Natural History Of The Quarry Trail, Genevive Espinoza, Megan Michael, Shayla Williamson

Student Research

We tested the effectiveness of an interpretive trail guide in promoting environmental education at the nature park. Our sample consisted of 98 introductory biology students at DePauw University. Our study investigated the impact of environmental education with the interpretive trail guides as a tool for changing student attitudes toward nature. Conservation biology and human impacts were highlighted in the trail guides and selection of the points of interest along the quarry guide. We designated 11 points along the quarry trail. Our trail guide incorporated aspects of the quarry trail that were relevant to conservation biology and significant historically. Pre and …

Learning Sustainable Design Through Service, Karim Al-Khafaji, Margaret Catherine Morse Apr 2006

Learning Sustainable Design Through Service, Karim Al-Khafaji, Margaret Catherine Morse

Higher Education

Environmental sustainability and sustainable development principles arc vital topics that engineering education has largely failed to address. Service-learning, which integrates social service into an academic setting, is an emerging tool that can be leveraged to teach sustainable design to future engineers. We present a model of using service-learning to teach sustainable design based on the experiences of the Stanford chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World. The model involves the identification of projects and partner organizations, a student led, project-based design course, and internships coordinated with partner organizations. The model has been very successful, although limitations and challenges exist. These …

Supreme Guidance For Wet Growth: Lessons From The High Court On The Powers And Responsibilities Of Local Governments, Michael Allan Wolf Apr 2006

Supreme Guidance For Wet Growth: Lessons From The High Court On The Powers And Responsibilities Of Local Governments, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

Before the merger of water law and land use planning can occur, local and state regulators need strong guidance from experts in the field, not only in extra-legal fields such as planning, hydrology, geology, engineering, biology, and transportation, but also in mainstream legal areas including legislation (local, state, and federal), administrative law, and enforcement. The purpose of this article is to identify a somewhat unorthodox source of guidance - the United States Supreme Court, specifically the Rehnquist Court from October, 1984, through June, 2005, a period of remarkable stability for the nation’s highest tribunal.

Incapacitation Through Maiming: Chemical Castration, The Eighth Amendment, And The Denial Of Human Dignity, John F. Stinneford Apr 2006

Incapacitation Through Maiming: Chemical Castration, The Eighth Amendment, And The Denial Of Human Dignity, John F. Stinneford

UF Law Faculty Publications

This year marks the tenth anniversary of California's enactment of the nation's first chemical castration law. This law requires certain sex offenders to receive, as part of their punishment, long-term pharmacological treatment involving massive doses of a synthetic female hormone called medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). MPA treatment is described as chemical castration because it mimics the effect of surgical castration by eliminating almost all testosterone from the offender's system. The intended effect of MPA treatment is to alter brain and body function by reducing the brain's exposure to testosterone, thus depriving offenders of most (or all) capacity to experience sexual desire …

A Study On The Cytological Effects Of Myrobalan (Fruit Of Terminalia Chebula) In Allium Tests, H. S. Rathore Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present study was aimed to find the cytogenetic effects of myrobalan using Allium cepa as a model system. The onion bulbs were grown in the suspension of myrobalan in tap water at various concentrations (0.01, 0.10, 1.0, 10.0 and 30 mg/ml) for 96 hours. The mean root length, the colour of growing roots as well as the mitotic index and chromosomal aberrations were observed in the presence of myrolaban, in order to assess the cytological effects of myrobalan. The colour of growing roots was not affected at 0.01 and 0.1 mg/ml myrobalan concentrations, while it appeared pale at 1 …

Evaluation Of Natural-Source Vitamin E, Rrr-Α-Tocopheryl Acetate, As A Micronutrient In Sunshine Bass Feed, Jesse T. Trushenski, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

A variety of vitamin E isomers can be used in the manufacture of animal feeds, though the efficacy of these sources varies. Our purpose was to evaluate natural-source vitamin E, RRR-a-tocopheryl acetate (NSVE), as an alternative to synthetic vitamin E, all-rac-a-tocopheryl acetate (SYNE), in the diets of sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops X male striped bass M. saxatilis). Our specific objectives were to evaluate graded levels of NSVE in terms of meeting the vitamin E requirement of sunshine bass and to address the physiological and economic suitability of NSVE by direct comparison with SYNE. Five isocaloric, isonitrogenous, …

Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler Apr 2006

Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler

Publications

Much of the criticism leveled at aquaculture (e.g., dependency on animal-derived feedstuffs, nutrient-laden effluent discharges, and increased organic contamination in edible products) can be traced to the feeds in use. Accordingly, finfish nutritionists are being challenged to formulate feeds that not only meet the nutritional requirements of livestock but also minimize production costs, limit environmental impacts, and enhance product quality. These challenges not only add considerable complexity to finfish nutrition but also afford opportunities to avoid some of the mistakes made by other industries in the past. From a review of the current status of finfish nutrition with respect to …

Gaining Options: A Mathematics Program For Potentially Talented At-Risk Adolescent Girls, Pamela Trotman Reid, Sally K. Roberts

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

In response to indicators that a decline in interest in mathematics occurs among girls—particularly those from low-income and minority groups—during middle school, the GO-GIRL (Gaining Options: Girls Investigate Real Life) program was designed to help potentially talented at-risk girls. The program aimed to build mathematical confidence, skills, and conceptual understanding by integrating mathematics and social science research in a single-sex, technology-rich environment supported by university student mentors. The program targeted seventh-grade urban girls from public and private schools. Participants met over the course of ten Saturdays to learn research methods, computer skills, mathematics, and descriptive statistics. Quantitative data from the …

And I Will Open And Close My Petals, Molly M. Mclay '06 Apr 2006

And I Will Open And Close My Petals, Molly M. Mclay '06

Honors Projects

I have found that poetry provides not only a space for the articulation of voice, but also a space for vocal play. Unlike spaces containing singular, masterful voices, poetic space can be poly-vocal. Much more than the voice of a critical essay, the voices of poems can dream, argue, create, question, collide, sometimes all at the same time, in new and relevant ways. While some poems function with linearity and mastery-they make arguments and stick to them--others employ a more sensing, associative language. Some navigate the space between such states, or take on both at the same time, and still …

High School Dropout Determinants: The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status And Learning Disabilities, Adrienne Ingrum '06 Apr 2006

High School Dropout Determinants: The Effect Of Socioeconomic Status And Learning Disabilities, Adrienne Ingrum '06

Honors Projects

Considering the growing importance of higher education due to increased global competition, one might wonder why some students still opt to drop out of high school. Previous literature has focused on a number of determinants of high school dropouts, such as socioeconomic status and learning disabilities. However, this literature has not systematically explored the interaction between these two variables. Therefore, my research extends past literature by focusing on this interaction. A logit model is used to predict the dichotomous variable, high school dropouts, and to run simulations with varying values of the independent variables. The results show that low socioeconomic …
