Vulnerability Of Pathogenic Biofilms To Micavibrio Aeruginosavorus, Daniel Kadouri, Nel C. Venzon, George A. O'Toole

The host specificity of the gram-negative exoparasitic predatory bacterium Micavibrio aeruginosavorus was examined. M. aeruginosavorus preyed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as previously reported, as well as Burkholderia cepacia, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and numerous clinical isolates of these species. In a static assay, a reduction in biofilm biomass was observed as early as 3 hours after exposure to M. aeruginosavorus, and an ∼100-fold reduction in biofilm cell viability was detected following a a 24-h exposure to the predator. Electrophile-Induced Ether Transfer: A New Approach To Polyketide Structural Units, Kai Liu, Richard E. Taylor, Rendy Kartika

Faculty Publications

A strategically novel approach to the formation of syn-1,3-diol mono- and diethers through electrophilic activation of homoallylic alkoxymethyl ethers has been developed. The resulting polyketide-like synthetic fragments are generated in good yield and with excellent stereocontrol. A chairlike transition state is proposed to account for the high stereoselectivity. Varying the conditions of the reaction workup results in the efficient generation of mono- and diether containing structural units common to polyketide natural products. © 2006 American Chemical Society.

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more of the cranial sutures resulting in skull deformity and possible brain dysfunction. It occurs in roughly 1 in 2,000 live births.1 It may be associated with syndromes or occur sporadically. Any cranial suture may be involved. The descriptions of the skull dysmorphologies have led to numerous hypotheses regarding the developmental trajectory of the synostosed skull, including the role of the cranial vault and cranial base. Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that can grow in yeast morphology or hyphal form depending on the surrounding environment. This ubiquitous fungus is present in skin and mucus membranes as a potential pathogen that under opportunistic conditions causes a series of systemic and superficial infections known as candidiasis, moniliasis or simply candidiasis. There has been a steady increase in the prevalence of candidiasis that is expressed in more virulent forms of infection. Although candidiasis is commonly manifested as mucocutaneous disease, life-threatening systemic invasion by this fungus can occur in every part of the body. The severity of candidal infections …

Kinesiology and Public Health

We explored the relationships among girls’ weight status, dairy servings, and total energy intake. The hypothesis that consuming dairy could reduce risk for overweight was evaluated by comparing energy intake and weight status of girls who met or consumed less than the recommended three servings of dairy per day. Participants included 172 11-year-old non-Hispanic white girls, assessed cross-sectionally. Intakes of dairy, calcium, and energy were measured using three 24-hour recalls. Body mass index and body fat measures from dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry were obtained. This thesis examines child death data in an effort to assist in prevention and intervention, as well as, to provide quantitative and qualitative analysis to improve and enhance policy development around child deaths due to abuse and neglect in Florida. The data reviewed consisted of aggregate data for all incidents of child deaths (N = 266) in Florida where the primary caregiver was the alleged perpetrator of a child fatality for children under age 18. All data examined were recorded and stored in the Department of Children and Families’ Child Safety Assessment database between 1998 and 2000.

The demand for legal equality for women in the twentieth century has been fraught with challenges and dilemmas. While advocates for equality insisted laws preventing women from full contractual rights be eliminated and that women be compensated equally for their labor, the political and social tides swept poor women responsible for their children into the mix. In addition to the dramatic influence on social policy, the demands for market equality have been met with slow movement.
