Design And Implementation Strategies For Peer-Led Team Learning In Organic Chemistry, Stephen K. Manu Jan 2006

Design And Implementation Strategies For Peer-Led Team Learning In Organic Chemistry, Stephen K. Manu

Capstone Research Projects

Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL), which initially began as an effort to improve undergraduate chemistry education, has shown the potential to improve learning among college students in all disciplines. The model applies the desired qualities of teamwork to learning. This project is aimed at designing and setting up a PLTL Workshop at Southern Adventist University (SAU). Nine students currently taking organic chemistry at SAU volunteered to participate in the project. In order to determine the effectiveness of the project, test scores were collected and analyzed for any apparent trends, and an end-of-semester survey was conducted. The results indicate that the program …

Purified Water: A Closer Look At Bottled Waters And Their Claims, Henry Piñango

Capstone Research Projects

The claims made by three bottled water manufacturers were checked through a series of tests. CHA ™ (by Abundant Life CHA ™ Water Company in Chattanooga, TN), Penta ® (by Bio-hydration Research Lab, Inc.), and Mountain Fresh superoxygenated water (Collegedale, TN) were the subject of this study. Three tests were done on these samples: pH level, dissolved oxygen, and osmosis rate test. The pH level test confirmed the claim that CHA ™ water is alkaline (pH = 9.6); the other samples tested had pH levels ranging from 6.5 to 7.6. The dissolved oxygen test compared the oxygen concentration of several …

Highland Lake Fish Passage Restoration (Fact Sheet), Elaine Tremble, Department Of Marine Resources, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, Maine Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, Gulf Of Maine Coastal Program, Natural Resources Conservation Service, City Of Westbrook, Highland Lake Association

Publications

Renovating the fishway and restoring the degraded stream channel at Highland Lake Dam will improve upstream and downstream passage for diadromous (sea-run) fish – especially alewives. Historically, alewives had enjoyed free access to Highland Lake’s spawning and nursery habitat, so this project will help restore the alewife population, enhance biological vitality, improve recreational opportunities and expand economic prospects in the Presumpscot River Watershed, Casco Bay and the Gulf of Maine. This restoration project represents one more important piece in the ongoing efforts of state and federal natural resource agencies, towns, non-government organizations and individual citizens to bring the Presumpscot River …

Assessing Past Strategies For Countering Terrorism, In Lebanon And By Libya, Louis Kriesberg Jan 2006

Assessing Past Strategies For Countering Terrorism, In Lebanon And By Libya, Louis Kriesberg

Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration

American strategies to deal with terrorist attacks against Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s and by Libya since the beginning of the 1980s are examined. The consequences of the various strategies employed by U.S. government officials over time and the strategies employed by American non-governmental actors and by international organizations are compared. In addition, alternative strategies that might plausibly have been employed are also discussed. Official actions that relied largely on military methods and were conducted unilaterally tended to be less effective, even counterproductive, compared to actions that were multilateral and relied significantly on diplomatic approaches, often aided by intermediaries.

Organic Anion And Cation Transporter Expression And Function During Embryonic Kidney Development And In Organ Culture Model Systems, Douglas H. Sweet, Satish A. Eraly, Kevin T. Bush, Sanjay K. Nigam

Pharmaceutics Publications

Background

Organic anion and cation transporters (OATs, OCTs and OCTNs) mediate the proximal tubular secretion of numerous clinically important compounds, including various commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals. Here, we examine the ontogeny of these transporters in rat embryonic kidney in detail, both in vivo and in two in vitro organ culture models of kidney development, whole embryonic kidney (WEK) culture and culture of induced metanephric mesenchyme (MM).

Methods

We used QPCR to determine expression levels of transporter genes in rat embryonic kidneys on each day of gestation from ed13 to ed18, in induced and un-induced MM, and on each day of one …

County-Level Surveillance Of White-Tailed Deer Infestation By Ixodes Scapularis And Dermacentor Albipictus (Acari: Ixodidae) Along The Illinois River, M. Roberto Cortinas, Uriel Kitron

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

From 1998 to 2003, 4,935 hunter-killed deer in northern and central Illinois were examined for ticks; 4,066 blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, and 6,530 winter ticks, Dermacentor albipictus (Packard) (Acari: Ixodidae), were collected. I. scapularis was the predominant tick species in the northern portion of the study area, with a decreasing north-to-south prevalence gradient. In contrast, D. albipictus was more common in the south with a decreasing south-to-north prevalence gradient. Compared with previous studies, the geographic range for both species expanded into the central portion of the Illinois River. Prevalence and intensity of both tick species were greater on bucks, …

Relative Abundance Of Exotic And Native Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) In Southeast Nebraska Alfalfa, James C. Kriz, Stephen D. Danielson, James R. Brandle, Erin E. Blankenship

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The seven-spotted lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L., and the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, are exotic Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) that are regularly encountered in southeastern Nebraska. Harmonia axyridis, a native of eastern Asia, was first reported in an established population near Abita Springs, St. Tammay Parish, Louisiana, in 1988. It was hypothesized that the introduction was accidental through commerce in Louisiana and not from introduction for biological control. Coccinella septempunctata, a native of Eurasia, was introduced for biological control several times and at a variety of locations across North America during the last century. As is the case …

During the present study, the size of the population was determined, the habitat structure in and around the individual colonies analyzed, and management recommendation made to potentially increase the size of the population. During the summer of 2005, the I remota population consisted of 1,074 stems in 12 colonies, located along the northwest side of the island. In late June, flowering appeared to be prolific, where means and standard deviations of floral buds and open flowers were 1.6 :t …

Comparative Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of Oncidiinae (Maxillarieae, Orchidaceae), William Louis Stern, Barbara S. Carlsward Jan 2006

Comparative Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of Oncidiinae (Maxillarieae, Orchidaceae), William Louis Stern, Barbara S. Carlsward

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Subtribe Oncidiinae comprises a vegetatively heterogeneous assemblage of species that has persistently been incapable of organization. Anatomy was considered to be a possible means to resolve the perplexity of relationships amongst the constituent taxa. The consistent occurrence of a foliar hypodermis, homogeneous mesophyll, conical silica bodies in stegmata, and ubiquitous fibre bundles in leaves provides a matrix for linking the taxa, as do the parenchymatous pith and O-thickened endodermal cell walls in roots. However, the strict consensus of the 40 genera studied was completely unresolved, suggesting that vegetative characters alone are insufficient to assess the relationships amongst these taxa, a …

Our society is galvanized in that the sexual exploitation of children is an egregious crime. Yet, there is a vast store of child pornography materials readily available; materials that are the recordation of the child's actual sexual abuse. This document explores the history of child pornography, its current state and the environment in which it flourishes, the Internet. this research examines the scope of the problem and those that are associated with child pornography. This body of work is intended to provide greater understanding of the scope of the problem and provide clear and actionable public policy recommendations.

Identifying Factors That Influence Gender Disparities In Physician Income: Implications For Public Policy, Wendy Bolyard Jan 2006

Identifying Factors That Influence Gender Disparities In Physician Income: Implications For Public Policy, Wendy Bolyard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that female physicians continue to earn less than their male counterparts. From both social justice and feminist perspectives, laws requiring equal pay should provide just income for females as compared to males. However, the literature continues to indicate that in general females earn less than males, a trend that is also true for physicians. Theoretically informed postulates are measured here with structural equation modeling to test the influence of the unique latent construct "specialization" on the income gap while controlling for demographic and contextual variables. The analysis tests the assumption that the influence of specialization is the …

Phospholipase A2mechanism Of Interfacial Activation,An Interdiscliplinary Approach, Kathleen N. Nemec Jan 2006

Phospholipase A2mechanism Of Interfacial Activation,An Interdiscliplinary Approach, Kathleen N. Nemec

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes the sn-2-ester bond of membrane phospholipids and liberates arachidonic acid, which is converted to eicosanoids that act as potent mediators of inflammation and allergy. As such this enzyme plays a crucial role in many homeostatic physiological and immunologic processes and disease progression. PLA2s undergo substantial increase in activity upon binding to cellular membranes. This effect of interfacial activation is well recognized, yet its structural and physical aspects are poorly understood. In this work, we have employed the interdisciplinary methods of molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics and computational biology, in order to elucidate …

Same-Sex Marriage : Right Or Wrong? Past, Present, And Future, Jessica Hannibal, Summer Snell Jan 2006

Same-Sex Marriage : Right Or Wrong? Past, Present, And Future, Jessica Hannibal, Summer Snell

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

An exploration of different perspectives on homosexuality throughout history, starting from ancient Greek and Palestinian beliefs, continuing to modern day society. Causes of current beliefs on same-sex marriage are traced to homophobia and heterosexism and several court cases and laws are documented. The last segment of the paper suggests that current arguments regarding same-sex marriage negatively affect society by portraying homosexuals as different, and therefore unequal.

Fundamentalism: The Extreme Reaction To German Higher Criticism, John M. Muir Jan 2006

Fundamentalism: The Extreme Reaction To German Higher Criticism, John M. Muir

Seminary Masters Theses

Preface

Beginning in the last half of the nineteenth century in America the Christian Church became radically divided over the issue of German Higher Criticism and the theory of evolution. Those who accepted German Higher Criticism and evolutionary theory called themselves Progressives, or Liberals, while those who rejected German Higher Criticism and evolutionary theory called themselves Fundamentalists. While those on the left usually see both names, Progressives and Liberals, as pejorative today, those in the Fundamentalist camp still hold proudly to the name and hold to the same basic beliefs. My thesis is that the Fundamentalist's rejection of German Higher …

Building Interoperable Vocabulary And Structures For Learning Objects, Jian Qin, Naybell Hernández

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The structural, functional, and production views on learning objects influence metadata structure and vocabulary. We drew on these views and conducted a literature review and in-depth analysis of 14 learning objects and over 500 components in these learning objects to model the knowledge framework for a learning object ontology. The learning object ontology reported in this paper consists of 8 top-level classes, 28 classes at the second level, and 34 at the third level. Except class Learning object, all other classes have the three properties of preferred term, related term, and synonym. To validate the ontology, we conducted a query …
