals: they are prolific producers of calcium carbonate, they are physiologically dependent upon algal endosymbionts, and representatives of both groups have suffered bleaching episodes in recent decades. Since 1991, bleaching has been observed in populations of Amphistegina in all subtropical oceans, with peak bleaching in 1992 and secondary peaks in 1998 and 2005. Amphistegina populations exhibiting chronic, intermediate-intensity bleaching characteristically show anomalously high incidences of shell breakage, shell deformities, evidence of predation, and microbial infestation. Asexual reproduction is profoundly affected; broods from partly bleached parents typically have fewer individuals, many of which …

Venting Of Vipassana? Mindfulness Mediation's Potential For Reducing Anger's Role In Mediation, Don Ellinghausen Jr. Jan 2006

Venting Of Vipassana? Mindfulness Mediation's Potential For Reducing Anger's Role In Mediation, Don Ellinghausen Jr.

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

American culture is suffused and infatuated with anger. Politicians strive to placate the "Angry White Male," whose antagonisms also find expression in road rage, overheated talk radio, violent video games, and players-fans skirmishes at professional sporting events. American media churns out alarmingly vivid images of violence, and the ominous tendency for teenagers, in particular, to act out these lurid fantasies of "righteous wrath" dramatizes the nexus between this potentially toxic "consumption of cultural items" and anger. Vietnamese expatriate monk Thich Nhat Hanh observes that Americans "cannot speak about anger, and how to handle our anger, without paying attention to all …

New Federal Paternity Laws: Securing More Fathers For Children Of Unwed Mothers, Jeffrey A. Parness

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Public policy demands that American lawmakers, both federal and state, more vigorously promote the early, accurate, informed, and conclusive designations of fathers in law around the time children are born. There is, in particular, an urgent need today to develop legal standards that better promote more birth certificate designations of paternity for children born to unwed mothers. Public policy also demands that where paternity designations do not accurately reflect the requisite genetic ties with children, paternity laws should be more fair and just in allowing paternity disestablishment. This Article reviews the federal mandates within the Social Security Act both on …

Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian, R. Eugene Turner Jan 2006

Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The need for effective marsh restoration techniques in Louisiana is a pressing issue as the state continues to lose coastal wetlands. Returning spoil banks to canals, known as backfilling, is an attractive restoration option because it restores marsh, prevents future wetland loss, and is cost effective. The restoration of 30 canals backfilled 20 years ago was examined in this study and compared to restoration success 5 and 10 years after backfilling. Ultimately, the success of backfilling was controlled by the amount of spoil returned to the canal and the position of the canal in the marsh. Up to 95% of …

Reconstructing The Development Of Eutrophication In Louisiana Salt Marshes, M L. Parsons, Q Dortch, R. Eugene Turner, N R. Rabalais, M L. Parsons

Faculty Publications

We collected sediment cores from three salt marsh ponds in coastal Louisiana to test the usefulness of proxies of eutrophication. One-centimeter increments of Pb-210- and Cs-137-dated sediment were analyzed for diatoms, pigments (phaeophytin and chlorophyll a), biogenic silica, percentage organic matter, percentage carbon, and percentage nitrogen. Both sediment chlorophyll a and a diatom-based trophic index (TI) were significantly and positively correlated with riverine or local nutrient indices. Two diatom species, Amphora copulata Giffen and Navicula yarrensis Grunow, were significantly and negatively correlated with riverine and local nutrient indices. These results suggest that these variables can be used as potential indicators …

Paleo-Indicators And Water Quality Change In The Charlotte Harbor Estuary (Florida), R. Eugene Turner, N N. Rabalais, B Fry, N Atilla, J M. Lee, C Normandeau, T A. Oswald, E M. Swenson, D A. Tomasko

Faculty Publications

We reconstructed water quality changes for 1800 to 2000 in Charlotte Harbor (Florida), a shallow subtropical estuary, by using a suite of biological and geochemical proxies in dated sediments collected in the region of a present day, midsummer hypoxic zone. The declining freshwater loading into the estuary from 1931 to the 1980s is not the probable causal agent encouraging the appearance or expansion of a hypoxia zone (measuring up to 90 km(2) in summer). Rather, the reconstructed trends in nitrogen loading indicate increased phytoplankton production has likely caused a decline in bottom water oxygen concentrations. Sedimentary biogenic silica (BSi), carbon, …

Oxygen Depletion In The Gulf Of Mexico Adjacent To The Mississippi River, Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner Jan 2006

Oxygen Depletion In The Gulf Of Mexico Adjacent To The Mississippi River, Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The seasonal formation of a bottom water layer severely depleted in dissolved oxygen has become a perennial occurrence on the Louisiana continental shelf adjacent to the Mississippi River system. Dramatic changes have occurred in this coastal ecosystem in the last half of the 20th century as the loads of dissolved inorganic nitrogen tripled. There are increases in primary production, shifts in phytoplankton community composition, changes in trophic interactions, and worsening severity of hypoxia. The hypoxic conditions (dissolved oxygen less than 2 mg l-1) cover up to 22,000 km2 of the seabed in mid-summer. Dissolved oxygen concentrations seldom decrease to anoxia, …

Project Grow: A Plan To Grow An Edible Garden In A Poverty-Affected School To Improve Parent Involvement And Increase Student Knowledge Of Nutrition, Wendy Michelle Wickersham Jan 2006

Project Grow: A Plan To Grow An Edible Garden In A Poverty-Affected School To Improve Parent Involvement And Increase Student Knowledge Of Nutrition, Wendy Michelle Wickersham

All Graduate Projects

Growing an edible garden in a poverty-affected school serves multiple purposes. It provides a way to increase parent involvement at the school while increasing student knowledge of nutrition. This comprehensive plan prepares a school to implement a school garden run solely by teacher, students, parents, and community volunteers. The potential results are that parents will get involved at their child's school while the students can learn about nutrition along with their families.

Leaf Gas Exchange Characteristics Of Three Neotropical Mangrove Species In Response To Varying Hydroperiod, Ken W. Krauss, Robert R. Twilley, Thomas W. Doyle, Emile S. Gardiner Jan 2006

Leaf Gas Exchange Characteristics Of Three Neotropical Mangrove Species In Response To Varying Hydroperiod, Ken W. Krauss, Robert R. Twilley, Thomas W. Doyle, Emile S. Gardiner

Faculty Publications

We determined how different hydroperiods affected leaf gas exchange characteristics of greenhouse-grown seedlings (2002) and saplings (2003) of the mangrove species Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn., Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f., and Rhizophora mangle L. Hydroperiod treatments included no flooding (unflooded), intermittent flooding (intermittent), and permanent flooding (flooded). Plants in the intermittent treatment were measured under both flooded and drained states and compared separately. In the greenhouse study, plants of all species maintained different leaf areas in the contrasting hydroperiods during both years. Assimilation-light response curves indicated that the different hydroperiods had little effect on leaf gas exchange characteristics in either …
