The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2006-04-28, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the College of Wooster student run newspaper was published on April 28 of 2006, and it is eight pages long. Lowell Boone, professor of physics, concluded the faculty series with a presentation on "Heaven & Earth: Participating in the Cosmic Process." The commencement speaker for this year will be Dr. Carol Geary Schneider. The Gault library seal was stolen on March 3 and finally returned on April 5. Students are frustrated that they cannot find seats when they go to eat at Lowry. One letter to the editor is in regards to the fact that smokers deserve …

Consensual And Hierarchical Classification Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Images, Jaejoon Lee, Okan Ersoy Apr 2006

Consensual And Hierarchical Classification Of Remotely Sensed Multispectral Images, Jaejoon Lee, Okan Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Classification of remotely sensed multispectral images involves assigning a class to each pixel which has similar characteristics with known land cover. This is the important step in remote sensing to extract information about the Earth's surface. Statistical methods and computational intelligence algorithms such as neural networks are commonly used for classification. However, no single classifier can be good for all kinds of multispectral images. To obtain consistent and improved results, consensual and hierarchical approaches are applied. The proposed method consists of nonlinear image filtering, different multiple classifiers which use statistical methods or hierarchical neural networks with rejection schemes, and a …

Predicting Delinquency In Adolescence And Young Adulthood: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors, Amy E. Green Apr 2006

Predicting Delinquency In Adolescence And Young Adulthood: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors, Amy E. Green

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Longitudinal studies that track individuals from childhood into adulthood may be the best method to identify risk and protective factors for crime and delinquency. The primary goals of this study were to determine 1) the ability of risk factors identified by the end of elementary school to predict delinquency referrals, 2) the extent to which positive assets (promotive factors) add to the prediction of delinquency, and 3) potential interactions between these risk and promotive factors that moderate the relationship between risk and delinquency referrals. The final purpose was to identify gender and racial differences in these relationships. The current study …

Dolomedes Scriptus (Water Spider): Male Response To Females’ Putative Pheromones On Perches., Katherine Hunt Apr 2006

Dolomedes Scriptus (Water Spider): Male Response To Females’ Putative Pheromones On Perches., Katherine Hunt

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Sexual signals are commonly used among animals to enhance reproductive success. Chemical signals such as pheromones are commonly used to attract mates. Little is known, though, about how these signals are received or interpreted by the target. I studied the water spider, Dolomedes scriptus in the pisaurid family. Most Dolomedes species only make webs as a nursery for their young. However, females often create silk drag lines, potentially serving for species recognition. In some Dolomedes species, females who are previously mated are known to cannibalize most approaching males. Males might avoid cannibalism by avoiding mated females, particularly if they can …

Invasive Species Definition Clarification And Guidance, Invasive Species Advisory Committee Apr 2006

Invasive Species Definition Clarification And Guidance, Invasive Species Advisory Committee

National Invasive Species Council

Summary

Invasive species are those that are not native to the ecosystem under consideration and that cause or are likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human, animal, or plant health. Plant and animal species under domestication or cultivation and under human control are not invasive species. Furthermore for policy purposes, to be considered invasive, the negative impacts caused by a non-native species will be deemed to outweigh the beneficial effects it provides. Finally, a non-native species might be considered invasive in one region but not in another. Whether or not a species is considered an invasive …

Invasive Species Definition Clarification And Guidance White Paper

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

An invasive species is a non-native species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human, animal, or plant health. The National Invasive Species Management Plan indicates that NISC will focus on non-native organisms known to cause or likely to cause negative impacts and that do not provide an equivalent or greater benefit to society. In the technical sense, the term ‘invasion’ simply denotes the uncontrolled or unintended spread of an organism outside its native range with no specific reference about the environmental or economic consequences of such spread or their relationships to …

Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos Apr 2006

Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos

ETSU Faculty Works

There are many issues that relate to the efficacy of the undergraduate degree in the field of communicative disorders. Some have advocated for the elimination of the degree while others vigorously fight to maintain it. Some believe that there should be clinic associated with the undergraduate degree while others argue to have the degree but without clinic. Some state departments of education allow persons with an undergraduate degree in communicative disorders to practice in the schools, others do not. Colleges and universities are afraid that without an undergraduate degree program, their departments will be seen as vulnerable to elimination in …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Background

Validation of a novel gene expression signature in independent data sets is a critical step in the development of a clinically useful test for cancer patient risk-stratification. However, validation is often unconvincing because the size of the test set is typically small. To overcome this problem we used publicly available breast cancer gene expression data sets and a novel approach to data fusion, in order to validate a new breast tumor intrinsic list.

Results

A 105-tumor training set containing 26 sample pairs was used to derive a new breast tumor intrinsic gene list. This intrinsic list contained 1300 genes …

A Teacher's Guide To Understanding Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Alaina L. Hollis Apr 2006

A Teacher's Guide To Understanding Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Alaina L. Hollis

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Over the past decade, cognitive and behavior problems, characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, have affected millions of children around the world. Collectively, these symptoms are referred to as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; [American Psychiatric Association, 1994), and it is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder (Barkley, 1990). The collective problems that define ADHD contribute to one of the most complex childhood disorders of this time (Goldstein & Goldstein, 1998). Typically, the symptoms of ADHD are exacerbated in school settings where high demands are placed on children. Because ADHD is so prevalent in academia, teachers need to …
