Avian Influenza: Trade Issues, Toby Moore, Nancy Morgan Apr 2006

Avian Influenza: Trade Issues, Toby Moore, Nancy Morgan

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

In 2003, an outbreak of a highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza (AI) in Southeast Asia, notably in Vietnam but also in Thailand, focused extensive local and international media coverage on the disease and its potential human health consequences. The media coverage has followed subsequent AI outbreaks in the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan, and westward through Russia into Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Health officials remain on alert because the virus has crossed the species barrier, causing more than 100 human deaths over the last 2 years. Other deaths, most recently in …

Multicomponent Patterning Of Nanocomposite Polymer And Nanoparticle Films Using Photolithography And Layer-By-Layer Self -Assembly, Javeed Shaikh Mohammed Apr 2006

Multicomponent Patterning Of Nanocomposite Polymer And Nanoparticle Films Using Photolithography And Layer-By-Layer Self -Assembly, Javeed Shaikh Mohammed

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, the fabrication, characterization, and application examples of 3D multicomponent nanocomposite micropatterns (MNMs) with precise spatial arrangements are described. The ability to produce such small-scale 3D structures with versatility in composition and structure is a new development based on the integration of nanoscale layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly and microscale photolithographic patterning, enabling construction of surfaces with microscale patterns that possess nanotopographies. The techniques used here are analogous to surface micromachining, except that the deposition materials are polymers, biological materials, and colloidal nanoparticles used to produce 3D MNMs. A key feature of the resulting 3D MNMs is that the physical …

Topaz: A Firefox Protocol Extension For Gridftp Based On Data Flow Diagrams, Richard Zamudio, Daniel Catarino, Michela Taufer, Brent Stearn, Karan Bhatia

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As grid infrastructures mature, an increasing challenge is to provide end-user scientists with intuitive interfaces to computational services, data management capabilities, and visualization tools. The current approach used in a number of cyber-infrastructure projects is to leverage the capabilities of the Mozilla framework to provide rich end-user tools that seamlessly integrate with remote resources such as web/grid services and data repositories.

In this paper we apply rigorous software engineering tools, Data Flow Diagrams or DFDs, to guide the design, implementation, and performance analysis of Topaz, a GridFTP protocol extension to the Firefox browser. GridFTP servers, similar to FTP servers used …

The Effect Of Gender Schematicity On The Assessment Of Male And Female Pilots’ Competence Given Identical Scenarios, Jan D. Laplante Apr 2006

The Effect Of Gender Schematicity On The Assessment Of Male And Female Pilots’ Competence Given Identical Scenarios, Jan D. Laplante

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Gender has been identified as one of the top three categories, along with race, and age that are subject to stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination (Fiske, 1998). With the emergence of women in stereotypical male domains, gender research has never been more important. The aviation community is a prime example of one such domain.

This study examined the presence of an existing perception that male pilots are more competent then female pilots. It suggested that there does not appear to be evidence that would explain why there should be a difference in this perception of competence. It also discussed social theories …

India's Toxic Landfills: A Dumping Ground For The World's Electronic Waste, Nisha Thakker Apr 2006

India's Toxic Landfills: A Dumping Ground For The World's Electronic Waste, Nisha Thakker

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

From New Delhi in the north, to Calcutta in the south, a repetitive striking image is found in India’s metropolises. One reporter writes of a “hostile zone” in Calcutta where “high brick walls block the views of activities going on with- in.” What hides behind those walls, however, tells a chilling tale of what happens to the discarded electronics of developed countries. These electronic waste (“e-waste”) scrap yards have become common in India. Within these landfills children “as young as eight-years-old tear apart electronic components with bare hands, while vats of acid lying just a few feet away bubble like …

Enforcing The Ban On Chemical Weapons, Mea Sucato

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

A study conducted in Halabja of the long-term effects of chemical weapons exposure showed that “[t]hese chemicals seriously affected people’s eyes, and respitory and neurological systems. Children are dying ... of leukemia and lymphomas ... [there is a] large proportion of pregnancies [with] major malformations ... [which] suggest[s] that the effects from these chemical warfare agents are transmitted to succeeding generations.” This indicates that chemical weapons exposure causes “long-term damage to the DNA” and can affect the ability of an ethnic group to produce healthy off-spring. By affecting the reproductive health of an ethnic group, countries that use chemical weapons, …

The Hatch-Waxman Act And Market Exclusivity For Generic Manufacturers: An Entitlement Or An Incentive?, Ashlee B. Mehl Apr 2006

The Hatch-Waxman Act And Market Exclusivity For Generic Manufacturers: An Entitlement Or An Incentive?, Ashlee B. Mehl

Chicago-Kent Law Review

One of Congress' central goals in enacting the Hatch-Waxman Act was to expedite and encourage earlier market entry for generic pharmaceutical products. The Act provides that a generic firm may challenge a drug patent during its term by filing paperwork with the FDA that alleges either that its generic product does not infringe the relevant patent, or that the patent is invalid. If the patentee disagrees with the allegation of the generic firm, it may file suit and have a court determine infringement and validity. If the generic firm prevails in court on either count, it may enter the market …
