Ten years ago, the TRIPs Agreement set a distinct tone in international law by requiring members to prioritize international trade obligations as a means to achieve national goals. Within the next five years, the AIDS crisis highlighted that compromising pressing national responsibilities - like a looming public health crisis - to fulfill international obligations may, in fact, detrimentally affect international trade. Meanwhile, access to medication continues to be an unresolved issue even as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of TRIPs and the end of the transitional period. This Article suggests that the success of TRIPs depends on its ability to …

Cardiorespiratory Responses To Physical Work During And Following 17 Days Of Bed Rest And Spaceflight, Todd A. Trappe, Scott Trappe, Gary A. Lee, Jeffrey J. Widrick, Robert H. Fitts, David Costill

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

To determine the influence of a 17-day exposure to real and simulated spaceflight (SF) on cardiorespiratory function during exercise, four male crewmembers of the STS-78 space shuttle flight and eight male volunteers were studied before, during, and after the 17-day mission and 17 days of -6° head-down-tilt bed rest (BR), respectively. Measurements of oxygen uptake, pulmonary ventilation, and heart rate were made during submaximal cycling 60, 30, and 15 days before the SF liftoff and 12 and 7 days before BR; on SF days 2, 8, and 13 and on BR days 2, 8, and 13; and on days …

A Hydrothermal After-Ripening Time Model For Seed Dormancy Loss In Bromus Tectorum L., Phil S. Allen, Necia B. Bair Mar 2006

A Hydrothermal After-Ripening Time Model For Seed Dormancy Loss In Bromus Tectorum L., Phil S. Allen, Necia B. Bair

Faculty Publications

After-ripening, the loss of dormancy under dry conditions, is associated with a decrease in mean base water potential for germination of Bromus tectorum L. seeds. After-ripening rate is a linear function of temperature above a base temperature, so that dormancy loss can be quantified using a thermal after-ripening time (TAR) model. To incorporate storage water potential into TAR, we created a hydrothermal after-ripening time (HTAR) model. Seeds from two B. tectorum populations were stored under controlled temperatures (20 or 30° C) and water potentials (400 to 40MPa). Subsamples were periodically removed from each storage treatment and incubated at 15 or …

Psychological Profiles And Adolescent Adjustment: A Person-Centered Approach, Lisa J. Crockett, Kristin L. Moilanen, Marcela Raffaelli, Brandy A. Randall

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The association between young adolescents' psychological profiles and their subsequent adjustment was examined in a sample of 606 adolescents (ages 12-13) drawn from the mother-child data set of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Cluster analysis was used to identify distinct groups of youth based on self-regulation, proneness to risk, self-worth, and perceived academic competence. Five replicable clusters were identified corresponding to optimal, average, behavioral risk, low self-regulation, and emotional risk groups. These clusters were associated with distinct patterns of adjustment 4 years later. At ages 16-17, youth in the optimal group tended to report better academic performance, less problem …

Nmr Studies Of Escherichia Coli Acyl Carrier Protein: Dynamic And Structural Differences Of The Apo- And Holo-Forms, Yangmee Kim, Evgenii L. Kovrigin, Ziad Eletr

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Two indicators of conformational variability of Escherichia coli acyl carrier protein (ACP) have been investigated, namely backbone dynamics and chemical shift variations of ACP. Hydrophobic interactions between the 4′-PP prosthetic group and the hydrophobic pocket enclosed by the amphipathic helices resulted in chemical shift perturbations in the residues near the prosthetic group binding sites and contact sites in the hydrophobic pockets upon conversion from apo- to holo-forms. At pH 7.9, destabilization of ACP due to negative charge repulsions and the deprotonated state of His 75 resulted in observed chemical shift changes in the C-terminal region. Model-free analysis showed that the …

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana Mar 2006

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana

Dissertations and Theses

Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some physiologically important organosulfur compounds were studied and the results obtained show that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules. These results not only display the usual S-oxygenation pathways that have been observed with most thiocarbamides, but also show dimerization and cyclization.

The oxidation of guanylthiourea, GTU, was studied in the presence of mildly acidic iodate and the strong oxidants bromate and bromine. The GTU reaction dynamics with iodate show clock reaction characteristics and oligooscillatory formation of iodine both in excess oxidant and reductant. The major oxidation product …

Neural-Electronic Inhibition Simulated With A Neuron Model Implemented In Spice, Robert B. Szlavik, Abuhanif K. Bhuiyan, Anthony Carver, Frank Jenkins

Biomedical Engineering

There have been numerous studies presented in the literature related to the simulation of the interaction between biological neurons and electronic devices. A complicating factor associated with these simulations is the algebraic complexity involved in implementation. This complication has impeded simulation of more involved neural-electronic circuitry and consequently has limited potential advancements in the integration of biological neurons with synthetic electronics. In this paper, we describe a modification to a previously proposed SPICE based Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model that demonstrates more physiologically relevant electrical behavior. We utilize this SPICE based neuron model in conjunction with an external circuit that allows for …

The effects of landscape fragmentation oil nest predation and brood parasitism, the two primary Causes of avian reproductive failure, have been difficult to generalize across landscapes, yet few Studies have clearly considered the context and spatial scale of: fragmentation. Working in two river systems fragmented by agricultural and rural-housing development, we tracked nesting Success and brood parasitism in > 2500 bird nests in 38 patches of deciduous riparian woodland. Patches oil both river Systems were embedded in one of two local contexts (buffered from agriculture by coniferous forest, or adjacent to agriculture), but the abundance of agriculture and human habitation within …

Asynchronous Random Boolean Network Model With Variable Number Of Parents Based On Elementary Cellular Automata Rule 126, Mihaela Teodora Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A Boolean network with N nodes, each node’s state at time t being determined by a certain number of parent nodes, which can vary from one node to another is considered. This is a generalization of previous results obtained for a constant number of parent nodes, by Matache and Heidel in Asynchronous random Boolean network model based on elementary cellular automata rule 126, Phys. Rev. E 71, 026232, 2005. The nodes, with randomly assigned neighborhoods, are updated based on various asynchronous schemes. The Boolean rule is a generalization of rule 126 of elementary cellular automata, and is assumed to be …

Incidence Of Four-Generation Family Lineages: Is Timing Of Fertility Or Mortality A Better Explanation?, Sarah H. Matthews, Rongjun Sun

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Objectives. This article estimates the percentage of lineages that include four or more generations for a sample of the U.S. population and explores how social status and race are related to lineage depth.

Methods. We assembled data from Waves 1 and 2 of the National Survey of Families and Households in order to estimate the proportion of adults in four or more generations for the Wave 2 sample (1992-1994). When necessary, we used various decision rules to overcome an absence of information about specific generations. We examine relationships between lineage depth and sociodemographic variables by using logistic regressions.

Results. The …

Impact Of An Exit Examination On English Teachers’ Instructional Practices, Kenneth E. Vogler Mar 2006

Impact Of An Exit Examination On English Teachers’ Instructional Practices, Kenneth E. Vogler

Essays in Education

The purpose of this study was to determine if a high school exit examination influences instructional practices. Data were obtained from a survey instrument given to a stratified random sample of Tennessee English teachers who teach the same content tested on their state’s exit examination. An analysis showed teachers using a balance of student-centered and teacher-centered practices including writing assignments, textbook-based assignments, supplementary materials, and open-response questions. Also, although no relationship was found between the type of instructional practice used and time spent on test preparation, over 90% of teachers spending the most amount of time preparing students for the …
