The Modern Construction Of Myth [Review], Erwin F. Cook Apr 2006

The Modern Construction Of Myth [Review], Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

The Modern Construction of Myth, by Andrew yon Hendy, is an interdisciplinary survey of the construction of myth in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The author's thesis is that modern theories of myth can be divided into three broad groups, folkloristic, ideological, and constitutive, and that they all derive from an original, romantic, construct. The survey is organized diachronically, with some attention to taxonomy and axiology. I find the author's thesis entirely persuasive: what follows is meant to serve as a guide to the overall argument and additionally to highlight various important threads that remain somewhat diffuse in …

Comparison Of The Ingestion And Digestion Rates Of Ochromonas Danica Grazing On Pseudomonas Fluorescens Of Varying Food Quality, Stephen Paul Shannon Apr 2006

Comparison Of The Ingestion And Digestion Rates Of Ochromonas Danica Grazing On Pseudomonas Fluorescens Of Varying Food Quality, Stephen Paul Shannon

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Flagellate prey selection appears to depend on morphological characteristics of prey such as cell size and motility, as well as on physiochemical characteristics such as digestibility and cell surface characteristics. Pseudomonas fluorescens was grown in chemostats at four dilution rates (0.03, 0.06, 0.10, 0.13 h-1) and three temperatures (14, 20, 28°C) to produce cells of varying morphological characteristics (cell size) and physiochemical characteristics or food quality (as determined by the C:N:P ratio). Heat-killed bacteria of a given food quality were prepared and used to grow the flagellate Ochromonas danica. Ingestion and digestion rates were determined using fluorescently labeled bacteria of …

Data was collected from 74 students enrolled in one of four majors in music; music education, music therapy, instrumental performance and jazz performance, as assessed by View: An Assessment of problem solving style, which included 34 items defining problem-solving style across three dimensions including Orientation to Change (OC), Manner of Processing (MP), and Ways of Deciding (WD) scales. Subjects also provided demographic information concerning their declared major, preferred musical career, and level of education. Significant differences were found between the four groups on …

Traffic Grooming, Routing, And Wavelength Assignment In Wdm Transport Networks With Sparse Grooming Resources, Osama Awwad Apr 2006

Traffic Grooming, Routing, And Wavelength Assignment In Wdm Transport Networks With Sparse Grooming Resources, Osama Awwad

Masters Theses

While a single fiber strand in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has over a terabit-per-second bandwidth and a wavelength channel has over a gigabit-persecond transmission speed, the network may still be required to support traffic requests at rates that are lower than the full wavelength capacity. To avoid assigning an entire lightpath to a small request, many researchers have looked at adding traffic grooming to the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem. In this work, we consider the RWA problem with traffic grooming (GRWA) for mesh networks under static and dynamic lightpath connection requests. The GRWA problem is NPComplete since it …

Reshaping The World Of Scholarly Communication—Open Access And The Free Online Scholarship Movement: Open Access Statements, Proposals, Declarations, Principles, Strategies, Organizations, Projects, Campaigns, Initiatives, And Related Items—A Webliography, Paul G. Haschak, Linus A. Sims

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

[Introduction]

Since World War II, we have seen a proliferation of scholarly materials. In particular, there has been a tremendous growth in the size and cost of the primary journal literature.

With prices continuing to rise at a rate greater than the general price index, the current scholarly communication system is becoming more and more unaffordable.

The rise in the cost of serial subscriptions has forced academic libraries over the last several decades to cancel existing serial titles, add fewer and fewer new serial titles, and buy fewer and fewer books.

In is apparent, that the crisis in the scholarly …

Ecophysiolgoical Responses Of Schizachyrium Scoparium To Water And Nitrogen Manipulations, Amy Kochsiek, Veronica Ciganda, Neal Bryan, Lena Hite, Tala Awada Apr 2006

Ecophysiolgoical Responses Of Schizachyrium Scoparium To Water And Nitrogen Manipulations, Amy Kochsiek, Veronica Ciganda, Neal Bryan, Lena Hite, Tala Awada

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Nitrogen is increasing in terrestrial ecosystems as a result of agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels. This increase is expected to be accompanied by changes in water availability due to global warming. We examined the effects of nitrogen and water manipulations on Schizachyrium scoparium, one of the dominant grasses in the Great Plains. Schizachyrium scoparium responded positively to watering, with an increase in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water and nitrogen use efficiencies, and water potential. Under watered conditions, fertilization had no significant effect on measured parameters, except for nitrogen-use efficiency. Significant differences appeared between fertilized and nonfertilized plants …

Review Of Biological Control Of Invasive Plants In The United States Edited By Eric M. Coombs, Janet K. Clark, Gary L. Piper, And Alfred F. Cofrancesco, Jr., Andrew Norton Apr 2006

Review Of Biological Control Of Invasive Plants In The United States Edited By Eric M. Coombs, Janet K. Clark, Gary L. Piper, And Alfred F. Cofrancesco, Jr., Andrew Norton

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

As pointed out in the volume's introduction, biological weed control is an increasingly important tool for managing invasive plants on public and private lands at a time when this strategy is under increasing scrutiny over real (and perceived) threats to native pants and ecosystems. The volume updates and expands upon Biological Control of Weeds in the West (1996) and should be considered an essential reference for policy makers, land managers, students, and researchers involved with biological weed control throughout North America.
