Comparison Of Fish Assemblages And Water Quality In Two Marinas In The British Virgin Islands, Brian Gratwicke, Martin R. Speight
Comparison Of Fish Assemblages And Water Quality In Two Marinas In The British Virgin Islands, Brian Gratwicke, Martin R. Speight
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Eutrophication is a widespread problem in tropical marine environments that leads to the increase of nutrients in a water body, usually nitrate and phosphate, and is usually associated with the discharge of untreated sewage, intensive farming or fertilizer-enriched agricultural runoff (Wu 1999). Common symptoms are increased N and P levels, increased macroalgal production in shallow areas, reduced dissolved oxygen, loss of seagrass and coral habitats and changes in the fish community (Hallock and Schlager 1986, Granelli et al. 1990, Valiela 1995, Hemminga and Duarte 2000). Direct chemical testing to establish pollution levels can be difficult because of sharp pollution gradients, …

Body Size Of The Endosymbiotic Pea Crab Tumidotheres Maculatus: Larger Hosts Hold Larger Crabs, Karen Kane, Gregory S. Farley
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The endosymbiotic pea crab, Tumidotheres maculatus, uses a broad range of host taxa, including several bivalve species, in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Because shelter size affects the size of other, free-living crab species, we hypothesized that pea crabs living in larger bivalve hosts should attain larger sizes. Crabs and hosts collected from 3 field sites in northern Florida show this trend. We examined crabs living in a large host, the pen shell Atrina rigida, and found them to be larger than pea crabs living in a small host, the bay scallop Argopecten irradians. Moreover, this trend …
Marionia Tedi Ev. Marcus, 1983 (Nudibranchia, Tritoniidae) In The Gulf Of Mexico: First Record Of An Opisthobranch Mollusk From Hydrocarbon Cold Seeps, Angel Valdes
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Cold seeps in the Gulf of Mexico contain relatively diverse molluscan assemblages primarily composed of species that support chemoautotrophic symbionts, such as vesicomyid and mytilid bivalves, but also numerous species of shelled gastropods, bivalves, monoplacophorans, and polyplacophorans (Cordes 2004).
Recent exploration of hydrocarbon seep sites in the Mississippi Canyon and the Vioska Knoll revealed the presence of an unidentified species of nudibranch. The present paper describes the single specimen collected, which constitutes the first published record of an opisthobranch mollusk from a cold seep. The material examined is deposited at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH).

New Records For Cubanocuma Gutzui Băcescu And Muradian, 1977 (Crustacea: Cumacea: Nannastacidae) From The Western Atlantic, Richard W. Heard, Joel W. Martin, Thomas J. Hansknecht, Donald B. Cadien
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Because the original description and many subsequent records for Cubanocuma gutzui have appeared in a Romanian journal, Travaux du Muséum d’Histoire naturelle “Grigore Antipa,” which has limited distribution in the west, many workers studying tropical western Atlantic crustaceans still remain unaware of both the genus and species. Also, the species may have gone unrecognized (recorded as an odd specimen of Campylaspis, for instance) or may have been overlooked because of its small size. As part of an ongoing survey of the marine invertebrates of Guana Island, British Virgin Islands (BVI) (led by T.L. Zimmerman and J.W. Martin), numerous specimens …

Promoting Low Impact Development In Your Community, New England Environmental Finance Center
Planning
Low Impact Development (LID) is an approach to stormwater management and site development that is gaining popularity throughout the country. Its attractiveness lies in its potential to lessen off-site stormwater impacts, reduce costs to municipalities and developers, and promote development that is “softer on the land” compared with typical traditional development. The approach, which is applicable to residential, commercial and industrial projects, and in urban, suburban and rural settings, often is linked with efforts by governments and citizens to foster more sustainable communities.

Testing The Peninsula Effect: Does It Affect Freshwater Crustaceans Inhabiting Ephemeral Wetlands On Florida's Ridges?, Debra Rinne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The peninsula effect is a pattern of diversity wherein species richness decreases along a peninsula from base to tip and is attributed to three mechanisms: historical processes, habitat gradients, and immigration-extinction equilibrium. Numerous studies have reported conflicting results involving the existence, cause, and validity of the peninsula effect in part because they did not account for effects of history or habitat on species richness patterns and because most previous research focused on organisms that actively disperse, which could confound results with behavioral habitat selection. Florida poses an excellent opportunity to study the peninsula effect because of its geological history and …
Exploring The Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence And Hiv Risk Propensity In African American Women, Lauren Lois Josephs
Exploring The Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence And Hiv Risk Propensity In African American Women, Lauren Lois Josephs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the relationship between Intimate Partner Violence and HIV Risk-Propensity in African-American women. Current literature on HIV reveals that one of the groups most seriously impacted by the continued scourge of HIV is African-American heterosexual women. An anonymous questionnaire was completed by a community based sample of 200 African American women with a varied history of intimate partner violence to (1) explore whether a relationship exists between Intimate Partner Violence and sexual coercion in African-American women (2) determine whether a relationship exists between sexual coercion and HIV Risk in African-American women (3) determine if the frequency of intimate …
Bioinformatic Analysis Of Solanaceae Chloroplast Genomes And Characterization Of An Arabidopsis Protein Disulfide Isomerase In Transgenic Tobacco Chloroplasts, Justin James Grevich
Bioinformatic Analysis Of Solanaceae Chloroplast Genomes And Characterization Of An Arabidopsis Protein Disulfide Isomerase In Transgenic Tobacco Chloroplasts, Justin James Grevich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Throughout history, traditional plant breeding has been used to provide resistance to pests, disease and other forms of environmental stress, as well as to increase yield and improve upon quality and processing attributes. Over the last decade, the advancement in sequencing technology and bioinformatic analysis has unleashed a wealth of knowledge about chloroplast genetic organization and evolution. The lack of complete plastid genome sequences is one of the major limitations in advancing plastid genetic engineering to other useful crops. This is due to the fact that plastid genome sequences are essential for the identification of endogenous regulatory sequences and optimal …
Studies On The Novel Function Of Amyloid Precursor Protein In Glial Differentiation Of Neural Stem Cells, Young-Don Kwak
Studies On The Novel Function Of Amyloid Precursor Protein In Glial Differentiation Of Neural Stem Cells, Young-Don Kwak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although amyloid β (Aβ) deposition has been a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the physiological function of amyloid precursor protein (APP) is not clear. Our results suggested that high concentration of APP induces glial differentiation while physiological level of APP promotes migration and differentiation of neural stem cell (HNSC). HNSCs were mainly differentiated into astrocytes when they are transplanted into APP transgenic mouse brain or treated with a high concentration of secreted-type APP (sAPP) in culture. Staurosporine (STS) induced a distinctive astrocytic morphology in NT-2/D1 neural progenitor cells with expressions of APP and astrocyte-specific markers, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), …
Effects Of Patch Size And Matrix Type On Bird Assemblages Within Central Florida Cypress Domes, Julia Noran
Effects Of Patch Size And Matrix Type On Bird Assemblages Within Central Florida Cypress Domes, Julia Noran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The numerous studies on the effects of patch size on bird assemblages have produced varied results. I studied the effects of patch size and surrounding matrix on bird assemblages within central Florida cypress domes. My null hypothesis was that bird assemblages within cypress domes are unaffected by dome size or development in the matrix around the dome. My alternative hypothesis was that differences in bird assemblages are correlated with size and the degree of development within the matrix. I classified a pool of over a thousand domes according to three size categories and four matrix types. Three representatives for each …

Cooperation Of The Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And Cytochrome P450 1a1 In Mediating Lung Inflammation And Mutagenicity Induced By Diesel Exhaust Particles, Hongwen Zhao, Mark W. Barger, Joseph K H Ma, Vincent Castranova, Jane Y C Ma
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) have been shown to activate oxidant generation by alveolar macrophages (AMs), alter xenobiotic metabolic pathways, and modify the balance of pro-antiinflammatory cytokines. In this study we investigated the role of nitric oxide (NO) in DEP-mediated and DEP organic extract (DEPE)-mediated inflammatory responses and evaluated the interaction of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were intratracheally (IT) instilled with saline, DEPs (35 mg/kg), or DEPEs (equivalent to 35 mg DEP/kg), with or without further treatment with an iNOS inhibitor, aminoguanidine (AG; 100 mg/kg), by intraperitoneal injection 30 min before and 3, …

Analysis Of Response Calls To Diverse Ground Predators From Three Geographically Separate Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Subpopulations, Sarah A. (Bales) Douglass
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
Dialectic variation occurs in many bird species. Different factors have been investigated regarding dialectic variation, including cultural and genetic transmission of songs or calls, and geographic separation. In this study, the predator alarm call of the Florida Scrub-Jay to ground predators was recorded in three geographically separate subpopulations across Florida—Canaveral National Seashore/Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Lyonia Preserve and Leisure Lakes/Lake June in Winter Scrub State Park—to examine any dialectic occurrence between these three subpopulations. Additionally, many bird species are recognized as having highly evolved predator recognition systems, often with different calls for specific predators. The Florida Scrub Jay has …

The Casco Bay Estuary Partnership (CBEP, formerly the Casco Bay Estuary Project) is a collaborative effort to preserve and protect the bay’s resources. The partners include local, state, and federal agencies and interested citizen groups. In 1990, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency designated Casco Bay as “an estuary of national significance,” leading to the formation of the CBEP. For the past 15 years, CBEP has received significant annual federal funding to develop and implement a plan for the bay’s future.
