United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Telemetry was used to evaluate seasonal and diel movement patterns, general habitat use, survival, and spatial distributions of hatchery-reared juvenile pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus stocked in the Missouri River below Fort Randall Dam, South Dakota and Nebraska. Sampling occurred at about 2-week intervals during spring through fall. Of 22 ultrasonically tagged fish, 13 were intensively followed to assess hourly diel movement rates. A total of 258 relocations were made for the 22 tagged fish; 19 fish were relocated at least once, and 16 were relocated multiple times. At least 68% of tagged fish survived for 2.5 years. In 2000, fish …

Mourning Dove Population Status, 2006, David D. Dolton, Rebecca D. Rau

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

This report includes Mourning Dove Call-count Survey information gathered over the last 41 years within the conterminous United States. Between 2005 and 2006, the average number of doves heard per route did not change significantly in the Eastern Management Unit, decreased significantly in the Central Unit, and increased significantly in the Western Unit. Over the most recent 10 years, no significant trend was indicated for doves heard in either the Eastern or Western Management Units while the Central Unit showed a significant decline. Over the 41-year period, all 3 units exhibited significant declines. In contrast, for doves seen over the …

Monitoring Results For Breeding American Peregrine Falcons (Falco Peregrinus Anatum), 2003, Michael Green, Ted Swem, Marie Morin, Robert Mesta, Mary Klee, Kathy Hollar, Rob Hazlewood, Phil Delphey, Robert Currie, Michael Amaral

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) implemented the first of five nationwide monitoring efforts for American Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus anatum) (Peregrine Falcons) as described in the Service’s post-delisting monitoring plan (USFWS 2003). More than 300 observers monitored 438 Peregrine Falcon territories across six monitoring regions. Monitoring in the Southwestern monitoring region fell short of the monitoring goal, where 36 of the targeted 96 territories were monitored; efforts are underway to implement full-scale monitoring in that region in 2006. The five other monitoring regions surveyed sufficient territories to meet the statistical criteria described in the post-delisting monitoring …

Modeling Correlation And Dependence Among Intervals, Scott Ferson, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2006

Modeling Correlation And Dependence Among Intervals, Scott Ferson, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This note introduces the notion of dependence among intervals to account for observed or theoretical constraints on the relationships among uncertain inputs in mathematical calculations. We define dependence as any restriction on the possible pairings of values within respective intervals and define nondependence as the degenerate case of no restrictions (which we carefully distinguish from independence in probability theory). Traditional interval calculations assume nondependence, but alternative assumptions are possible, including several which might be practical in engineering settings that would lead to tighter enclosures on arithmetic functions of intervals. We give best possible formulas for addition of intervals under several …

On The Functional Form Of Convex Underestimators For Twice Continuously Differentiable Functions, Chirstodoulos A. Floudas, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2006

On The Functional Form Of Convex Underestimators For Twice Continuously Differentiable Functions, Chirstodoulos A. Floudas, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The optimal functional form of convex underestimators for general twice continuously differentiable functions is of major importance in deterministic global optimization. In this paper, we provide new theoretical results that address the classes of optimal functional forms for the convex underestimators. These are derived based on the properties of shift-invariance and sign-invariance.

Possession In Patent Law, Timothy R. Holbrook Jan 2006

Possession In Patent Law, Timothy R. Holbrook

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Every patent system in the world requires an inventor to disclose his invention in the patent document. The courts rationalize this obligation as part of the quid pro quo of the patent system: the patentee must disclose the invention to the public in exchange for the patent's exclusive rights. The patent thus teaches the world about this new creation and enhances the storehouse of knowledge. The quid pro quo view of the patent system, however, is inconsistent with the theoretical justifications for patent law. Patents are meant to combat free-riding, yet this view of the patent as "teaching" the invention …

The Expressive Impact Of Patents, Timothy R. Holbrook Jan 2006

The Expressive Impact Of Patents, Timothy R. Holbrook

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Patents represent a quid pro quo between the public and the inventor: in exchange for disclosing the invention, the inventor receives the right to exclude others from practicing her invention. They therefore serve as a source technical information. Patents also communicate information to markets and companies that serve to reduce various transaction costs, allowing more efficient transactions and investment. Patents consequently communicate various types of information beyond the technical.

There is no reason, however, that such messages must be limited to the technical or the pecuniary. This Article explores whether patents, like other governmental acts such as legislation, can create …

The Effects Of Divorce In A Society With Ever-Changing Family Structures, Rebecca L. Ahlstrom Jan 2006

The Effects Of Divorce In A Society With Ever-Changing Family Structures, Rebecca L. Ahlstrom

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce rates have doubled since the 1970s, this has influenced both the structure and the impact of the family. It is imperative not to overlook the large and growing population of children affected by divorce. This paper will discuss the differences of important variables involved, such as age, gender and cultural background. In addition, it will discuss in detail outreach ideas and intervention strategies including small groups, mentoring programs, and bibliotherapy that have all been effective in supporting these children and their families in this crucial change of family structure. Children in single parent and blended families are considered "at-risk" …

A Framework For Inclusive Teaching In Stem Disciplines, Lois Reddick, Wayne Jacobson, Angela Linse, Darryl Yong Jan 2006

A Framework For Inclusive Teaching In Stem Disciplines, Lois Reddick, Wayne Jacobson, Angela Linse, Darryl Yong

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A wide body of literature exists recounting the ways in which inclusive teaching practices and principles benefit students and positively impact learning, student retention, and professional development across disciplines. However, STEM faculty do not readily accept the traditional approach of examining course content from multiple perspectives as relevant to their course content or useful in their teaching. In this chapter, we propose a Framework for Inclusive Teaching in STEM Disciplines that reflects the contexts of teaching in these disciplines, and extends James Banks’ Five Dimensions of Multicultural Education to the distinct needs of STEM faculty in their classes. We also …

The Fossil Record Of Basal Monocots, Ruth A. Stockey Jan 2006

The Fossil Record Of Basal Monocots, Ruth A. Stockey

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The fossil record of basal monocots (Acorales and Alismatales) extends back to the Cretaceous in the Northern Hemisphere. While many fossils were originally assigned to these basal groups, rigorous paleobotanical studies show many of them to be misidentified. Acarus fossils have been reliably reported from the Eocene while those of Alismatales extend back to the early Cretaceous. The fossil record of basal monocots is usually represented by leaves, fruits, and seeds; however, some localities preserve stems with attached leaves and roots and even whole plants. A detailed examination of leaf venation patterns in alismatids has recently allowed the description of …

The Operculum In Pollen Of Monocotyledons, Carol A. Furness, Paula J. Rudall Jan 2006

The Operculum In Pollen Of Monocotyledons, Carol A. Furness, Paula J. Rudall

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Within monocotyledons, monosulcate pollen is the predominant type and probably represents the plesiomorphic condition, but considerable variation occurs in sulcus morphology. An operculum is an exine thickening that covers most of an aperture. Monocot opercula are usually associated with sulci, although they can occur in ulcerate apertures, as in Poaceae. There are several other aperture types closely related to the monosulcate-operculate type, and confusion occurs in the palynological literature between monosulcate-operculate, pontoperculate, disulculate, disulcate, and zona-aperturate (zonasulculate or zonasulcate) pollen. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine the distribution of the thick apertural intine and to accurately identify these …

Children Of Alcoholics : A Struggle Through Childhood And Adulthood, Christina M. Mcgreevey

Graduate Research Papers

Children of alcoholics are those directly affected by familial alcoholism. Characteristics that are common in children of alcoholics in youth and in adulthood are isolation, approval seeking, fear of angry people, and addiction (Seixas & Youcha, 1985). Treatment for children of alcoholics is available through several forms of therapy including self-help groups and family therapy. The purpose of this paper is to address common characteristics of children of alcoholics, codependency, as well as treatment procedures for this population.

Understanding The Mind-Body Connection For Optimal Health And Healing, Molly M. Cretsinger

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the research paper is to understand how a person's attitudes and beliefs shape their life and influence their health and healing. It is fundamental for someone in the helping profession to gain insight into the role of love, faith, hope, and forgiveness in overall health and healing. The key to health and healing is to understand, accept, and believe in the notion of control over one's thinking and the ability to be who one chooses to be. Every day and every thought is a choice. It is crucial for health and overall wellness that individuals take responsibility …

Charles Dickens’ Hard Times And The Academic Health Center: A Tale Of The Urban Working Poor And The Violation Of A Covert Covenant, An American Perspective, Thomas J. Papadimos M.D., M.P.H. Jan 2006

Charles Dickens’ Hard Times And The Academic Health Center: A Tale Of The Urban Working Poor And The Violation Of A Covert Covenant, An American Perspective, Thomas J. Papadimos M.D., M.P.H.

Journal of Health Ethics

Charles Dickens’ novel “Hard Times” focuses on the struggles of urban workers in 19th century England. The situations of workers in 21st century America are not dissimilar thus making Dickens’ commentary and characters applicable to the contemporary socioeconomic scene. The number of uninsured or underinsured poor in America is rising. AHCs must go beyond their traditional mission of patient care, education and research and embrace the local neighborhoods they serve. The urban location, technical expertise, and educational mission of many AHCs make them ideally suited to assist urban populations that are at great health risk. Many Academic Health Centers (AHCs) …

Art Criticism

v. : ill. ; 22 cm (original analog pub.),If Art Criticism meets some of its editors’ hopes for it, we shall be able to claim the appearance of some art criticism, with subjects arising from the writers’ or editors’ decisions, rather than the art market’s. Articles on individual critics and on current groups and tendencies will lead towards the adequate history of art criticism so badly needed in relation to art and in relation to the literature of other disciplines.
