Trading The Micro-World Of Combinatorial Complexity For The Macro-World Of Protein Interaction Domains, Nikolay M. Borisov, Nick I. Markevitch, Jan B. Hoek, Boris N. Kholodenko

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Membrane receptors and proteins involved in signal transduction display numerous binding domains and operate as molecular scaffolds generating a variety of parallel reactions and protein complexes. The resulting combinatorial explosion of the number of feasible chemical species and, hence, different states of a network greatly impedes mechanistic modeling of signaling systems. Here we present novel general principles and identify kinetic requirements that allow us to replace a mechanistic picture of all possible micro-states and transitions by a macro-description of states of separate binding sites of network proteins. This domain-oriented approach dramatically reduces computational models of cellular signaling networks by dissecting …

Causes And Mechanisms, An Interview With Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, Samuel S. Gidding Mar 2006

Causes And Mechanisms, An Interview With Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, Samuel S. Gidding

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Dr. Jeremiah Stamler began his career in New York City and moved to Chicago in 1947 with his wife Rose, to accept a basic research position with Dr. Louis N. Katz. Early animal studies convinced him of the role of dietary factors, particularly cholesterol and salt, in the etiology of atherosclerotic vascular disease. Because of a strong interest in public health, he began the first of many population based cohort studies in the 1950s that subsequently defined the role of health behaviors (adverse nutrition choices, tobacco use, low physical activity) and associated measurable biologic traits, now called risk factors, in …

Heads Up!

Objective

The current study uses a within-subjects randomized design with the Timeline Followback (TLFB) method administered in groups or to individuals to determine the equivalence of these methods.

Method

One hundred and four male and female college students who reported drinking at least once in the past 3 months completed the TLFB during a one-on-one interview, as well as in a group setting days apart. The two administrations were counterbalanced among the participants. Drinking variables assessed were drinking days, average drinks, total drinks, and maximum drinks consumed both during a 3-month (90 days) and a 1-month (30 days) period.

Tools For The Edge: What’S New For Conserving Carnivores, John A. Shivik Mar 2006

Tools For The Edge: What’S New For Conserving Carnivores, John A. Shivik

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The loss of large carnivores at the edges of parks, preserves, and human habitations threatens the conservation of many species. Thus, effective predation management is a conservation issue, and tools to mitigate conflicts between humans and predators are required. Both disruptive-stimulus (e.g., fladry, Electronic Guards, radio-activated guards) and aversive-stimulus (e.g., electronic training collars, less-than-lethal ammunition) approaches are useful, and technological advances have led to many new, commercially available methods. Evaluating the biological and economic efficiency of these methods is important. However, social and psychological effects should also be considered. The management of animal damage to human property is necessary, and …

Potassium Ion Channels Of Chlorella Viruses Cause Rapid Depolarization Of Host Cells During Infection, Florian Frohns, Anja Kasmann, Detlef Kramer, Britta Schafer, Mario Mehmel, Ming Kang, James L. Van Etten, Sabrina Gazzarrini, Ana Morino, Gerhard Thiel

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

revious studies have established that chlorella viruses encode K+ channels with different structural and functional properties. In the current study, we exploit the different sensitivities of these channels to Cs+ to determine if the membrane depolarization observed during virus infection is caused by the activities of these channels. Infection of Chlorella NC64A with four viruses caused rapid membrane depolarization of similar amplitudes, but with different kinetics. Depolarization was fastest after infection with virus SC-1A (half time [t1/2], about 9 min) and slowest with virus NY-2A (t1/2, about 12 min). Cs+ inhibited …

Polarity In Plants - Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 12, Steven D. Harris Mar 2006

Polarity In Plants - Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 12, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Polarity is a fundamental property of all cells. The molecular mechanisms that underlies the establishment and maintenance of cellular polarity have been intensively studied in animal cells and yeast-like fungi. These studies reveal an emerging general principle whereby positional information is relayed to the cytoskeleton and other morphogenetic functions by conserved signaling pathways. Comparatively less attention has been directed toward the molecular basis of polarized growth in plant cells and tissues. This volume, Polarity in Plants, provides a comprehensive review of the topic that should satisfy both hardcore aficionados of plant cell and developmental biology as well as curious investigators …

Prescription Contraceptives And The Pharmacist's Right To Refuse: Examining The Efficacy Of Conscience Laws, Dennis Rambaud Mar 2006

Prescription Contraceptives And The Pharmacist's Right To Refuse: Examining The Efficacy Of Conscience Laws, Dennis Rambaud

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note examines the ethical and legal implications of pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions for contraceptives based on moral or religious objections. It argues that existing legal protections under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and professional standards already provide adequate safeguards for pharmacists, rendering additional conscience laws unnecessary. The analysis emphasizes the need to balance pharmacists' rights with patients' access to essential medications, highlighting concerns that conscience laws may hinder patient care without ensuring referrals to alternative providers.

Power-Scavenging Mems Robots, Daniel J. Denninghoff Mar 2006

Power-Scavenging Mems Robots, Daniel J. Denninghoff

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis includes the design, modeling, and testing of novel, power-scavenging, biologically inspired MEMS microrobots. Over one hundred 500-μm and 990-μm microrobots with two, four, and eight wings were designed, fabricated, characterized. These microrobots constitute the smallest documented attempt at powered flight. Each microrobot wing is comprised of downward-deflecting, laser-powered thermal actuators made of gold and polysilicon; the microrobots were fabricated in PolyMUMPs® (Polysilicon Multi-User MEMS Processes). Characterization results of the microrobots illustrate how wing-tip deflection can be maximized by optimizing the gold-topolysilicon ratio as well as the dimensions of the actuator-wings. From these results, an optimum actuator-wing configuration was …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the field of proteomics, the increasing difficulty to unify the data format, due to the different platforms/instrumentation and laboratory documentation systems, greatly hinders experimental data verification, exchange, and comparison. Therefore, it is essential to establish standard formats for every necessary aspect of proteomics data. One of the recently published data models is the proteomics experiment data repository [Taylor, C. F., Paton, N. W., Garwood, K. L., Kirby, P. D. et al., Nat. Biotechnol. 2003, 21, 247-254]. Compliant with this format, we developed the systematic proteomics laboratory analysis and storage hub (SPLASH) database system as an informatics infrastructure to support …

“Waltzing With The Monster,” Interventions With The Substance-Abusing Adolescent For Pastors, Treatment Providers, And Family, Philip A. Watkins Mar 2006

“Waltzing With The Monster,” Interventions With The Substance-Abusing Adolescent For Pastors, Treatment Providers, And Family, Philip A. Watkins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The biblical story of the "Prodigal Son" is a universal experience made significantly more precarious by the use of mind altering chemicals. A review of the literature reveals that approximately half of all problems impacting American families are caused or exacerbated by the abuse of alcohol or other drugs. This project's focus is the impact of substance abuse on the developing adolescent. Chemical "hijacking" of the brain's pleasure centers and resultant dysfunction is examined. Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention are discussed. Interventions which facilitate the young person's "homecoming" and implications for the community of faith are integrated.
