Trust In Wildland Fire And Fuel Management Decisions, William T. Borrie, Adam Liljeblad Apr 2006

Trust In Wildland Fire And Fuel Management Decisions, William T. Borrie, Adam Liljeblad

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Public land managers are stewards of public lands and of the relationship between the public and these lands. Maintaining one aspect of this relationship, trust in the agency, can be challenging. Lack of trust can influence public response to management decisions, including about wildland fire use. By considering the factors that influence trust, managers can be more effective in accomplishing fire stewardship objectives.

Articulating Silence In The Postcolonial Indian Novel, Kaelin O'Connell Apr 2006

Articulating Silence In The Postcolonial Indian Novel, Kaelin O'Connell

Honors Theses

Whatever is worth seeing or hearing in India can be expressed in writing. As soon as everything of importance is expressed in writing, a man who is duly qualified may obtain more knowledge of India in one year, in his closet in England, than he could obtain during the course of the longest life, by the use of his eyes and ears in India.

-James Mill, The History of British India, 1817.

This quotation, from the first philosophical history of India, posits the common British colonial notion that language, specifically the written word, might capture all that is "worth …

Regional Ocean Governance: The Perils Of Multiple-Use Management And The Promise Of Agency Diversity, Josh Eagle Apr 2006

Regional Ocean Governance: The Perils Of Multiple-Use Management And The Promise Of Agency Diversity, Josh Eagle

Faculty Publications

Two high-level committees - the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Oceans Commission - have recently issued reports expressing grave concerns about the condition of America's oceans. In these reports, the commissions suggest that institutional flaws underlie current problems. Specifically, the commissions' views are that state and federal agencies with marine jurisdiction lack the mechanisms, and the incentives, to coordinate their management activities. Accordingly, both commissions recommend the creation of regional ocean governance bodies. Although the commissions' designs differ, their goal is the same: management that operates on a larger scale and incorporates more ocean interests. This article …

Producing Norms: Same-Sex Marriage, Refiguring Kinship And The Cultural Groundswell Of Queer Coupledom, Rob Cover Apr 2006

Producing Norms: Same-Sex Marriage, Refiguring Kinship And The Cultural Groundswell Of Queer Coupledom, Rob Cover

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Poststructuralist feminism, postmodern inquiry, queer theory and various radical and liberal-humanist forms of lesbian/gay rights have worked to undo the claim to the naturalness of masculine-feminine and male-female complementarity in sex and relationships. That is, the rhetorical grounding of the very notion of relationship ‘coupledom’ has been put in question over the past half-century and opened the possibility of a radical reorganisation of modern kinship. The destabilising impact on much contemporary western legislation concerning family, children, IVF access, adoption, immigration rights and social security centers on whether or not the subject of that legislation is ‘single’ or ‘coupled’. Such legislation …

The Phenomenology Of Nonidentity And Theatrical Presence In M. Butterfly, William S. Haney Ii Apr 2006

The Phenomenology Of Nonidentity And Theatrical Presence In M. Butterfly, William S. Haney Ii

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

David Henry Hwang’s postmodernist play M. Butterfly, abounds with alienation devices for deconstructing the notion of a unified subject. This essay, however, seeks to challenge the assumed poststructuralist vantage-point that the self and the metaphysics of presence are illusory by exploring what holds the play's identities together as dynamic matrices that function coherently within their discursive contexts. How tenable is the constructivist claim that our shifting subject positions designated by power relations are self-sustaining, that the self does not in fact extend beyond the material tokens of narrative conventions and discursive fields? Even if performers and audience can shift …

This course will provide a guided investigation into advanced computational techniques in bioinformatics, especially techniques involving evolutionary computation. The first few weeks will consists of guided in-class discussions reviewing the basic principles of bioinformatics and evolutionary computation. During weeks 3 -6 students will present tutorials on advanced computational topics (see the list of suggested topic areas below). During weeks 7 -10, the students will present papers from the literature in which topics covered in the tutorials have been applied to specific problems in bioinformatics. The class will discuss the quality and findings of these papers.

Enhanced Cold Tolerance In Transgenic Tobacco Expressing A Chloroplast Omega-3 Fatty Acid Desaturase Gene Under The Control Of A Cold-Inducible Promoter, Mariya Khodakovskaya, Richard Mcavoy, Jeanne Peters, Hao Wu, Yi Li

Plant Science Articles

A new cold-inducible genetic construct was cloned using a chloroplast-specific omega-3-fatty acid desaturase gene (FAD7) under the control of a cold-inducible promoter (cor15a) from Arabidopsis thaliana. RT-PCR confirmed a marked increase in FAD7 expression, in young Nicotiana tabacum (cv. Havana) plants harboring cor15a-FAD7, after a short-term exposure to cold. When young, cold-induced tobacco seedlings were exposed to low-temperature (0.5, 2 or 3.5 degrees C) for up to 44 days, survival within independent cor15a-FAD7 transgenic lines (40.2-96%) was far superior to the wild type (6.7-10.2%). In addition, the major trienoic fatty acid species remained stable …
