A Delicate Balance: Rainfall And Groundwater In Nebraska During The 2000-2005 Drought, Mark Burbach, R. Matthew Joeckel Apr 2006

A Delicate Balance: Rainfall And Groundwater In Nebraska During The 2000-2005 Drought, Mark Burbach, R. Matthew Joeckel

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Recent decreases in rainfall and the accompanying decreases in groundwater levels since 1999 indicate heightened vulnerability to drought in Nebraska and the surrounding Great Plains. Precipitation across Nebraska during 2000-2005 ranged from 72% to 108% of the 30-year normal value, with fully 90% of 150 stations reporting below-normal precipitation. Simultaneously, groundwater levels declined more than 9 m in the most heavily impacted areas, most of which were already experiencing declines due to extensive irrigation development and low recharge rates. Thus, recovery from the drought and long-term intensive land use will be particularly challenging in densely irrigated areas of Nebraska. In …

Review Of Prairie Dog Empire: A Saga Of The Shortgrass Prairie By Paul A. Johnsgard, Richard Reading Apr 2006

Review Of Prairie Dog Empire: A Saga Of The Shortgrass Prairie By Paul A. Johnsgard, Richard Reading

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Prairie Dog Empire provides a semitechnical overview on what some ecologists refer to as the Prairie Dog Ecosystem, focused on black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) and their associated vertebrate species. Given the controversy surrounding management of prairie dogs, it is surprising that such a volume has not been published previously. Leave it to that prolific guru of the Great Plains, Paul Johnsgard, to pen a book directed at filling that void at such a crucial juncture.

Review Of Red Pedagogy: Native American Social And Political Thought By Sandy Grande, Steven Crum Apr 2006

Review Of Red Pedagogy: Native American Social And Political Thought By Sandy Grande, Steven Crum

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In this intriguing book, written by an indigenous Quechua scholar whose ancestors come from Peru, Sandy Grande introduces a new term which she labels "Red Pedagogy." The term has more than one facet.
One element of Red Pedagogy is its insistence that Native Americans in general, including indigenous scholars, and non-Natives need to critique, challenge, and even reject dominant modes of thought that have been applied to indigenous populations for years. Grande provides sol id evidence that some Native scholars are currently challenging older paradigms. For example, Taiaiake Alfred, a Mohawk political scientist, questions the modern-day usage and practice of …

Precipitation And Fire Effects On Flowering Of A Rare Prairie Orchid, Gary Willson, Manda Page, F. Adnan Akyuz Apr 2006

Precipitation And Fire Effects On Flowering Of A Rare Prairie Orchid, Gary Willson, Manda Page, F. Adnan Akyuz

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

A small, isolated population of the threatened western prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera praeclara Sheviak & Bowles) occurs at Pipestone National Monument, Minnesota, in a mesic prairie that is periodically burned to control invasive cool-season grasses. During 1995-2004, monitoring counts of flowering orchids in the monument varied considerably for different years. Similar precipitation amounts in the spring and histories of burning suggest that fire and precipitation in the spring were not the causes of the variation. For the eight non-burn years in the monitoring record, we compared the number of flowering plants and the precipitation amounts during six growth stages …

Review Of Amphibian Declines: The Conservation Status Of United States Species Edited By Michael Lanoo, William Duellman Apr 2006

Review Of Amphibian Declines: The Conservation Status Of United States Species Edited By Michael Lanoo, William Duellman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Since 1989, biologists and conservationists have become concerned about the worldwide decline of amphibians, especially frogs. What species are declining? Where? Why? What can we do about it? These questions, easy to ask but difficult to answer, are broadly addressed in this thick tome containing the contributions of 215 individuals, many of whom have spent years gathering information pertinent to their discussions. The book is divided into two major parts-"Conservation Essays" and "Species Accounts." In the former are essays on declines, causes, conservation, education, surveys, and monitoring. Each species account of an amphibian known from the United States has sections …

Review Of George Beadle, An Uncommon Farmer: The Emergence Of Genetics In The 20th Century By Paul Berg And Maxine Singer, Donald P. Weeks Apr 2006

Review Of George Beadle, An Uncommon Farmer: The Emergence Of Genetics In The 20th Century By Paul Berg And Maxine Singer, Donald P. Weeks

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

George W. Beadle-1958 Nobel Prize winner, giant of the order Isaac Newton had in mind when he wrote of standing on the shoulders of scientific predecessors- provided the first compelling evidence that the units of inheritance we call genes perform their function in sustaining life by encoding information to produce myriad biochemical catalysts called enzymes. The story of Beadle's life and his development of the "one gene-one enzyme" hypothesis is elegantly laid out by Paul Berg and Maxine Singer in this scholarly and engrossing biography. Through the authors' nimble guidance, we discover an "uncommon farmer" indeed, one whose talent and …

Bison And The Food Distribution Program On Indian Reservations, David Lulka Apr 2006

Bison And The Food Distribution Program On Indian Reservations, David Lulka

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In recent years, bison products have been incorporated into the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). This paper examines the factors leading up to this particular development and the structural problems that have yet to be resolved within the program. Altogether, the findings illustrate that cultural traditions, health problems, and economic concerns instigated the federal government to embark upon this new policy. Unfortunately, while the program has responded to tribal demands in certain respects, it has not resolved underlying structural inequalities between tribal and nontribal communities. In particular, the FDPIR does not acknowledge the problematic nature of production-consumption networks …

Deposition Of Platinum Clusters On Surface-Modified Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Sang-Yup Lee, Jaewon Choi, Elizabeth Royston, David B. Janes, James N. Culver, Michael T. Harris Apr 2006

Deposition Of Platinum Clusters On Surface-Modified Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Sang-Yup Lee, Jaewon Choi, Elizabeth Royston, David B. Janes, James N. Culver, Michael T. Harris

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Nanoscaled Pt conductors were prepared from genetically engineered Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) templates through Pt cluster deposition on the outer surface of the TMV. Pt clusters were synthesized and deposited on the engineered TMV with surface-exposed cysteine via the in situ mineralization of hexachloroplatinate anions. This deposition was driven by the specific binding between thiols and the solid metal clusters. In addition, Pt-thiolate adducts are suggested to form on the engineered TMV in aqueous solutions that work as nucleation sites for the formation of the Pt clusters. The specific binding between Pt clusters and the engineered TMV template was investigated …

Dynamics Of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes, Dustin A. Sipka Apr 2006

Dynamics Of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes, Dustin A. Sipka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze nonlinear diffusion processes. In particular, some of the results arrived at by Newman and Sagan in their 1981 paper "Galactic Civilizations: Population Dynamics and Interstellar Diffusion," will be reproduced by different means. First, a thorough analysis of the linear diffusion equation will be performed in order to test a numerical algorithm that can solve the nonlinear diffusion equation and look at the processes of interest with sufficient accuracy. Once the algorithm is tested and shows good resolution it is used to solve the nonlinear equation. The post processing is then done to …

Influence Of N-Linked Glycosylation Of Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Gp5 On Virus Infectivity, Antigenicity, And Ability To Induce Neutralizing Antibodies, Israrul H. Ansari, Byungjoon Kwon, Fernando A. Osorio, Asit K. Pattnaik

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) glycoprotein 5 (GP5) is the most abundant envelope glycoprotein and a major inducer of neutralizing antibodies in vivo. Three putative N-linked glycosylation sites (N34, N44, and N51) are located on the GP5 ectodomain, where a major neutralization epitope also exists. To determine which of these putative sites are used for glycosylation and the role of the glycan moieties in the neutralizing antibody response, we generated a panel of GP5 mutants containing amino acid substitutions at these sites. Biochemical studies with expressed wild-type (wt) and mutant proteins revealed that the mature GP5 contains high-mannose-type …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) Rev is an essential regulatory protein that facilitates expression of viral mRNAs encoding structural proteins and genomic RNA and regulates alternative splicing of the bicistronic tat/rev mRNA. EIAV Rev is characterized by a high rate of genetic variation in vivo, and changes in Rev genotype and phenotype have been shown to coincide with changes in clinical disease. To better understand how genetic variation alters Rev phenotype, we undertook deletion and mutational analyses to map functional domains and to identify specific motifs that are essential for EIAV Rev activity. All functional domains are contained within the …

Relating The Cost Of Spinning Silk To The Tendency To Share It For Three Embiids With Different Lifestyles (Order Embiidina: Clothodidae, Notoligotomidae, And Australembiidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Shailesh Shenoy, Vanessa Werner Apr 2006

Relating The Cost Of Spinning Silk To The Tendency To Share It For Three Embiids With Different Lifestyles (Order Embiidina: Clothodidae, Notoligotomidae, And Australembiidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Shailesh Shenoy, Vanessa Werner

Biology

Although adult female embiids (Order Embiidina) superficially lack morphological diversity, their variety of habitats may impose distinct selective pressures on behavior, such as their use of silk and their tendency to aggregate. For example, where silk serves as a primary defense from environmental threats, coloniality might be adaptive. The cost of production or spinning might also prompt them to share silk. These ideas were tested in laboratory trials involving three species of embiids with different lifestyles: an arboreal species (Antipaluria urichi (Saussure) from a neotropical rain forest, a species (Notoligotoma hardyi (Frederichs) that dwells on surfaces of granite outcrops in …

Development Of Self-Assembled Monolayer-Based Cell Culture Platform Towards Fabrication Of A Three-Dimensional Bioreactor, Rajendra Kandoor Aithal Apr 2006

Development Of Self-Assembled Monolayer-Based Cell Culture Platform Towards Fabrication Of A Three-Dimensional Bioreactor, Rajendra Kandoor Aithal

Doctoral Dissertations

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in regulating a number of cellular properties and functions like cell differentiation, cell synthesis and degradation, cell viability and proliferation, cell function, and cell aging. Surface modification of planar substrates with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is a promising technique to achieve stable ECMs.

In this work, substrates such as silicon (Si), gallium arsenide (GaAs) and indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates were modified with SAMS containing amino (-NH2), methyl (-CH3), thiol (-SH) and carboxylic (-COOH) end groups and characterized using contact angle measurements, surface infrared (IR) spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Different cell …

Development Of A High Spatial Selectivity Tri-Polar Concentric Ring Electrode For Laplacian Electroencephalography (Leeg) System, Kanthaiah Koka Apr 2006

Development Of A High Spatial Selectivity Tri-Polar Concentric Ring Electrode For Laplacian Electroencephalography (Leeg) System, Kanthaiah Koka

Doctoral Dissertations

Brain activity generates electrical potentials that are spatio-temporal in nature. Electroencephalography (EEG) is the least costly and most widely used non-invasive technique for diagnosing many brain problems. It has high temporal resolution but lacks high spatial resolution.

The surface Laplacian will enhance the spatial resolution of EEG as it performs the second spatial derivative of the surface potentials. In an attempt to increase the spatial selectivity, researchers introduced a bipolar electrode configuration using a five point finite difference method (FPM) and others applied a quasi-bipolar (tri-polar with two elements shorted) concentric electrode configuration. To further increase the spatial resolution, the …

Muslim Women’S Religious And Feminist Identities: A Study Of Muslim Feminism In The Bosnian Context, María Lis Baiocchi Apr 2006

Muslim Women’S Religious And Feminist Identities: A Study Of Muslim Feminism In The Bosnian Context, María Lis Baiocchi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research paper explores Muslim Feminism in Bosnia Herzegovina as a phenomenon that has been developing in the past ten years or so among Muslim women.

The introduction to this paper defines the concept of Muslim feminism and examines how women’s identities as Muslim believers and their identities as women fighting for gender equality (i.e.: feminists) shape and determine one another.

I then move on to examine my ethnographic research methodology and my self reflections from the field.

Later, I give an account of the history of feminism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I pay particular attention upon the noticeable absence …

Phylogenetic Analyses Of Vitis (Vitaceae) Based On Complete Chloroplast Genome Sequences: Effects Of Taxon Sampling And Phylogenetic Methods On Resolving Relationships Among Rosids, Robert K. Jansen, Charalambos Kaittanis, Christopher Saski, Seung-Bum Lee, Jeffrey Tomkins, Andrew Alverson, Henry Daniell

Publications

The Vitaceae (grape) is an economically important family of angiosperms whose phylogenetic placement is currently unresolved. Recent phylogenetic analyses based on one to several genes have suggested several alternative placements of this family, including sister to Caryophyllales, asterids, Saxifragales, Dilleniaceae or to rest of rosids, though support for these different results has been weak. There has been a recent interest in using complete chloroplast genome sequences for resolving phylogenetic relationships among angiosperms. These studies have clarified relationships among several major lineages but they have also emphasized the importance of taxon sampling and the effects of different phylogenetic methods for obtaining …

Desire Denied: A Bibliographic Overview Of Sexual Inequality And Blind Women, Deborah M. Allen Apr 2006

Desire Denied: A Bibliographic Overview Of Sexual Inequality And Blind Women, Deborah M. Allen

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This literature review examines social science research on blind women’s experiences with sexual relationships. The findings suggest that socially constructed barriers marginalize blind women, often resulting in blind women being labeled as asexual. The intersection of able-ism and sexism positions many blind women as outsiders who do not possess sexual attractiveness. After discussing perspectives that examine socially constructed barriers rather than biological barriers to blind women’s sexuality, the paper reviews some consequences of denied sexuality, such as exclusion from heterosexual and homosexual relationships and increased risk of violence. The paper concludes with suggestions on how to challenge socially constructed barriers …
