Nuclear Factor Κb Deficiency Is Associated With Auditory Nerve Degeneration And Increased Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Hainan Lang, Bradley A. Schulte, Daohong Zhou, Nancy Smythe, Samuel S. Spicer, Richard A. Schmiedt

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Degeneration of the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) of the auditory nerve occurs with age and in response to acoustic injury. Histopathological observations suggest that the neural degeneration often begins with an excitotoxic process affecting the afferent dendrites under the inner hair cells (IHCs), however, little is known about the sequence of cellular or molecular events mediating this excitotoxicity. Nuclear factor κB (NFκB) is a transcription factor involved in regulating inflammatory responses and apoptosis in many cell types. NFκB is also associated with intracellular calcium regulation, an important factor in neuronal excitotoxicity. Here, we provide evidence that NFκB can play a …

A Multivariate Prediction Model For Microarray Cross-Hybridization, Yian A. Chen, Cheng-Chung Chou, Xinghua Lu, Elizabeth H. Slate, Konan Peck, Wenying Xu, Eberhand O. Voit, Jonas S. Almeida

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Background: Expression microarray analysis is one of the most popular molecular diagnostic techniques in the post-genomic era. However, this technique faces the fundamental problem of potential cross-hybridization. This is a pervasive problem for both oligonucleotide and cDNA microarrays; it is considered particularly problematic for the latter. No comprehensive multivariate predictive modeling has been performed to understand how multiple variables contribute to (cross-) hybridization. Results: We propose a systematic search strategy using multiple multivariate models [multiple linear regressions, regression trees, and artificial neural network analyses (ANNs)] to select an effective set of predictors for hybridization. We validate this approach on a …

Can The Texas Economic Contribution Statute Be Reconciled With The Inception Of Title Doctrine?, Emilia Pirgova Mar 2006

Can The Texas Economic Contribution Statute Be Reconciled With The Inception Of Title Doctrine?, Emilia Pirgova

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment will argue that the Texas Legislature should repeal or amend the Statute because it produces results that further the inequities arising from the Inception of Title Rule, which fixes the character of the property as separate or community at the time title to the property is acquired. In addition, the Statute continues to produce confusion and uncertainties that the Texas Legislature sought to eliminate when it changed the old equitable Right of Reimbursement rule. Section II will offer a brief overview of the history of the community property system. Section III will give a summary of the old …

3-D Image Registration Using Fast Fourier Transform, With Potential Applications To Geoinformatics And Bioinformaticsa, Roberto Araiza, Matthew G. Averill, George R. Keller, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

FFT-based techniques are actively used to register 2-D images, i.e., to find the shift, rotation, and scaling necessary to align one image with the other. It is desirable to extend these techniques to the problem of registering 3-D images. Registration of 3-D images is an important problem in areas such as bioinformatics (e.g., in protein docking) and geoinformatics (e.g., in earth modeling).

Computing Variance Under Interval Uncertainty: A New Algorithm And Its Potential Application To Privacy In Statistical Databases, Richard Aló, Mohsen Beheshti, Gang Xiang Mar 2006

Computing Variance Under Interval Uncertainty: A New Algorithm And Its Potential Application To Privacy In Statistical Databases, Richard Aló, Mohsen Beheshti, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Computation of population mean E=(x1+...+xn)/n and population variance V=(x1^2+...+xn^2)/n -E^2 is an important first step in statistical analysis. In many practical situations, we do not know the exact values of the sample quantities xi, we only know the intervals [Xi-Di, Xi+Di] that contain the actual (unknown) values of xi. Different values of xi from these intervals lead, in general, to different value of population variance. It is therefore desirable to compute the range [V]=[V-,V+] of possible values of V.

This problem of computing population variance under interval uncertainty is, in general, NP-hard. It is known that in some reasonable cases, …

Animal Carcinogenicity Studies: Implications For The Reach System, Andrew Knight, Jarrod Bailey, Jonathan Balcombe Mar 2006

Animal Carcinogenicity Studies: Implications For The Reach System, Andrew Knight, Jarrod Bailey, Jonathan Balcombe

Experimentation Collection

The 2001 European Commission proposal for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) aims to improve public and environmental health by assessing the toxicity of, and restricting exposure to, potentially toxic chemicals. The greatest benefits are expected to accrue from decreased cancer incidences. Hence the accurate identification of chemical carcinogens must be a top priority for the REACH system. Due to a paucity of human clinical data, the identification of potential human carcinogens has conventionally relied on animal tests. However, our survey of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) toxic chemicals database revealed that, for a majority of the …

Eugenicism: The Construction Of Queer Space In The Works Of Octavia Butler And Samuel Delany, Freda Fair Mar 2006

Eugenicism: The Construction Of Queer Space In The Works Of Octavia Butler And Samuel Delany, Freda Fair

American Studies Honors Projects

Late nineteenth century and early twentieth century United States eugenic history is saturated with nature-nurture debates concerning human character and social development in relation to the institutionalization and popularization of genetics and biology. By interrogating eugenic testing and experimentation on those identified as sexual, racial, and national others this work will utilize eugenicism, an analytical and discursive tool developed from the history of U.S. eugenics, to perform close readings of works by Octavia Butler and Samuel Delany. As eugenics constructs subjects by imagining what they will contribute to a fitter future society, science fiction, as genre, (re)imagines the world that …

Commentary: Borders As Sites Of Pain, Claudia Strauss Mar 2006

Commentary: Borders As Sites Of Pain, Claudia Strauss

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

I consider Walkerdine's second point that social borders -- especially those of class and work -- are sites of pain. She illustrates that contention with stories of working-class British women who had university educations and moved into the middle class but never felt they fully belonged, of workers in South Wales who are dislocated by the closing of their central mine or manufacturing plant, and of Australian manufacturing workers who are trying, sometimes with great difficulty, to remake themselves as flexible service and sales workers. I was intrigued by the implication for theories of motivation. Generally, we focus on drives …

Review Of Polarity In Plants, Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 12, Steven D. Harris Mar 2006

Review Of Polarity In Plants, Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 12, Steven D. Harris

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Polarity is a fundamental property of all cells. The molecular mechanisms that underlies the establishment and maintenance of cellular polarity have been intensively studied in animal cells and yeast-like fungi. These studies reveal an emerging general principle whereby positional information is relayed to the cytoskeleton and other morphogenetic functions by conserved signaling pathways. Comparatively less attention has been directed toward the molecular basis of polarized growth in plant cells and tissues. This volume, Polarity in Plants, provides a comprehensive review of the topic that should satisfy both hardcore aficionados of plant cell and developmental biology as well as curious investigators …

Multicultural Perspectives On Delinquency Etiology And Intervention, Richard E. Redding, Bruce Arrigo Mar 2006

Multicultural Perspectives On Delinquency Etiology And Intervention, Richard E. Redding, Bruce Arrigo

Working Paper Series

In this chapter, we consider the possible reasons for the overrepresentation of African-American youth in the juvenile and criminal justice systems. We review research on discrimination in the justice system and possible differences between African American and White youth in the key risk factors for delinquency that exist at the individual, family, and peer-group and neighborhood levels. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations for treatments and interventions aimed at preventing and reducing offending and justice system involvement among African-American youth.

Numerical Distribution Of Lymphoid Nodules In The Human Sigmoid Colon, Rectosigmoidal Junction, Rectum, And Anal Canal, Ivan L. Cameron, James E. Kent, Ron Philo, Christopher J. Barnes, W. Elaine Hardman Mar 2006

Numerical Distribution Of Lymphoid Nodules In The Human Sigmoid Colon, Rectosigmoidal Junction, Rectum, And Anal Canal, Ivan L. Cameron, James E. Kent, Ron Philo, Christopher J. Barnes, W. Elaine Hardman

Biochemistry and Microbiology

There is little information on the numerical distribution of lymphoid nodules (LN) in distal segments of the human large bowel. A novel approach was therefore developed to assess the number of LN in the sigmoid colon, the rectosigmoid segment, the rectum, and the anal canal in humans. The distal large bowel from five cadavers was selected for quantitative study. The number of LN was scored macroscopically from the proximal sigmoid colon to the distal anal canal. A numerical distribution, previously unreported, consisting of two circular bands of LN was observed in each of the five cadavers. One band was located …

Rapid Signaling At The Plasma Membrane By A Nuclear Receptor For Thyroid Hormone, Hemayet Ullah Mar 2006

Rapid Signaling At The Plasma Membrane By A Nuclear Receptor For Thyroid Hormone, Hemayet Ullah

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Many nuclear hormones have physiological effects that are too rapid to be explained by changes in gene expression and are often attributed to unidentified or novel G protein-coupled receptors. Thyroid hormone is essential for normal human brain development, but the molecular mechanisms responsible for its effects remain to be identified. Here, we present direct molecular evidence for potassium channel stimulation in a rat pituitary cell line (GH(4)C(1)) by a nuclear receptor for thyroid hormone, TRbeta, acting rapidly at the plasma membrane through phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) to slow the deactivation of KCNH2 channels already in the membrane. Signaling was disrupted by …

Academic Characteristics Among First-Generation And Non-First-Generation College Students, Catrina G. Murphy, Terence Hicks

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

The present study involved a sample (n = 203) of college students and investigated the differences in academic expectations of first-generation and non-first-generation undergraduates who attended a doctoral-granting public four-year historically Black university on the eastern shore of Maryland. There were 133 first-generation and 70 non-first-generation students. This study focused on the expressed needs of first-generation and non-first-generation college students to determine whether differences exist in academic expectations. In addition, this study sought to lead to an increase in the understanding of the academic expectations shared by first-year first-generation and non-first-generation college students. This study used an ex post facto …
