Complicating "Female Suicide Bombers" : Violence, Agency And Gender In The Rhetoric Of Shahida, Chelsea Rock Apr 2006

Complicating "Female Suicide Bombers" : Violence, Agency And Gender In The Rhetoric Of Shahida, Chelsea Rock

Honors Theses

Since 2002, popular Western news media has become fixated with the "advent" of the Palestinian female suicide bomber when a woman named Wafa Idris detonated herself on a busy Jaffa Road in Israel. Questions about gender, domesticity, violence, subjectivity, and technology arise as researchers, journalists and others confront culturally conceived notions about women and their roles in both Islamic and Western societies. Proposing a broader concept of violence that is cognizant of women's violent histories and struggles over agency, this essay suggests that analyses of women and violence are incomplete without critically thinking about the "female suicide bomber"--or shahida--within their …

Social Hierarchy In Leaderless Groups, Angie B. White Apr 2006

Social Hierarchy In Leaderless Groups, Angie B. White

Honors Theses

The idea of social rank-ordering (indicative of status. dominance. or potential leadership capacity) was first extensively researched by Robert F. Bales in the early I 950's. Bales shaped group communication around the principle that groups inevitably evolve into unequal power structures and develop a hierarchy of participation and status (Bales et. al, 1951 ). This hierarchy is evident in many different areas of life, such as social interactions, socio-economic status, and task-related rank, and the idea of dominance is established early on in life. From 1961, when Gellert observed dyads of 4- to 6- year-old children and found that a …

There are relationship between environmental issues and other issues that enclose to the human life. There are two dimensions of Environmental contex, namely: physical spatial context and social context. In fact, anthropogenic activities have serious impacts to the damage of the environment. The relation between environmental issues and poverty is very complex. The World Bank identified three main relations between the degradation of environmental condition and the living condition of poor people, namely: the environmental health, the livelihoods of poor people, and the vulnerability of people living below poverty line.

Effects Of Smoke And Fire-Related Cues On Panstemon Barbatus Seeds, Scott R. Abella Apr 2006

Effects Of Smoke And Fire-Related Cues On Panstemon Barbatus Seeds, Scott R. Abella

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Previous research has found that exposure to fire-related cues enhances germination of some plant species, and such species may exist in frequent-fire southwestern United States Pinus ponderosa forests. I performed four greenhouse experiments with Penstemon barbatus, a perennial forb common in P. ponderosa forests, testing seed responses to liquid and air smoke, charred P. ponderosa wood and leachate, heat and emergence substrates. Liquid smoke increased P. barbatus emergence to as high as 63%, 44% greater than controls, and enhanced emergence in all 4 experiments. Air smoke produced by burning P. ponderosa litter for 15 min appeared to increase emergence similar …

Impact Of Personality Traits On Telework Satisfaction Affective Commitment And Turnover Intention Among Teleworkers, Heather J. Downey Apr 2006

Impact Of Personality Traits On Telework Satisfaction Affective Commitment And Turnover Intention Among Teleworkers, Heather J. Downey

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the usefulness of a six factor personality model for predicting telework satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intention in a secondary data analysis of 166 teleworkers. First, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the fit of self-efficacy and methodicalness as first-order factors of conscientiousness. Support was not found for this model; methodicalness and selfefficacy differentially predicted the same outcome suggesting that they are distinct constructs. These results also suggested that a six factor model for personality was appropriate to use in the remaining analyses. Results from multiple regression demonstrated that the combination of personality variables significantly …

Intelligent System Applications Based On Genetic Algorithms, Yasin Volkan Pehlivanoglu Apr 2006

Intelligent System Applications Based On Genetic Algorithms, Yasin Volkan Pehlivanoglu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

As a stochastic search method, evolutionary algorithm (EA) is an emergent optimization algorithm mimicking the natural evolution, where a "biological population" evolves over generations to adapt to an environment by selection, recombination, and mutation. When EA is applied to optimization problems, fitness, individual, and genes usually correspond to an objective function value, a design candidate, and design variables, respectively.

One of the key features of EA is that they search from multiple points in design space, instead of moving from a single point as in gradient-based methods. Furthermore, EA works on function evaluations alone and does not require derivatives or …

Tuqr: A Topology Unaware Qos Routing Protocol For Manets, Ibrahim Zagli Apr 2006

Tuqr: A Topology Unaware Qos Routing Protocol For Manets, Ibrahim Zagli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, the main purpose is to design a new Quality of Service (QoS) Routing Protocol for Mobile ad-hoc Networks that improves packet delivery ratio in QoS constrained communication in comparison to current well known protocols by using distributed multi-path routing. To accomplish that, a new approach to the QoS routing in Mobile ad hoc Networks (MANET) is developed to reduce the effects of the distrustful environment of MANET by keeping a number of suitable paths as high as possible and distributing the decision mechanism among the nodes on the path.

In most current protocols that mainly evaluate and …

"Your Life Is Waiting!": Symbolic Meanings In Direct-To-Consumer Antidepressant Advertising, Jean M. Grow, Jin Seong Park, Xiaoqi Han

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This semiotic analysis demonstrates how pharmaceutical companies strategically frame depression within the hotly contested terrain of direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising. The study tracks regulation of the pharmaceutical industry, relative to DTC advertising, including recent industry codes of conduct. Focusing on the antidepressant category, and its three major brands—Paxil (GlaxoSmithKline), Prozac (Eli Lilly), and Zoloft (Pfizer)—this comparative study analyzes 7 years of print advertising following deregulation in 1997. The authors glean themes from within the advertising texts, across the drug category and within individual-brand campaigns. The findings indicate that DTC advertising of antidepressants frames depression within the biochemical model of causation, privileges …

Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field Effects On Cell Cycle And Apoptosis, Emily H. Hall Apr 2006

Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field Effects On Cell Cycle And Apoptosis, Emily H. Hall

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Apoptosis, programmed cell death, is a highly regulated and complex pathway essential for embryonic development, immune-system function and maintenance of tissue homeostasis where cells induce their own cell death. Cells undergoing apoptosis exhibit a distinctive phenotype characterized by maintenance of membrane integrity, cell shrinkage, phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization at the plasma membrane, caspase protease activation, DNA fragmentation, release of cytochrome c from the mitochondrion, and membrane blebbing. An important regulatory protein in the apoptotic pathway is p53. The p53 protein functions to modulate the cell cycle by arresting cells in the G1 and G 2 phases to repair DNA damage, and/or …

Modulation Of Tgfβ-Induced Pai -1 Expression By Changes In Actin Polymerization In Human Mesangial Cells, Keyur Patel Apr 2006

Modulation Of Tgfβ-Induced Pai -1 Expression By Changes In Actin Polymerization In Human Mesangial Cells, Keyur Patel

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Chronic renal diseases show increased deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the glomerulus (glomerulosclerosis). Glomerulosclerosis is associated with activation of normally quiescent glomerular mesangial cells into myofibroblast-like cells. The overall objective of this study is to delineate cellular mechanism/s of myofibroblast-differentiation in disease states. In cultured mesangial cells certain characteristics of myofibroblast differentiation (α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and hypertrophy) are associated with an increase in polymeric actin microfilaments (stress fibers). It is likely that other genes are also regulated in an actin cytoskeleton-dependent manner during myofibroblast differentiation. In these studies, we therefore examined the hypothesis that changes in the actin …

The Study Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression, Function, And Regulation In The Renal Vasculature During Postnatal Renal Development, Brian Blake Ratliff Apr 2006

The Study Of Nitric Oxide Synthase Expression, Function, And Regulation In The Renal Vasculature During Postnatal Renal Development, Brian Blake Ratliff

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

The newborn kidney is vulnerable to vasomotor acute renal failure (ARF) from adverse perinatal events or complications of prematurity. Nitric oxide (NO) vasodilation is vitally protective in this type of ARF, but its relationship with other vasoactive factors, such as angiotensin II (AII) has not been examined. In the immature kidney, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms, specifically eNOS and nNOS, are developmentally regulated, but their specific role and regulation are unknown.

The enhanced vasodilatory role of NO in the immature kidney was hypothesized to be attributed to regulatory, expressional, and functional differences in eNOS and nNOS isoforms from the adult. …

Spectral Shape As An Indicator Of Molecular Weight In Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter, John Robert Helms Apr 2006

Spectral Shape As An Indicator Of Molecular Weight In Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter, John Robert Helms

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Spectral slope is a term used to parameterize featureless absorbance spectra according to their shape. Spectral slope is obtained by calculating the slope of the log-linearized absorption spectrum over a given range of wavelengths. Past studies have shown that spectral slope is related to molecular size in fulvic acids. A simple method of spectral analysis that compares spectral slopes obtained from two distinct regions of the UV spectra of aquatic dissolved organic matter is demonstrated. The ratio of these slopes (RS) shows considerable change during photo-oxidation, variation within estuaries, and substantial shifts with depth in the upper 1000 …

Voltage-Dependent Gating Rearrangements In The Intracellular T1-T1 Interface Of A K+ Channel., Guangyu Wang, Manuel Covarrubias Apr 2006

Voltage-Dependent Gating Rearrangements In The Intracellular T1-T1 Interface Of A K+ Channel., Guangyu Wang, Manuel Covarrubias

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The intracellular tetramerization domain (T1) of most eukaryotic voltage-gated potassium channels (Kv channels) exists as a "hanging gondola" below the transmembrane regions that directly control activation gating via the electromechanical coupling between the S4 voltage sensor and the main S6 gate. However, much less is known about the putative contribution of the T1 domain to Kv channel gating. This possibility is mechanistically intriguing because the T1-S1 linker connects the T1 domain to the voltage-sensing domain. Previously, we demonstrated that thiol-specific reagents inhibit Kv4.1 channels by reacting in a state-dependent manner with native Zn(2+) site thiolate groups in the T1-T1 interface; …
