In Vitro Toxicity Of Aluminum Nanoparticles In Rat Alveolar Macrophages, Andrew J. Wagner Mar 2006

In Vitro Toxicity Of Aluminum Nanoparticles In Rat Alveolar Macrophages, Andrew J. Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

Nanomaterials, which are by definition in the 1 - 100 nanometer range, have numerous possible benefits to society, but currently there is a lack of data that characterizes these materials effects on human health and environment. In general nanomaterials are of interest to the Air Force because of their applications in electronics, sensors, munitions and energetic/reactive systems. Nanoparticles such as aluminum have been considered for enhancing propulsion in solid rocket fuel. To date, only a few studies have looked at the toxicological effects of direct exposure to nanoparticles, none with aluminum. It is important to increase the understanding of the …

Factors Affecting The Transfer Of Basic Combat Skills Training In The Air Force, Rodney E. Mccraine Mar 2006

Factors Affecting The Transfer Of Basic Combat Skills Training In The Air Force, Rodney E. Mccraine

Theses and Dissertations

During Operations ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF) and IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF), many Airmen in support career fields were deployed to hostile environments like Afghanistan and Iraq. Deployments of this nature are a departure from normal Air Force operations where support personnel are normally far from the front lines of battle. The purpose of this research was to understand the factors that affect the transfer of basic combat skills training from the classroom to the battlefield. Specifically, this thesis sought to answer five research questions addressing the current combat skills training requirements, the perceived training transfer of basic combat skills, the factors that …

Evolving Self-Organized Behavior For Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Uav Or Ucav Swarms, Ian C. Price Mar 2006

Evolving Self-Organized Behavior For Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Uav Or Ucav Swarms, Ian C. Price

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation uses a self-organization (SO) approach to enable cooperative search and destruction of retaliating targets with swarms of homogeneous and heterogeneous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To facilitate specific system design, a facilitating SO algebraic framework is created that emphasizes scalability, robustness, and flexibility. This framework is then used to implement a UAV behavior architecture relying upon rules governing formation and target interaction. Sets of applicable behaviors are created by weighted summation of the rules where different weights act as distinct behavior archetypes. Appropriate behavior archetypes are based upon sense information distilled from the environment and a simple perceptron mapping. …

Evaluation Of A Field Programmable Gate Array Circuit Reconfiguration System, Jason L. Ives Mar 2006

Evaluation Of A Field Programmable Gate Array Circuit Reconfiguration System, Jason L. Ives

Theses and Dissertations

This research implements a circuit reconfiguration system (CRS) to reconfigure a field programmable gate array (FPGA) in response to a faulty configurable logic block (CLB). It is assumed that the location of the fault is known and the CLB is moved according to one of four replacement methods: column left, column right, row up, and row down. Partial reconfiguration of the FPGA is done through the Joint Test Action Group (JTAG) port to produce the desired logic block movement. The time required to accomplish the reconfiguration is measured for each method in both clear and congested areas of the FPGA. …

Supplementing An Ad-Hoc Wireless Network Routing Protocol With Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Tags, Leroy S. Willemsen Mar 2006

Supplementing An Ad-Hoc Wireless Network Routing Protocol With Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Tags, Leroy S. Willemsen

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have a broad and varied range of applications, yet all of these are limited by the resources available to the sensor nodes that make up the WSN. The most significant resource is energy. A WSN may be deployed to an inhospitable or unreachable area, leaving it with a non-replenishable power source. This research examines a way of reducing energy consumption by augmenting the nodes with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that contain routing information. It was expected that RFID tags would reduce the network throughput, the ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing traffic sent, and …

Bio-Inspired, Odor-Based Navigation, Maynard John Porter Iii Mar 2006

Bio-Inspired, Odor-Based Navigation, Maynard John Porter Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The ability of moths to locate a member of the opposite sex, by tracking a wind-borne plume of odor molecules, is an amazing reality. Numerous scenarios exist where having this capability embedded into ground-based or aerial vehicles would be invaluable. The main crux of this thesis investigation is the development of a navigation algorithm which gives a UAV the ability to track a chemical plume to its source. Inspiration from the male moth's, in particular Manduca sexta, ability to successfully track a female's pheromone plume was used in the design of both 2-D and 3-D navigation algorithms. The algorithms were …

The Simulation Of Off-Axis Laser Propagation Using Heleeos, Scott L. Belton Mar 2006

The Simulation Of Off-Axis Laser Propagation Using Heleeos, Scott L. Belton

Theses and Dissertations

Emerging technology high energy laser (HEL) weapon systems create a myriad of new threats to safety as well as security. One of the primary causes of these concerns is off-axis laser propagation caused by ever-present particulate and molecular scattering medium in the atmosphere. The scatter from these aerosols and molecules can redirect some of the HEL's concentrated energy towards unintended targets such as the eyes of pilots, friendly fighters on the surface, or innocent bystanders. Of particular interest to the laser intelligence (LASINT) community is the possibility that off-axis irradiance from HEL weapon systems could be covertly measured with enough …

Comparative Analysis Of Airborne Chemical Exposure To Air Force Small Arms Range Instructors, Eric J. Cameron Mar 2006

Comparative Analysis Of Airborne Chemical Exposure To Air Force Small Arms Range Instructors, Eric J. Cameron

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines airborne chemical exposure to Air Force small arms range instructors during M16 firing of lead and lead-free bullets. Historical range information collected from 63 active duty Air Force bases identified that two thirds of the Air Force military ranges within the Continental United States are currently firing lead-free ammunition. Average 8-hr TWA exposures for lead during M16 firing of leaded ammunition were 17% of the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL). Task exposures, representing worst case conditions, were found to be 1.2 time the OEL. Two indoor and four outdoor firing ranges currently firing frangible lead-free ammunition were evaluated …

Analysis Of Bacterial Population And Distribution In The Developing Strata Of A Constructed Wetland Used For Chlorinated Ethene Bioremediation, Milton J. Clausen Jr. Mar 2006

Analysis Of Bacterial Population And Distribution In The Developing Strata Of A Constructed Wetland Used For Chlorinated Ethene Bioremediation, Milton J. Clausen Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorinated hydrocarbons and their degradation products are among of the most common organic groundwater contaminates in the United States. These compounds attack the central nervous system in animals and can affect the photosynthesis of plants. These compounds are also resistant to degradation in the environment and, because of this, pose a risk to any ecosystem in which they are present. This study identified the dominant microbial species in a constructed treatment wetland at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Samples were taken from three different depths and during each of the four seasons. These samples were …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The objective of this study was to examine the impact of chronic hyperoxic exposure (95% O2 for 48 h) on intact bovine pulmonary arterial endothelial cell redox metabolism of 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (duroquinone, DQ). DQ or durohydroquinone (DQH2) was added to normoxic or hyperoxia-exposed cells in air-saturated medium, and the medium DQ concentrations were measured over 30 min. DQ disappeared from the medium when DQ was added and appeared in the medium when DQH2 was added, such that after ∼15 min, a steady-state DQ concentration was approached that was ∼4.5 times lower for the hyperoxia-exposed than the normoxic …

African-American Students’ Performance And Secondary School Size In The State Of Texas, John R. Slate, Craig H. Jones Mar 2006

African-American Students’ Performance And Secondary School Size In The State Of Texas, John R. Slate, Craig H. Jones

Essays in Education

The relationship between school size and academic achievement of African-American secondary school students was examined. Data were drawn from the Texas Academic Excellence Indicator System for 1998, 1999, and 2000. Results showed greater academic achievement for AfricanAmerican students from large schools than for African-American students at medium and small schools. These findings were most consistent on nationally standardized tests. Results were least consistent for state wide tests and for end of course grades, but all differences found favored large schools. Higher attendance rates were found for students in small schools, but no differences were found for dropout or graduation rates. …

Nuclear Rna Surveillance In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae: Trf4p-Dependent Polyadenylation Of Nascent Hypomethylated Trna And An Aberrant Form Of 5s Rrna, Sujatha A. Kadaba, Xuying Wang, James T. Anderson Mar 2006

Nuclear Rna Surveillance In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae: Trf4p-Dependent Polyadenylation Of Nascent Hypomethylated Trna And An Aberrant Form Of 5s Rrna, Sujatha A. Kadaba, Xuying Wang, James T. Anderson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

1-Methyladenosine modification at position 58 of tRNA is catalyzed by a two-subunit methyltransferase composed of Trm6p and Trm61p in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Initiator tRNA (tRNAiMet) lacking m1A58 (hypomethylated) is rendered unstable through the cooperative function of the poly(A) polymerases, Trf4p/Trf5p, and the nuclear exosome. We provide evidence that a catalytically active Trf4p poly(A) polymerase is required for polyadenylation of hypomethylated tRNAiMet in vivo. DNA sequence analysis of tRNAiMet cDNAs and Northern hybridizations of poly(A)+ RNA provide evidence that nascent pre-tRNAiMet transcripts are targeted for polyadenylation and degradation. We determined …

The radial spoke is a ubiquitous component of `9+2' cilia and flagella, and plays an essential role in the control of dynein arm activity by relaying signals from the central pair of microtubules to the arms. The Chlamydomonas reinhardtii radial spoke contains at least 23 proteins, only 8 of which have been characterized at the molecular level. Here, we use mass spectrometry to identify 10 additional radial spoke proteins. Many of the newly identified proteins in the spoke stalk are predicted to contain domains associated with signal transduction, including Ca2+-, AKAP- and nucleotide-binding domains. This suggests that the …

Predicting Liana Crown Location From Stem Diameter In Three Panamanian Lowland Forests, Brian P. Kurzel, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson Mar 2006

Predicting Liana Crown Location From Stem Diameter In Three Panamanian Lowland Forests, Brian P. Kurzel, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In three forests that differed in annual rainfall and seasonality, the probability of a liana with a stem ≥2.0 cm stem diameter reaching the canopy was >50 percent. Lianas reached the canopy at significantly smaller size‐classes (1.5 cm) in the wet aseasonal forest, suggesting that this estimate changes with forest type. Nevertheless, as a general rule, we suggest that 2.0 cm is the minium stem diameter to examine the abundance and diversity of canopy lianas or canopy competition between lianas and trees.

A recent increase in published studies of lianas has been paralleled by a proliferation of protocols for censusing lianas. This article seeks to increase uniformity in liana inventories by providing specific recommendations for the determination of which taxa to include, the location of diameter measurement points on individual stems, the setting of minimum stem diameter cutoffs, the treatment of multiple‐stemmed and rooted clonal groups, and the measurement of noncylindrical stems. Use of more uniform liana censusing protocols may facilitate comparison of independently collected data sets and further our understanding of global patterns in liana abundance, diversity, biomass, and dynamics.

Refusal Clauses & Pro-Life Pharmacists: How Can We Protect Ourselves From Them., Minh N. Nguyen Mar 2006

Refusal Clauses & Pro-Life Pharmacists: How Can We Protect Ourselves From Them., Minh N. Nguyen

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The decades long pro-life and pro-choice debate recently broadened to now include controversy over reproductive contraception. This controversy stems from doctors refusing to participate in abortion procedures and other healthcare providers, such as pharmacists, declining to fill prescriptions for oral and emergency contraceptives. Pharmacists all over the United States claim religious and moral grounds for refusing to fill prescriptions from doctors and hospitals. This religious fundamentalism creates more than a minor inconvenience for women. The oral and emergency contraceptives in question include birth control pills and the morning after pill, both of which inhibit a woman’s ability to get pregnant. …

Systematics Of The Endangered Mauremys Mutica And Mauremys Annamensis, Jonathan Julio Fong Mar 2006

Systematics Of The Endangered Mauremys Mutica And Mauremys Annamensis, Jonathan Julio Fong

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Almost all turtle species in Asia are going extinct due to the demand for turtle products as food and medicine. A difficulty in creating effective conservation measures is that very little is known about the evolutionary relationships between populations and species. It is believed that several lineages we are currently calling species could in actuality be a complex of several species. One of these supposed species is the Yellow Pond Turtle, Mauremys mutica. Previous research has shown this group to have a tremendous amount of morphological and molecular diversity. In this study, I have used a combination of known-locality, farm, …

Radiotelemetry And Behavioral Ecology Of Neonate Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes, Alex Figueroa Mar 2006

Radiotelemetry And Behavioral Ecology Of Neonate Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes, Alex Figueroa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

By externally glueing radiotransmitters to the dorsoposterior surface of seven neonate Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes, Crotalus oreganus helleri, I monitored the behavior and ecology of this understudied age-class and species. As an alternative to surgical implantation, external transmitter attachment was less invasive, permitted frequent transmitter replacement, and did not appear to affect neonate behavior. Five neonates tracked through several transmitter replacements (48-125 d) increased 10-38% in mass, indicating successful foraging. Neonates predominately occupied grasslands and coastal sage scrub habitats. Ambush postures were frequently established near rodent features (burrows and runways). Unlike adults, the neonates frequently used arboreal positions (10% of 144 …

Comparison Of The Barnacle, Balanus Amphitrite, In Different Environments, Katsura Mastuda

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Salton Sea is a saline lake located centrally in the Colorado Desert, California. Salinity as well as nutrients of the Sea have been increasing since 1907, thus it is currently facing ecological collapse. The barnacle, Balanus amphitrite saltonensis at the Salton Sea was once thought to be a subspecies of B. amphitrite due to distinctive morphological differences between populations at the Sea and San Diego Bay. However, only one subspecies, Balanus amphitrite amphitrite, currently exists based on genetic studies. My study investigates physiological, survival, and morphological differences of B. amphitrite populations from the Salton Sea and San Diego …

Mineralized Bone Allograft In Maxillary Sinuses Histology And Histomorphometry, Sammy Stefan Noumbissi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Demineralized freeze-dried bone allografts (DFDBA) and deproteinized bovine bone xenografts (DMBBX) have been used for sinus augmentation for many years with varying results, but very little has been reported on the clinical efficacy or the histological analysis of mineralized solvent dehydrated bone allografts (MSDBA) as sinus graft materials. This study histologically and histomorphometrically evaluated an MSDBA material called PUROS to augment atrophic human maxillary sinuses.

Materials & Methods: Seven partially and completely edentulous patients requiring unilateral (n=4) or bilateral (n=3) sinus grafts prior to implant placement were selected for this study. Test grafts consisted of MSDBA, and control …

Modularity In Contracts: Boilerplate And Information Flow, Henry E. Smith Mar 2006

Modularity In Contracts: Boilerplate And Information Flow, Henry E. Smith

Michigan Law Review

Contractual boilerplate is a little like property. Such a statement might seem like a category mistake. After all, contractual boilerplate language is part of contracts, which, unlike property, are freely customizable by the parties. Contracts create rights between those parties, not against the world at large. Nor do people who devise new boilerplate terms usually have intellectual property in the provisions themselves. I will argue that, in an interesting and overlooked way, boilerplate is the first way station on the road from contract to property. In particular, boilerplate, like all legal communication, is the result of striking a trade-off between …

Medulloblastoma, one of the most malignant brain tumors in children, is thought to arise from undifferentiated neural stem/progenitor cells (NSCs) present in the external granule layer of the cerebellum. However, the mechanism of tumorigenesis remains unknown for the majority of medulloblastomas. In this study, we found that many human medulloblastomas express significantly elevated levels of both myc oncogenes, regulators of neural progenitor proliferation, and REST/NRSF, a transcriptional repressor of neuronal differentiation genes. Previous studies have shown that neither c-Myc nor REST/NRSF alone could cause tumor formation. To determine whether c-Myc and REST/NRSF act together to cause medulloblastomas, we used a …

Chaos Theory, Hypertext, And Reading Borges And Moulthrop, Perla Sassón-Henry Mar 2006

Chaos Theory, Hypertext, And Reading Borges And Moulthrop, Perla Sassón-Henry

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Chaos Theory, Hypertext, and Reading Borges and Moulthrop," Perla Sassón-Henry presents a multidisciplinary perspective to the study of Jorge Luis Borges's and Stuart Moulthrop's works. Sassón-Henry argues that there exists a tripartite relationship among Borges's texts, Moulthrop's Victory Garden, and chaos theory. The dialogue among these texts via chaos theory, bifurcation theory, and noise is what separates this analysis from former studies. Sassón-Henry concludes that by underscoring the reciprocal interconnectedness among Borges's stories, Victory Garden, scientific theory, and new media technology we also acknowledge the intricate connections among print literature, digital literature, and science, and thus move …

English Football And Its Hong Kong Television Audience, Victor Fan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "English Football and Its Hong Kong Television Audience," Victor Fan applies Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's thought in their Kafka. Pour une littérature mineure to map the relationship between the English Premier League of football (soccer) and its Hong Kong television audience/spectatorship. Fan first introduces the background of the English Premier League in relation to its increasing subjugation under Thatcherite and post-Thatcherite consumerist economy. He then examines how the Premier League as televised image transforms the game to hyperreality. Fan argues that these are conditions under which the subaltern would appropriate the hyper-sign as an individuated mental …

Cell-Signalling Dynamics In Time And Space, Boris N. Kholodenko Phd, Dsci Mar 2006

Cell-Signalling Dynamics In Time And Space, Boris N. Kholodenko Phd, Dsci

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The specificity of cellular responses to receptor stimulation is encoded by the spatial and temporal dynamics of downstream signalling networks. Computational models provide insights into the intricate relationships between stimuli and responses and reveal mechanisms that enable networks to amplify signals, reduce noise and generate discontinuous bistable dynamics or oscillations. These temporal dynamics are coupled to precipitous spatial gradients of signalling activities, which guide pivotal intracellular processes, but also necessitate mechanisms to facilitate signal propagation across a cell.
