Female Preference For Complex/Novel Signals In A Spider, Damian O. Elias, Eileen Hebets, Ronald R. Hoy Jun 2006

Female Preference For Complex/Novel Signals In A Spider, Damian O. Elias, Eileen Hebets, Ronald R. Hoy

Eileen Hebets Publications

Identifying the various factors that influence complex signal evolution is a difficult task, yet it is fundamental to understanding the evolution of animal communication. Here we explore the evolution of complex courtship signaling by taking advantage of a system in which sexual selection on male courtship traits has driven the diversification of geographically isolated populations of the jumping spider Habronattus pugillis Griswold. Using 2 populations (Santa Rita [SR] and Atascosa [AT]) in which SR females show xenophilic mating preferences for foreign (AT) over local males (SR), we examine the mechanisms driving this preference. Both AT and SR males produce multimodal …

A Hard Pill To Swallow- Does Schering V. Geneva Endanger Research And Development Within The Pharmaceutical Industry?, Alfredo De La Rosa

ExpressO

Recently the Federal Circuit has adopted a sweeping new rule of inherent anticipation that essentially bars the patenting of metabolites and other in vivo biological degradations of chemical compounds. The new rule, adopted in SCHERING v. GENEVA, could substantially affect both the willingness and ability of pharmaceutical companies to develop new drugs if they cannot be assured that patent protection will be available, regardless of whether the patented compound existed undiscovered in a prior art reference. This paper explores the evolution of the doctrine of inherent anticipation, the manner in which Federal Circuit has chosen to address the issue in …

Text, Context, And Reception History Of The Richard Dehmel Poems "Venus Mater" And "Wiegenlied" And Their Lieder Settings By Hans Pfitzner And Richard Strauss, Marie Ann Tavianini Jun 2006

Text, Context, And Reception History Of The Richard Dehmel Poems "Venus Mater" And "Wiegenlied" And Their Lieder Settings By Hans Pfitzner And Richard Strauss, Marie Ann Tavianini

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines the social and cultural circumstances surrounding the publication of the poems "Venus Mater" and "Wiegenlied" by the late nineteenth-century German poet Richard Dehmel, and the composition of the corresponding lieder by Hans Pfitzner and Richard Strauss. An accurate history of the publication and reception of Richard Dehmel's poetry has been difficult due to the existence of multiple similar versions of his poems. By referring back to the primary sources of his poetry, it is shown that "Venus Mater" and "Wiegenlied," although very similar, were discrete works published at different times in different anthologies of Dehmel's poems. Further …

Vocal Health Of Middle School And High School Choral Directors, Sandra M. Schwartz Jun 2006

Vocal Health Of Middle School And High School Choral Directors, Sandra M. Schwartz

Open Access Dissertations

Teachers are considered professional voice users because they depend on the regular and uninterrupted use of the voice. The nature of teaching requires more extensive use of the voice than other professions. Therefore, teachers are faced with a greater risk of developing voice problems. In addition to using the voice to present content to students, teachers must also manage the classroom and student behavior. All of these activities have potential to compromise vocal integrity. The purpose of this study was to examine the vocal health of selected middle school and high school choral directors. Specifically, it explored relationships between vocal …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided near-infrared spectral tomography was developed and used to image adipose and fibroglandular breast tissue of 11 normal female subjects, recruited under an institutional review board-approved protocol. Images of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water fraction, and subcellular scattering were reconstructed and show that fibroglandular fractions of both blood and water are higher than in adipose tissue. Variation in adipose and fibroglandular tissue composition between individuals was not significantly different across the scattered and dense breast categories. Combined MR and near-infrared tomography provides fundamental molecular information about these tissue types with resolution governed by MR T1 images.

Role Of Beat Noise In Limiting The Sensitivity Of Optical Coherence Tomography, Richard C. Haskell, David Liao, Adam E. Pivonka, Tera L. Bell, Brendan R. Haberle, Barbara M. Hoeling, Daniel C. Petersen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The sensitivity and dynamic range of optical coherence tomography (OCT) are calculated for instruments utilizing two common interferometer configurations and detection schemes. Previous researchers recognized that the performance of dual-balanced OCT instruments is severely limited by beat noise, which is generated by incoherent light backscattered from the sample. However, beat noise has been ignored in previous calculations of Michelson OCT performance. Our measurements of instrument noise confirm the presence of beat noise even in a simple Michelson interferometer configuration with a single photodetector. Including this noise, we calculate the dynamic range as a function of OCT light source power, and …

Enhancing Nurses' Autonomous Caring Practices In Ukrainian Villages Affected By Chornobyl, Lisa Prytula Jun 2006

Enhancing Nurses' Autonomous Caring Practices In Ukrainian Villages Affected By Chornobyl, Lisa Prytula

Theses and Graduate Projects

Twenty years after the Chornobyl nuclear disaster of 1986, the people living in villages affected by Chornobyl in northern Ukraine suffer from poor health status. Compounding the biophysical effects of latent exposure to ionizing radiation, socio-economic instability and psychological stress increase their suffering, The nurses that serve these villages depend on inaccessible physicians to guide them and lack basic medical supplies. The purpose of this transcultural nursing practice project is two-fold: (1)to strengthen nursing caring practices used by village nurses to serve a socially, economically, and environmentally disadvantaged population in Ukrainian villages surrounding Chornobyl; and (2) to enhance village nurses' …

Genetic And Maternal Determinants Of Effective Dispersal: The Effect Of Sire Genotype And Size At Birth In Side-Blotched Lizards, Barry Sinervo, Ryan Calsbeek, Tosha Comendant, Christiaan Both Jun 2006

Genetic And Maternal Determinants Of Effective Dispersal: The Effect Of Sire Genotype And Size At Birth In Side-Blotched Lizards, Barry Sinervo, Ryan Calsbeek, Tosha Comendant, Christiaan Both

Dartmouth Scholarship

We assessed genetic factors on progeny dispersal due to sire color morph genotypes in a field pedigree and lab crosses, and we measured maternal effects by studying both natural and experimentally induced egg size variation. Progeny were released into nature upon hatching, but we recorded dispersal distance at maturity, which reflects effective dispersal after viability selection has run its course. Progeny dispersal was significantly affected by sire genotype. Progeny from orange sires dispersed the farthest. Progeny from blue sires dispersed intermediate distances. Progeny from yellow sires were the most philopatric. Sire genotype effects interacted with egg size. In particular, enlarged …

Selective Parp-1 Targeting For Designing Chemo/Radio Sensitizing Agents, Marcos Oliveira Jun 2006

Selective Parp-1 Targeting For Designing Chemo/Radio Sensitizing Agents, Marcos Oliveira

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) is a central signaling enzyme in a cell nucleus. PARP-1 is a target for the development of radio and chemo sensitizing agents in cancer treatment as well as providing protection from stroke. An SH3 domain and an SH3 ligand domain have now been discovered on the PARP-1 protein. These domains are involved in PARP-1 activation. This discovery makes possible the use of bioinformatics tools for the design of new drugs and strategies for drug target selection, specifically targeting the PARP-1 enzyme.

Biochemical Basis Of Specialization For Dispersal Vs. Reproduction In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Morph-Specific Metabolism Of Amino Acids, Zhangwu Zhao, Anthony J. Zera Jun 2006

Biochemical Basis Of Specialization For Dispersal Vs. Reproduction In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Morph-Specific Metabolism Of Amino Acids, Zhangwu Zhao, Anthony J. Zera

Anthony Zera Publications

The biochemical basis of specializations for dispersal vs. reproduction is an understudied aspect of dispersal polymorphism in insects. Using a radiolabelled amino acid, we quantified differences in in vivo amino acid metabolism between morphs of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, that trade-off early age reproduction and dispersal capability. Studies were conducted in crickets fed a variety of diets expected to influence amino acid and lipid metabolism. On the day of molt to adulthood, prior to the morph-specific trade-off between ovarian growth and biochemical preparation for flight (e.g. biosynthesis of triglyceride flight fuel), morphs did not differ in any aspect of …

A Method To Increase The Power Of Multiple Testing Procedures Through Sample Splitting, Daniel Rubin, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jun 2006

A Method To Increase The Power Of Multiple Testing Procedures Through Sample Splitting, Daniel Rubin, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Consider the standard multiple testing problem where many hypotheses are to be tested, each hypothesis is associated with a test statistic, and large test statistics provide evidence against the null hypotheses. One proposal to provide probabilistic control of Type-I errors is the use of procedures ensuring that the expected number of false positives does not exceed a user-supplied threshold. Among such multiple testing procedures, we derive the ``most powerful'' method, meaning the test statistic cutoffs that maximize the expected number of true positives. Unfortunately, these optimal cutoffs depend on the true unknown data generating distribution, so could never be used …

Bi-Level Clustering Of Mixed Categorical And Numerical Biomedical Data, Bill Andreopoulos, Aijun An, Xiaogang Wang Jun 2006

Bi-Level Clustering Of Mixed Categorical And Numerical Biomedical Data, Bill Andreopoulos, Aijun An, Xiaogang Wang

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Biomedical data sets often have mixed categorical and numerical types, where the former represent semantic information on the objects and the latter represent experimental results. We present the BILCOM algorithm for |Bi-Level Clustering of Mixed categorical and numerical data types|. BILCOM performs a pseudo-Bayesian process, where the prior is categorical clustering. BILCOM partitions biomedical data sets of mixed types, such as hepatitis, thyroid disease and yeast gene expression data with Gene Ontology annotations, more accurately than if using one type alone.
