Towards A More Comprehensive View Of The Use Of Power Between Couple Members In Adolescent Romantic Relationships, Charles George Bentley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the construct of power in adolescent romantic couples using multiple measures. The project examined gender differences in power, created models of powerlessness for each gender, and examined relations between power and aggression and relationship quality. Participants were 90 heterosexual couples, aged 14-18 years old, living in rural areas in Utah and Arizona. Couple members completed surveys assessing attitudes and behaviors in their relationships and a video-recall procedure in which partners rated their own and their partner's behaviors during problem solving discussion.

Few gender differences emerged in reports of perpetration of aggression, but boyfriends reported higher levels of …

Environmental, Chemical, And Genetic Reduction Of Ethylene Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Timothy J. Hudelson May 2006

Environmental, Chemical, And Genetic Reduction Of Ethylene Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Timothy J. Hudelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ethylene is an endogenously synthesized plant hormone that dissipates quickly in field conditions and seldom exceeds five nmol mol-1. Ethylene can accumulate to 1000 times this level in closed environments. The best-known effects of ethylene are its impacts on fruit ripening and senescence, yet ethylene influences growth and development throughout the plant life cycle. At low, continuous concentrations (20 to 50 nmol mol-1), ethylene reduces yield of many plants. Clean-air treatment during critical stages of floral development, silver thiosulfate (STS), and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) may delay flower senescence and reduce the detrimental effects of ethylene on peas …

Psd-Project Sequence Database, Matthew Kayala, Akhila Kambhampati, Stephanie Forschner, Bethany D. Jenkins

Bioinformatics Software Design Projects

1. Introduction

The sequencing of nucleic acids and the subsequent analysis of their encoded the genes and proteins has revolutionized biological sciences and allowed for the determination of evolutionary origins and biochemical potential of organisms. While the technology to determine molecular sequence data has become extremely powerful in terms of both automation and thoughput, sequence analysis technology has lagged behind, unable to efficiently keep up with the vast amount of sequence data being generated both in individual labs and by researchers worldwide. The foundation of robust sequence analysis is dependent on the building and maintaining of project sequence databases (PSD) …

Transisi Budaya Di Bali Dalam Novel Jerman: Wayan Zwischen Drogen Und D Monen, Lilawati Kurnia Apr 2006

Transisi Budaya Di Bali Dalam Novel Jerman: Wayan Zwischen Drogen Und D Monen, Lilawati Kurnia

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Europe has been interested in Indonesia for many centuries ago. The Dutch Government and the East-Indies Company (VOC), for example, already established the connection between Indonesian and German along with the colonization when the VOC brought the German Regiment to the islands of Indonesia. Nevertheless, this relationship was not in a friendly way but was the power one. German also adopted the domination of the colony by the Dutch. Bali as the foremost attraction for the Europe since the 19th century has become a place of destination to the western tourists in the 20th century. The transition of Balinese culture …

Kritik Pemikiran Arab: Metode Dekonstruksi Mohammed Arkoun, Siti Rohmah Soekarba

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Mohammed Arkoun is one of an international Islamic modern thinker that his thought comes into Islamic thinking discourses in Indonesia recently. His Islamic thought were influenced by the modern philosophy concepts such as "myths" of Paul Ricouer, postmodern concepts like 'discourse' and 'episteme', which were developed by Michel Foucault as well as 'deconstruction' of Jacques Derrida. If Derrida focused on deconstruction of a discourse as a final concept, on the other hand Arkoun insisted that 'deconstruction' must be followed by 'reconstruction'. Arkoun's reconstruction leaves the limitation, the rigidity and deviation from the past. Arkoun proposes two ways: firstly it is …

Valuing Cultural Differences In Behavioral Economics, Justin D. Levinson, Kaiping Peng Apr 2006

Valuing Cultural Differences In Behavioral Economics, Justin D. Levinson, Kaiping Peng

ExpressO

Behavioral economic research has tended to ignore the role of cultural differences in economic decision-making. The authors suggest that a systematic bias affects existing behavioral economic theory-- cognitive biases are often assumed to be universal. To examine how cultural background informs economic decision-making, and to test framing effects, morality effects, and out-group effects in a cross-cultural study, the authors conducted an experiment in the United States and China. The experiment was designed to test cultural and cognitive effects on a fundamental economic phenomenon-- how people estimate the financial values of objects over time.

Results of the experiment demonstrated dramatic cultural …

Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder: The Relationship Between Symptoms And Family Functioning, Meryl Yoches Apr 2006

Early-Onset Bipolar Disorder: The Relationship Between Symptoms And Family Functioning, Meryl Yoches

Psychology Honors Papers

The incidence, course, and diagnostic criteria of early-onset bipolar disorder are heavily debated within the psychological community. Although new research has solved some of the uncertainties about the disorder, questions remain about its course, presentation and specific features in childhood. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between family functioning and symptom presentation. The cases of 406 children diagnosed with bipolar disorder were examined. The statistics suggest that not only are there differences in symptom presentation among bipolar type, sex and age, there are also differences in family functioning.

Manipulation Of Polystyrene Microparticles On A Microchannel Glass, Ravi Mamillapalli, Henry D. Young

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Bulk quantities of spherical microbeads have various applications in research and industrial fields. Simple techniques are required to be developed in order to manipulate and modify large numbers of these beads simultaneously. In our experiment, a microchannel glass-based microfluidic device is used to actuate large numbers of microbeads in parallel. The microchannel glass used in these experiments contains channels 4.1 μm in diameter. The microbeads are polystyrene beads which are superparamagnetic in nature and 5-6 μm in diameter. An aqueous suspension of microbeads is injected into a 2-chamber fluid cell that contains a separator, microchannel glass. The beads are reversibly …

Prevalence Of Shiga Toxin–Producing Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Enterica In Rock Pigeons Captured In Fort Collins, Colorado, Kerri Pedersen, Larry Clark, William F. Andelt, M.D. Salman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The potential role of rock pigeons (Columba livia) in the epidemiology of shiga toxin– producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Salmonella enterica is unclear. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of STEC and S. enterica in pigeons at urban and dairy settings as a function of season. Prevalence of STEC and S. enterica was estimated by bacteriologic culture of cloacal swabs collected from pigeons trapped at urban and dairy locations in and around Fort Collins, Colorado from January to November 2003. Presumptive E. coli isolates were tested for the presence of virulence genes SLT-1, SLT-2, eae, hlyA …

Eudaimonism And The Demands Of Justice, Andrew Payne Apr 2006

Eudaimonism And The Demands Of Justice, Andrew Payne

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The ancient eudaimonists were not misguided when they gave a prominent place to the human function in their ethical theory. Most modern reconstructions of eudaimonism do not employ the human function in this way. Though this gives them the appearance of being more streamlined and plausible, they fail to unify a life which respects the demands of justice. It is evident that in the Republic and other ancient ethical works humans are presented as acting out of concern for the good of others. They show respect for justice and act from altruistic motivation, and this is one source of value …
