The advent of DNA identification methods has revolutionized forensic science. It is now possible to identify criminals from trace evidence, eliminate false leads, and discover the identity of a deceased individual long after their death. As DNA plays such important roles in criminal investigatious, determining the quality of DNA due to its exposure time enviroment is imperative. This experiment seeks to help narrow down the time frame that useful nuclear DNA (nDNA) can be extracted from a decaying body. Graded Interface Models For More Accurate Determination Of Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interactions Across Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French

Attractive van der Waals–London dispersion interactions between two half crystals arise from local physical property gradients within the interface layer separating the crystals. Hamaker coefficients and London dispersion energies were quantitatively determined for Σ5 and near-∑13 grain boundaries in SrTiO3 by analysis of spatially resolved valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) data. From the experimental data, local complex dielectric functions were determined, from which optical properties can be locally analyzed. Both local electronic structures and optical properties revealed gradients within the grain boundary cores of both investigated interfaces. Introduced, invasive rats can cause substantial damage to native flora and fauna, including ground-nesting seabirds, when they become established on islands. We tested a control method for introduced Norway rats on Kiska Island, Alaska, during April-May, 2004, by hand-broadcasting rodenticide pellets (0.005% diaphacinone) over a 4-ha area at the rate of 28 kg/ha. We also gathered data on aspects of rat ecology and distribution, although rats were difficult to detect and capture. The rodenticide bait pellets seemed to have been effective in reducing the Norway rat population, however, this is based on a limited observation of rat sign and captures. …

This Article investigates the nature of the right to property guaranteed under the First Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights ('P1-1'). It argues that the European Court of Human Rights has been torn between two theories of the right to property. The first is the "integrated theory", and it holds that the right to property shares common values and purposes with other Convention rights. Hence, the interpretation of P1-1 should reflect principles developed in the interpretation of other Convention rights. It is argued that the application of the integrated theory should support a "social model" of property. The …

Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Post-Mastectomy Chest Wall Relapse, Janet Kim

The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic significance and clinical correlations of cyclooxgenase-2 expression (COX) in a cohort of patients treated with radiation (RT) for post-mastectomy chest wall relapse (PMCWR). Between 1975 and 1999, 113 patients were treated for isolated PMCWR. All patients were treated with biopsy and/or excision of the CWR followed by RT. Median follow-up was 10 years. All clinical data including demographics, pathology, staging, receptor status, HER-2/neu status, and adjuvant therapy were entered into a computerized database. To date, few high school based interventions have been shown to have lasting effects on adolescents' health behaviors. The need for health interventions targeting adolescents is underscored by data showing that several health behaviors with significant short and long term adverse effects begin in early adolescence and become progressively more prevalent toward late adolescence. This project tested the efficacy of a novel anatomy based health education curriculum at increasing health knowledge. The course was taught by first year Yale medical students. High-resolution studies of dental tissues are of considerable interest for biomedical engineering and clinical applications. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to nanoscale imaging of internal structure of human teeth by monitoring the local mechanical response to an electrical bias applied via a conductive tip. It is shown that PFM is capable of detecting dissimilar components of dental tissues, namely, proteins and calcified matrix, which have resembling morphology but different piezoelectric properties. It is demonstrated that collagen fibrils revealed in chemically treated intertubular dentin exhibit high piezoelectric activity and can be visualized in PFM …

BACKGROUND: Increased focus surrounds identifying patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who will benefit from treatment with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI). EGFR mutation, gene copy number, coexpression of ErbB proteins and ligands, and epithelial to mesenchymal transition markers all correlate with EGFR TKI sensitivity, and while prediction of sensitivity using any one of the markers does identify responders, individual markers do not encompass all potential responders due to high levels of inter-patient and inter-tumor variability. We have generated monthly resolved, stable isotope (δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C) and Sr/Ca time series from a massive Porites coral from Rabaul (4°S, 152°E): a site located in the warmest sector of the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). The coral δ¹⁸O and Sr/Ca time series are well correlated to each other and positive excursions in both records coincide with times of ENSO warm phase events. These time series contain abundant interannual variability that exhibits the well‐recognized pattern of low amplitude ENSO variation between ∼1920–1960 and high amplitude ENSO variation between 1880–1920 and 1960–1997. Background: Several aspects concerning the biology and epidemiology of leprosy remain unknown. It has been recognized that the study of children with leprosy could provide important insight into unanswered questions, particularly if disease manifestations are carefully observed. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 308 cases of children aged 0-14 y/o was conducted at the Ministry of Health Leprosy Department in Asuncion, Paraguay. Data regarding age, gender, leprosy classification, transmission, detection, clinical presentation, presence and class of reaction, and disability were abstracted. Considerable ethical debate surrounding the risks and benefits of Phase I oncology trials is based on older response and toxicity data that does not account for recent changes in the types of agents and trial design. This study aims to not only update these data, but to investigate the impact of novel trial designs on various clinical outcomes. We performed a review of the literature using the Medline database. Objective: To utilize differential gene expression of candidate markers to discriminate benign APCs (APCs) from malignant and mixed cell APCs. Background Data: Considerable controversy exists in regard to the appropriate surgical management of APCs since standard clinical and immunohistochemical methods cannot reliably determine whether an APC is indolent or aggressive. Absence epilepsy is a generalized form of epilepsy where spike-wave discharges (SWDs) involve both hemispheres of the brain and thereby alter consciousness. Recent evidence by Meeren et al (2002) in the WAG/Rij rat model of absence epilepsy points to a cortical focus of SWDs before rapid generalization of the SWDs. This focus belongs in the peri-oral area of the somatosensory cortex, and it was found to consistently lead SWDs in other cortical and subcortical areas. With this recent finding, it seems plausible that a defect lies in this focal region of the cortex, leading to SWD in the WAG/Rij model. …

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder caused by mutation of the Survival Motor Neuron (SMN1) gene. Embryonic lethality is rescued by a nearly identical copy of the gene, SMN2, which exists in variable copy number and produces a small quantity of functional SMN protein. Because disease severity inversely correlates with SMN2 gene copy number and with SMN protein level, one therapeutic strategy has been to increase SMN2 expression. Previous investigators have demonstrated that SMN promoter activity, transcript, and SMN protein are increased in cells treated with histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, suggesting a role for histone acetylation in …
