Martinez, Tony, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Tony and his family immigrated to the US as refugees from Cuba in 1966. When the family moved to the Bronx, they were living in an apartment in a cardboard factory. His father was also a worker at a cardboard factory in Long Island City. Unfortunately, when he immigrated, he spoke no English and was consequently put into the special education class at PS 26. One teacher that particularly inspired him was Mr. Krinler. He was able to teach Tony and because of Mr. Krinler’s efforts, Tony was moved into the top class of his grade. When he was in …

Osteogenic Differentiation Of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells On Thin Film Tyrosine Derived Polycarbonates, Tamunotoyne Briggs May 2006

Osteogenic Differentiation Of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells On Thin Film Tyrosine Derived Polycarbonates, Tamunotoyne Briggs

Theses

Mesenchymal stem cells, harvested from adult bone marrow, are promising in the field of regenerative medicine because of the vast differentiation potential into various cell lines such as: osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and neurons. Osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) could be an important tool in the treatment of orthopedic deficiencies such as bone defects. The extent of in vitro human mesenchymal stem cell growth, adhesion, motility and differentiation into osteoblasts is a function of the material surface chemistry which is mediated by protein adsorption onto the surface. A library of tyrosine derived polycarbonates allows the tailoring of material …

Network Activity Arising From Optimal Diameters Of Neuronal Processes, Juliane Gansert May 2006

Network Activity Arising From Optimal Diameters Of Neuronal Processes, Juliane Gansert

Theses

Electrical coupling provides an important pathway for signal transmission between neurons. In several regions of the mammalian brain electrical synapses have been detected, and their role in the synchronization of neural networks and the generation of oscillations has been studied theoretically. Recently, it has been found that the amplitude of the postsynaptic potential is maximized for a specific diameter of the postsynaptic fiber.

In this thesis, the impact of the fiber's diameter on the success or failure of the action potential initiation and propagation is studied theoretically. Systems of two coupled neurons, as well as small networks, are investigated. The …

Finding Role Errors Of The Ncit Gene Hierarchy Using The Ncbi, Marc Oren May 2006

Finding Role Errors Of The Ncit Gene Hierarchy Using The Ncbi, Marc Oren

Theses

Due to the knowledge discovery process of gene information, details such as organism and chromosomal location should be known. Furthermore, the extensive biomedical research in genomics led to discovery of processes and diseases in which a gene plays a role. In the Gene hierarchy of the NCI Thesaurus (NCIT) such knowledge is represented by appropriate roles. However, upon review of the Gene hierarchy of the NCIT, many role errors are found. Realizing that such details are provided by another knowledge repository of NIH, the NCBI gene database, a methodology is presented to use NCBI to discover role errors for the …

Comparative Analysis Of Parametric, Nonparametric And Permutation Methods For Differential Expression, Rahul Patil May 2006

Comparative Analysis Of Parametric, Nonparametric And Permutation Methods For Differential Expression, Rahul Patil

Theses

DNA microarrays permit us to study the expression of thousands of genes simultaneously. They are now used in many different contexts to compare mRNA levels between two or more samples of cells. Microarray experiments typically give us expression measurements on a large number of genes. Increasing popularity of microarray technology has resulted in a number of tests being proposed to detect differentials expression.

The purpose of study is to compare the parametric, non parametric and permutation tests when applied to microarray data for differential expression analysis. t test (parametric), Mann Whitney test (nonparametric) and Significance of analysis (permutation ) test …

Development Of A System To Measure Cardiac Function In The Drosophila Melanogaster Animal Model, Heather Anne Reinhardt May 2006

Development Of A System To Measure Cardiac Function In The Drosophila Melanogaster Animal Model, Heather Anne Reinhardt

Theses

Previous studies have shown that several genes are evolutionarily conserved from lower organisms to man, where a number of genes have been directly linked to cardiac function and disease. The Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit Fly) has a genome similar to humans and therefore has proven to be an important animal model to study the role of genetics in cardiac function and disease development. Fruit flies are an important basic science model because of the ease with which genes can be manipulated and quickly expressed due to the short lifespan of the fly. Although standard techniques exist to affect the genome of …

Theses

SYSTERS is a biological information integration system containing protein sequences from many protein databases such as Swiss-Prot and TrEMBL and also protein sequences from complete genomes available at Ensembl, The Arabidopsis Information Resource, SGD and GeneDB. For some protein sequences their encoding nucleotide sequences can be found in their corresponding websites. However, for some protein sequences their encoding nucleotide sequences are missing.

The goal of this thesis is to. collect all nucleotide sequences for the protein sequences in SYSTERS and store them in a common database. There are two cases. The first case is that if the nucleotide sequences can …

Habitat And Humanity: Public Lands Law In The Age Of Ecology, Jamison E. Colburn May 2006

Habitat And Humanity: Public Lands Law In The Age Of Ecology, Jamison E. Colburn

ExpressO

Public lands law in this country has been gridlocked for a decade at the intersection of democracy and ecology. The public is still led to believe that the “conservation” versus “preservation” of our discrete, bounded parcels of public land is the central political issues and that what must happen for one set of values or another to triumph is that one or another faction capture those lands parcel-by-parcel and put them under its preferred legal regime. Experts and activists have transitioned from this philosophy to the open-textured, inclusive notions of “ecosystem” and “adaptive” management on which everyone agrees in the …

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: The acquisition of high-quality DNA for use in phylogenetic and molecular population genetic studies is a primary concern for evolutionary and genetic researchers. Many non-destructive DNA sampling methods have been developed and are used with a variety of taxa in applications ranging from genetic stock assessment to molecular forensics. Results: The authors have developed a field sampling method for obtaining high-quality DNA from sunfish (Lepomis) and other freshwater fish that employs a variation on the buccal swab method and results in the collection of DNA suitable for PCR amplification and polymorphism analysis. Additionally, since the circumstances of storage are …

Intestinal Strongyloidiasis And Hyperinfection Syndrome, Raja Vadlamudi, David S. Chi, Guha Krishnaswamy May 2006

Intestinal Strongyloidiasis And Hyperinfection Syndrome, Raja Vadlamudi, David S. Chi, Guha Krishnaswamy

ETSU Faculty Works

In spite of recent advances with experiments on animal models, strongyloidiasis, an infection caused by the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis, has still been an elusive disease. Though endemic in some developing countries, strongyloidiasis still poses a threat to the developed world. Due to the peculiar but characteristic features of autoinfection, hyperinfection syndrome involving only pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems, and disseminated infection with involvement of other organs, strongyloidiasis needs special attention by the physician, especially one serving patients in areas endemic for strongyloidiasis. Strongyloidiasis can occur without any symptoms, or as a potentially fatal hyperinfection or disseminated infection. Th2 cell-mediated immunity, …

Evidence Of Hollow Golden Cages, Satya S. Bulusu, Xi Li, Lai-Sheng Wang, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The fullerenes are the first “free-standing” elemental hollow cages identified by spectroscopy experiments and synthesized in the bulk. Here, we report experimental and theoretical evidence of hollow cages consisting of pure metal atoms, Au–n (n = 16–18); to our knowledge, free-standing metal hollow cages have not been previously detected in the laboratory. These hollow golden cages (“bucky gold”) have an average diameter >5.5 Å, which can easily accommodate one guest atom inside.

After The Party, Is There A Cure For The Hangover? The Challenges Of The Global Economy To Westphalian Sovereignty, Jackson N. Maogoto, Andrew Coleman May 2006

After The Party, Is There A Cure For The Hangover? The Challenges Of The Global Economy To Westphalian Sovereignty, Jackson N. Maogoto, Andrew Coleman

ExpressO

Nation-States and their authority referred to here as national sovereignty is under threat from forces within the global economy. Although globalisation is considered to be a recent phenomenon that has now attracted the attention of writers, its origins lie with those of the nation-state as the nation-state clawed its way to dominate the international community. Nation-states achieved their pre-eminence and dominance of the international community on the backs of free enterprise and capitalism; and now this dependence threatens their very existence. Now belatedly nation-states are attempting to regulate the global economy through the IMF and the World Bank and other …

Impact On Predation Of Sea Turtle Nests When Predator Control Was Removed Midway Through The Nesting Season, Richard M. Engeman, R. Erik Martin, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard, Carrie K. Crady, Bernice Constantin, Margo Stahl, N. Paige Groninger

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The beach at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge (HSNWR) is a high-density nesting beach serving three species of threatened and endangered sea turtles. Historically, up to 95% of turtle nests at HSNWR were lost to predation by raccoons and armadillos. Consequently, predator control was identified as the most important conservation tool at HSNWR, and predator control optimized by predator monitoring led to highly successful results whereby predation had been reduced to low levels (7–13.5% of monitored nests) in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, funding shortfalls caused predator control to be curtailed with ~1.5–2 months remaining in the nesting/hatching season. We …

A Case For The Prosecution Of Kim Jong Il For Crimes Against Humanity, Genocide, And War Crimes , Grace M. Kang

ExpressO

This article provides a factual overview of the deplorable human rights situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea). It shows how the International Criminal Court (ICC) could have jurisdiction over these crimes. It provides the legal framework for establishing individual criminal liability for the crimes under the ICC’s jurisdiction. It applies this framework and the legal standards for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes to the facts existing in the DPRK, as provided by credible sources. It concludes that published facts indicate a reasonable basis to believe that Kim Jong Il, who controls the …

Individualized Treatment Rules: Generating Candidate Clinical Trials, Maya L. Petersen, Steven G. Deeks, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Statistical methods have rarely been applied to learn individualized treatment rules, or rules for altering treatments over time in response to changes in individual covariates. Termed dynamic treatment regimes in the statistical literature, such individualized treatment rules are of primary importance in the practice of clinical medicine. History-Adjusted Marginal Structural Models (HA-MSM) estimate individualized treatment rules that assign, at each time point, the first action of the future static treatment plan that optimizes expected outcome given a patient's covariates. However, as we discuss here, the optimality of these rules can depend on the way in which treatment was assigned in …
