The Effects Of 9/11 On The Fire Fighter Labor Market, Kathleen Frawley '06 Apr 2006

The Effects Of 9/11 On The Fire Fighter Labor Market, Kathleen Frawley '06

The Park Place Economist

The purpose of this study is to look at this apparent increase in demand for fire protection services in the theoretical framework of derived demand. The theory of derived demand tells us that the demand for labor in a certain field is determined by the demand for the goods or services produced by that labor (Freeman, 1972). More specifically, we should expect to see a shift to the right of the demand curve for fire protection services since September Eleventh. This should lead to greater employment levels and higher wages in the labor market for fire fighters.

Implications Of Same-Sex Couples Being Denied The Right To Marriage: A Look At Federal Income Tax Structure And Social Security Benefits, Adam M. Gray '06

The Park Place Economist

Much recent news has focused on promoting traditional lifestyles and banning or discouraging all others. However, an overview of society shows that the proportion of traditional families are becoming fewer and fewer. These traditional families are those consisting of one man and one woman living together with the possibility of children, either biological or adopted. Non-traditional families include divorced families, single-parent families, opposite-sex partners, and same-sex partners. The US government legally recognizes one type of family: opposite-sex, married partners. This recognition provides tax breaks, insurance benefits and life and death decision making for the spouse and children. If this is …

Purchased Inputs Versus Time Inputs In Child Development, Nick Holland '06 Apr 2006

Purchased Inputs Versus Time Inputs In Child Development, Nick Holland '06

The Park Place Economist

This study considers the question: Does participating in daycare outside the home put the child at a future disadvantage? However, there appears to be two forces at work which may result in two different answers to this question. One or two possibilities may happen when a child participates in daycare. First, the child loses nurturing time with his or her parents. This effect, the lost time effect, should hinder a child’s development. The second effect is the purchased input effect. A child who is in daycare spends less time with his or her parents, but that parent is able to …

High School Dropout Determinants: The Effect Of Poverty And Learning Disabilities, Adrienne Ingrum '06 Apr 2006

High School Dropout Determinants: The Effect Of Poverty And Learning Disabilities, Adrienne Ingrum '06

The Park Place Economist

Numerous studies have found determinants of high school completion; most studies focus on socioeconomic and academic performance factors. This research aims to study the impact of socioeconomic status and learning disabilities, specifically the impact that socioeconomic status has on the prevalence of learning disabilities, and then the impact learning disabilities has on high school completion. Moreover, this study aims to determine if an interaction between these two factors exists, thereby causing an increased disadvantage of attaining a high school education for these students possessing both of these characteristics. Additionally, this study will show the effectiveness of the current efforts towards …

Peptide Yy And Proglucagon Mrna Expression Patterns And Regulation In The Gut, Jun Zhou, Maren Hegsted, Kathleen L. Mccutcheon, Michael J. Keenan, Aochun Xi, Anne M. Raggio, Roy J. Martin

Faculty Publications

Objective: Peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide-1 are important in the control of energy homeostasis and are both secreted from the gut in response to ingested nutrients. However, more studies are needed on nutrient regulation of their gene expression patterns in specific areas of the gut. This study detailed PYY and proglucagon (the gene that encodes glucagon-like peptide-1) gene expression patterns and regulation in the gut. We further examined the regulation of PYY and proglucagon mRNA by a diet containing fermentation- resistant starch (in vivo) and butyrate (in vitro). Research Methods and Procedures: Quantitative real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction …

Lung Circulation Modeling: Status And Prospect, Anne V. Clough, Said H. Audi, Robert C. Molthen, Gary S. Krenz

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Mathematical modeling has been used to interpret anatomical and physiological data obtained from metabolic and hemodynamic studies aimed at investigating structure-function relationships in the vasculature of the lung, and how these relationships are affected by lung injury and disease. The indicator dilution method was used to study the activity of redox processes within the lung. A steady-state model of the data was constructed and used to show that pulmonary endothelial cells may play an important role in reducing redox active compounds and that those reduction rates can be altered with oxidative stress induced by exposure to high oxygen environments. In …

African American Literature: Books To Stoke Dreams, Jane M. Gangi, Aimee Ferguson

Education Faculty Publications

In addition to market forces, unconsciously damaging trends in many textbooks for teacher education have resulted in classroom trade book collections that represent children who are primarily white and middle class. While all children—whether from Argentina, Afghanistan, or Algeria—deserve to see themselves and their families in books, the focus of this article is on new publications that depict African Americans.

Teachers who are committed to learning all they can about multicultural literature and culturally and gender relevant pedagogy become agents of change.

Filling In The Gaps: Extrasystemic Mechanisms For Addressing Imbalances Between The International Legal Operating System And The Normative System, Charlotte Ku, Paul F. Diehl Apr 2006

Filling In The Gaps: Extrasystemic Mechanisms For Addressing Imbalances Between The International Legal Operating System And The Normative System, Charlotte Ku, Paul F. Diehl

Faculty Scholarship

What happens when there is an imbalance between the operating and normative systems of international law? One obvious outcome is nothing; the imbalance remains, and the norms of the system are not given full effect. For example, human rights provisions abound, but they can be widely ignored in the absence of enforcement mechanisms. In this article, we identify several other possibilities. Our contention is that adaptations occur that compensate for, or at least mitigate, the effects of the operating-normative systems imbalance. Specifically, we explore four kinds of extrasystemic (at least from the perspective of the international legal system) adaptations: (1) …

The Contradictory Definitions Of Heterochromatin: Transcription And Silencing, Kathryn Huisinga, Brent Brower-Toland, Sarah C.R. Elgin Apr 2006

The Contradictory Definitions Of Heterochromatin: Transcription And Silencing, Kathryn Huisinga, Brent Brower-Toland, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

Eukaryotic genomes are packaged in two general varieties of chromatin: gene-rich euchromatin and gene-poor heterochromatin. Each type of chromatin has been defined by the presence of distinct chromosomal proteins and posttranslational histone modifications. This review addresses recent findings that appear to blur the definitions of euchromatin and heterochromatin by pointing to the presence of typically heterochromatic modifications (including H3K9me) in euchromatin and typically euchromatic enzymes (including RNA polymerases) in heterochromatin. We discuss the implications of these new findings for the current definition of heterochromatin.

Automated Oxidase-Coupled Amperometric Microsensor With Integrated Electrochemical Actuation System For Continuous Sensing Of Saccharoids, Yadunandana Yellambalase, Jongwon Park, Chang-Soo Kim, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Fabrizio Lombardi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent developments for biosensors have been mainly focused on miniaturization and exploratory use of new materials. It should be emphasized that the absence of a novel "in-situ self-calibration/diagnosis technique" that is not connected to an external apparatus is a key obstacle to the realization of a biosensor for continuous use with minimum attendance. To address this deficiency, a novel needle-type biosensor system with fully automated operations is being developed, in which a novel oxidase-coupled amperometric sensor with oxygen depleting/generating actuator is interfaced with an electrochemical instrument and a perfusion system. Labview virtual instrument has been also developed to oversee the …

Predicting Distribution, Habitat Suitability And The Potential Loss Of Habitat For Sitta Formosa, The Beautiful Nuthatch, Jill C. Witt

Masters Theses

The beautiful nuthatch, Sitta formosa, occurs in high-altitude evergreen and semi-evergreen forests throughout the south and southeastern extent of the Himalayan Mountains. Populations of S. formosa are small, declining and severely fragmented as a result of habitat degradation and fragmentation, and therefore it is considered vulnerable by the World Conservation Union and is included in the 2004 Red List of Threatened Species. I used ecological niche factor analysis to model the potential distribution and predict suitable habitat for S. formosa. By using 59 presence locations, collected from museum specimens and biodiversity surveys, and together with topographic and …

A Time-Based Vlsi Potentiostat For Ion Current Measurements, Harpreet S. Narula, John G. Harris Apr 2006

A Time-Based Vlsi Potentiostat For Ion Current Measurements, Harpreet S. Narula, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A time-based CMOS integrated potentiostatic control circuit has been designed and fabricated. The design maintains a constant bias potential between the reference and working electrodes for an amperometric chemical sensor. A technique of converting input currents into time for amperometric measurements is proposed. This technique eliminates current amplifying circuitry, reduces matching problems, and increases dynamic range while saving on area and power consumption. Redox currents ranging from 1 pA to 200 nA can be measured with a maximum nonlinearity of ±0.1% over this range. The design can be used to generate cyclic voltammograms for an electrochemical reaction by sweeping the …

Large Scale Growth And Magnetic Properties Of Fe And Fe₃O₄ Nanowires, Jinbo Yang, H. Xu, Shaoxin You, X.-D. Zhou, C. S. Wang, William B. Yelon, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fe and Fe3O4 nanowires have been synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5, followed by heat treatments. The Fe wires are formed through the aggregation of nanoparticles generated by decomposition of Fe(CO)5. A core-shell structure with an iron oxide shell and Fe core is observed for the as-prepared Fe wires. Annealing in air leads to the formation of Fe2O3/Fe3O4 wires, which after heat treatment in a N2/alcohol atmosphere form Fe3O4 wires with a sharp Verwey [Nature (London) 144, 327 (1939)] transition at 125 K. The Fe3O4 wires have coercivities of 261 and 735 Oe along the wire axis at RT and …
