Collection of biological particles is the first and critical step for any biological agent detection system. Towards our goal of capturing and detecting airborne biological entities in real time, here we investigate on the design of an electrostatic particle capture system. We report on the capture of airborne 100 nm diameter polystyrene nanoparticles as a model system, in swirling flows under non-uniform electrostatic fields with an electrospray aerosol generator and a homemade particle collector. The particle collector has five positive electrodes on the bottom and one large grounded electrode on the top. The nanoparticles coming into the collector were slowed …

Is teaching a profession? This article compares teachers with other professionals, such as medical doctors or lawyers, in professional knowledge, autonomy, and commitment to the welfare of the clientele. The implications for teacher professionalism include establishment of national/state standards for professional teachers, increased autonomy in teacher education, salary increase, and opportunities for promotion. However, there still remains a question of whether there will be a genuine improvement in the quality of education with “professional” teachers.

Two Perspectives On Gis/Lis Education In The United States, Gary Jeffress, Thomas H. Meyer
Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Articles
Education in Geographic information science (GIS/LIS) happens in the United States both within surveying-related academic programs and in other academic programs that use spatially oriented data and information. This article presents an overview of two such programs. The first is a four-year Bachelor of Science degree program in Geographic Information Science at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The second is a concentration with a four-year Bachelor of Science degree program in Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut (UConn). Geographic information science is the primary focus of the Texas A&M program, whereas GIS/LIS is an emphasis of the UConn program. Both …

Refugees And Asylum Seekers From Mixed EritreanEthiopian Families In Cairo, Louise Thomas
Refugees And Asylum Seekers From Mixed EritreanEthiopian Families In Cairo, Louise Thomas
Faculty Journal Articles
People from mixed EritreanEthiopian families have been caught on the ‘front line’ of hostile relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, especially since the outbreak of the 19982000 war between the two countries. This report, based on interviews conducted with refugees from mixed EritreanEthiopian families in Egypt, seeks to explain the uniquely difficult situation still faced by this group. It contends that because of their family relations with both Eritrea and Ethiopia, people from mixed families find themselves in limbo legally, socially and psychologically, and should therefore be of concern to UNHCR’s international protection regime. This report has three aims. The first …

Use Of Optimization To Develop A Correlation Model For Predicting Residual Napl Saturation, Lizette R. Chevalier
Use Of Optimization To Develop A Correlation Model For Predicting Residual Napl Saturation, Lizette R. Chevalier
Publications
Predicting the residual saturation of a trapped non-aqueous phase liquid contaminant is critical to estimating the region of contamination, the design of remediation strategies, and risk assessment. Models were developed to predict residual NAPL saturation utilizing optimization and non-linear error functions, consequently allowing for a broader mathematical approach to model development. The input parameters evaluated represent soil and fluid properties: the uniformity coefficient (Cu), the coefficient of gradation (Cc), the capillary number (Nc), the bond number (Nb) and the total trapping number (Nt). Overall, the model that performed …
