Asymmetric Parenthood, Katharine K. Baker
Asymmetric Parenthood, Katharine K. Baker
All Faculty Scholarship
This analysis of the American Law Institute's Principles of Family Law, Chapter 3, examines how the Principles perceive the origins and extent of parental obligation. What is that makes someone financially responsible for a child? Perhaps surprisingly, the Drafters of this key chapter of the Principles spend remarkably little time analyzing that question. Instead, to determine who has parental obligation, the Principles rely on extant legal paternity and parenthood doctrine that is itself completely muddled. To determine the extent of parental obligation, the Principles employ a binary biological ideal of parenthood that fails to reflect reality for close to half …

Abstract
Pancreatic islets of Langerhans display complex intracellular calcium changes in response to glucose that include fast (seconds), slow (∼5 min), and mixed fast/slow oscillations; the slow and mixed oscillations are likely responsible for the pulses of plasma insulin observed in vivo. To better understand the mechanisms underlying these diverse patterns, we systematically analyzed the effects of glucose on period, amplitude, and plateau fraction (the fraction of time spent in the active phase) of the various regimes of calcium oscillations. We found that in both fast and slow islets, increasing glucose had limited effects on amplitude and period, but increased …

A Risk Factor Model For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury, Gerwyn Hughes, J. Watkins
A Risk Factor Model For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury, Gerwyn Hughes, J. Watkins
Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)
The stability of the tibiofemoral joint is maintained by passive (non-contractile) and dynamic (contractile) mechanisms. The passive mechanisms include the shape of the articular surfaces, the menisci, the ligaments and the joint capsule. The dynamic mechanisms consist of the muscle-tendon units that cross the joint, in particular, the quadriceps and hamstrings. The incidence of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is reported to be 6 to 8 times greater in females than males competing in the same activities. A number of intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors have been proposed to account for this gender difference in the incidence of ACL …

Cooperation Targets: From Industry To Energy Services, Stephanie Ohshita, A Meier, S Wiel, G Heggelund
Environmental Science
Our research has identified three key trends in existing energy efficiency cooperation. The first, discussed in Chapter 3, is the growing role of independent, international cooperation networks in facilitating large-scale energy efficiency improvements. The second, explored in Chapter 4, is the increasing importance of policy development cooperation as an effective mechanism for promoting significant energy savings and greenhouse gas reductions. In Chapter 5, we examine cooperation activity sector by sector and note increasing activity in certain economic sectors with numerous, diverse actors, most notably in appliances, transportation and buildings. In the industrial sector, there is a trend from “hard” technology …

Prevalence And Serovars Of Salmonella In The Feces Of Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Nebraska, David G. Renter, David P. Gnad, Jan M. Sargeant, Scott E. Hygnstrom
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
To determine the prevalence and serovars of Salmonella in free-ranging deer, we cultured feces from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) harvested by hunters during a regular firearm season in southeastern Nebraska (USA). We recovered Salmonella from 5 (1%; 95% confidence interval: 0.37– 2.20%) of 500 samples and identified four different Salmonella enterica serovars [Litchfield (1), Dessau (1), Infantis (2), and Enteritidis (1)]. Although the prevalence of Salmonella in free-ranging deer appears to be low, the serovars recovered are known to be pathogenic to humans and animals.

Three-Band Model For Noninvasive Estimation Of Chlorophyll Carotenoids And Anthocyanin Contents In Higher Plant Leaves, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Galina P. Keydan, Mark N. Merzlyak

Leaf pigment content and composition provide important information about plant physiological status. Reflectance measurements offer a rapid, nondestructive technique to estimate pigment content. This paper describes a recently developed three-band conceptual model capable of remotely estimating total of chlorophylls, carotenoids and anthocyanins contents in leaves from many tree and crop species. We tuned the spectral regions used in the model in accord with pigment of interest and the optical characteristics of the leaves studied, and showed that the developed technique allowed accurate estimation of total chlorophylls, carotenoids and anthocyanins, explaining more than 91%, 70% and 93% of pigment variation, respectively. …

Populations of Pinus ponderosa and Juniperus virginiana are expanding into semiarid Sandhills grasslands in Nebraska. To evaluate the physiological basis of their success, we measured the seasonal course of leaf gas exchange, plant water status, and carbon isotope discrimination in these two native trees and two native C4 grasses (Schizachyrium scoparium and Panicum virgatum). Compared to the trees, grasses had higher net photosynthetic rates (Anet) and water use efficiency (WUE) and more negative predawn and midday water potentials (Ψ) in June and July. While leaf Ψ and rates of leaf gas exchange declined for all …

An Assessment Of Bird Habitat Quality Using Population Growth Rates, Melinda Knutson, Larkin A. Powell, Randy Hines, Mary Friberg, Gerald J. Niemi

Survival and reproduction directly affect population growth rate (A.), making A. a fundamental parameter for assessing habitat quality. We used field data, literature review, and a computer simulation to predict annual productivity and A. for several species of landbirds breeding in floodplain and upland forests in the Midwestern United States. We monitored 1735 nests of 27 species; 760 nests were in the uplands and 975 were in the floodplain. Each type of forest habitat (upland and floodplain) was a source habitat for some species. Despite a relatively low proportion of regional forest cover, the majority of species had stable or …

A Productivity Model For Parasitized, Multibrooded Songbirds, Larkin A. Powell, Melinda Knutson
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
We present an enhancement of a simulation model to predict annual productivity for Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) and American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla); the model includes effects of Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) parasitism. We used species-specific data from the Driftless Area Ecoregion of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa to parameterize the model as a case study. The simulation model predicted annual productivity of 2.03 ± 1.60 SD for Wood Thrushes and 1.56 ± 1.31 SD for American Redstarts. Our sensitivity analysis showed that high parasitism lowered Wood Thrush annual productivity more than American Redstart productivity, even though parasitism affected individual nests of …

Structure And Bonding Of Au5m (M=Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, And S) Clusters, Chiranjib Majumder, Anil K. Kandalam, Puru Jena
Physics Publications
The atomic and electronic structure of Au5M (M=Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, and Au) clusters have been investigated using generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory. Depending on the nature of interaction with different impurity elements a structural transition from planar to nonplanar configuration has been observed in Au5M. With the exception of S, impurities with p electrons (Al, Si, P) yield nonplanar geometries of Au5M clusters, while those with selectrons (Na, Mg) yield planar geometries. The properties of Au5Scluster are anomalous: The cluster not only has a planar geometry, but also is chemically most stable with the …
