N.F.S. Grundtvig's Approach To Christian Community And Civic Responsibility, Mark C. Mattes Jan 2006

N.F.S. Grundtvig's Approach To Christian Community And Civic Responsibility, Mark C. Mattes

The Bridge

A perennial concern of Christian social ethics is the attempt to discern the best paradigm for relating the Christian faith and life to wider culture. H. Richard Niebuhr's typology1 of how Christ relates to culture, i. e., "Christ against culture" (sectarian), "Christ above culture" (Roman Catholic), "Christ transforming culture" (Reformed), "Christ of culture" (liberal Protestant), and "Christ and culture in paradox" (Lutheran) continues to provide a helpful framework in which to understand the role of the Christian ethos in public life. One important interpretation of this latter type, "Christ and culture in paradox" is that of the nineteenth century Danish …

The Distribution Of Mortality In U.S. Counties, L. Dwight Israelsen, Ryan D. Israelsen, William J. Israelsen Jan 2006

The Distribution Of Mortality In U.S. Counties, L. Dwight Israelsen, Ryan D. Israelsen, William J. Israelsen

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Previous studies on life expectancy by U.S. county have found large differences among counties in life expectancy at birth for both males and females. Various determinants of these differences have been identified, including economic, education, demographic, social, geographic, climatic, and environmental factors. This study uses mortality data to identify the distribution of mortality (age at death) and mortality Gini coefficients byU.S. county for males and females for each year between 1985 and 1994. The study also takes a preliminary look at differences in county mortality Gini coefficients among states, regions, and over time. The counties with the smallest degree of …

A Guide For Implementation Of The Montessori Theory Of Education In The Lower Elementary Program, Sheila G. Wolfe Jan 2006

A Guide For Implementation Of The Montessori Theory Of Education In The Lower Elementary Program, Sheila G. Wolfe

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In this project, the author categorized the Montessori curriculum into grade levels so that parents will know what the expectations will be for the average student by the end of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade. The Montessori materials are divided into subjects across the curriculum. The scope and sequence was developed by a research of various Montessori schools and training centers. These schools were classified as private, public, or charter; some had an affiliation with AMI or AMS. The information received was checked and cross-referenced, comparing the information from one school with another. Next, a model was established which became …

Turnover At Lockheed Martin: A Study In How To Retain Team Members, Dianna L. Julian Jan 2006

Turnover At Lockheed Martin: A Study In How To Retain Team Members, Dianna L. Julian

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Frequent turnover causes the Lockheed Martin Test and Readiness Group to re-train a third of its work force every year. To better understand why employees leave, I plan to conduct an action research project to gather data on employee job satisfaction, a widely-held indicator of turnover intent. Data gathering methods will include questionnaires, interviews, and secondary data. A collaborative team will analyze the data and recommend an appropriate change intervention to ameliorate the turnover issue. By gaining a full understanding of the causes for employee turnover, the group can learn how to retain its talent to improve effectiveness and enhance …

Metabolic Routing Of Dietary Nutrients In Birds: Effects Of Diet Quality And Macronutrient Composition Revealed Using Stable Isotopes, David W. Podlesak, Scott R. Mcwilliams Jan 2006

Metabolic Routing Of Dietary Nutrients In Birds: Effects Of Diet Quality And Macronutrient Composition Revealed Using Stable Isotopes, David W. Podlesak, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

During fall migration many songbirds switch from consuming primarily insects to consuming mostly fruit. Fruits with more carbohydrates and less protein may be sufficient to rebuild expended fat stores, but such fruits may be inadequate to replace catabolized protein. We manipulated the concentrations and isotopic signatures of macronutrients in diets fed to birds to study the effects of diet quality on metabolic routing of dietary nutrients. We estimated that approximately 45% and 75%, respectively, of the carbon in proteinaceous tissue of birds switched to high‐ or low‐protein diets came from nonprotein dietary sources. In contrast, we estimated that approximately 100% …

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And The Benefits Of Guided Mental Imagery In Treatment, Lisa A. Langstraat Jan 2006

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And The Benefits Of Guided Mental Imagery In Treatment, Lisa A. Langstraat

Graduate Research Papers

Seventy percent of adults in the United States will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Out of these individuals, 25% will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This disorder is characterized by distinct physiological changes as well as notable psychological symptoms. If left untreated or improperly treated, PTSD exacts significant costs in individual suffering, quality of life, interpersonal relationships, productivity, and increased use of medical and psychiatric services.

The purpose of this paper is to present comprehensive information about PTSD and its impact on those who suffer from the disorder. This paper will also provide a brief synopsis …

The Clapper Rail As An Indicator Species Of Estuarine Marsh Health, James N. Novak, Karen F. Gaines, James C. Cumbee Jr., Gary L. Mills, Alejandro Rodriguez-Navarro, Christopher S. Romanek Jan 2006

The Clapper Rail As An Indicator Species Of Estuarine Marsh Health, James N. Novak, Karen F. Gaines, James C. Cumbee Jr., Gary L. Mills, Alejandro Rodriguez-Navarro, Christopher S. Romanek

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Clapper Rails (Rallus longirostris) can potentially serve as an indicator species of estuarinemarsh health because of their strong site fi delity and predictable diet consisting predominantly of benthic organisms. These feeding habits increase the likelihood of individuals accumulating signifi - cant amounts of contaminants associated with coastal sediments. Moreover, since Clapper Rails are threatened in most of their western range, additional study of the effects of potential toxins on these birds is essential to conservation programs for this species. Here we present techniques (DNA strand breakage, eggshell structure, and human-consumption risk) that can be used to quantify detrimental effects to …

Element Levels In Snakes In South Carolina: Differences Between A Control Site And Exposed Site On The Savannah River Site, J. Burger, S. Murray, K. F. Gaines, James M. Novak, T. Punshon, C. Dixon, M. Gochfeld Jan 2006

Element Levels In Snakes In South Carolina: Differences Between A Control Site And Exposed Site On The Savannah River Site, J. Burger, S. Murray, K. F. Gaines, James M. Novak, T. Punshon, C. Dixon, M. Gochfeld

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Levels of 18 elements, including lead, mercury, selenium, and uranium, were examined in three species of snakes from an exposed and reference site on the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina. We tested the hypotheses that there were no differences as a function of species, and there were no difference between the exposed and control site for blood and muscle (tail) samples for banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata), brown water snake (N. taxispilota) and cottonmouth (Akistrodon piscivorous). The banded water snakes collected were significantly smaller than the other two species. For blood, there were significant species differences …

Comparative Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of The Angraecoids (Vandeae, Orchidaceae) With An Emphasis On The Leafless Habit, Barbara S. Carlsward, William Louis Stern, Benny Bytebier Jan 2006

Comparative Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of The Angraecoids (Vandeae, Orchidaceae) With An Emphasis On The Leafless Habit, Barbara S. Carlsward, William Louis Stern, Benny Bytebier

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The vegetative anatomy and morphology of 142 species of the angraecoid orchids (Angraecinae + Aerangidinae) and 18 species of Aeridinae were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. Leafless members of Vandeae were of particular interest because of their unique growth habit. Leafy and leafless members of Angraecinae and Aerangidinae were examined and compared with specimens of Aeridinae. Vandeae were homogeneous in both leaf and root anatomy. A foliar hypodermis and fibre bundles were generally absent. Stegmata with spherical silica bodies were found associated with sclerenchyma and restricted to leaves in almost all specimens examined. Distinct inner tangential wall thickenings …

Antiinflammatory And Immunosuppressive Activity Of Sialostatin L, A Salivary Cystatin From The Tick Ixodes Scapularis, Michalis Kotsyfakis, Anderson Sá-Nunes, Ivo M. B. Francischetti, Thomas N. Mather, John F. Anderson, José M. Ribeiro Jan 2006

Antiinflammatory And Immunosuppressive Activity Of Sialostatin L, A Salivary Cystatin From The Tick Ixodes Scapularis, Michalis Kotsyfakis, Anderson Sá-Nunes, Ivo M. B. Francischetti, Thomas N. Mather, John F. Anderson, José M. Ribeiro

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Here we report the ability of the tick Ixodes scapularis, the main vector of Lyme disease in the United States, to actively and specifically affect the host proteolytic activity in the sites of infestation through the release of a cystatin constituent of its saliva. The cystatin presence in the saliva was verified both biochemically and immunologically. We named the protein sialostatin L because of its inhibitory action against cathepsin L. We also show that the proteases it targets, although limited in number, have a prominent role in the proteolytic cascades that take place in the extracellular and intracellular environment. …

Trapping Phyllophaga Spp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) In The United States And Canada Using Sex Attractants, Paul S. Robbins, Steven R. Alm, Et Al Jan 2006

Trapping Phyllophaga Spp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) In The United States And Canada Using Sex Attractants, Paul S. Robbins, Steven R. Alm, Et Al

Plant Sciences and Entomology Faculty Publications

The sex pheromone of the scarab beetle, Phyllophaga anxia, is a blend of the methyl esters of two amino acids, L-valine and L-isoleucine. A field trapping study was conducted, deploying different blends of the two compounds at 59 locations in the United States and Canada. More than 57,000 males of 61 Phyllophaga species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) were captured and identified. Three major findings included: (1) widespread use of the two compounds [of the 147 Phyllophaga (sensu stricto) species found in the United States and Canada, males of nearly 40% were captured]; (2) in most species intraspecific male …
