Hydrogen Isotopic Ratios Of Algal And Terrestrial Organic Matter In Lake Tulane, Florida: From A Modern Calibration To The Reconstruction Of Paleoclimatic And Paleohydrologic Conditions, Eric Charles Cross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent sedimentary records have indicated that climate in low latitude, continental environments have varied significantly throughout the mid to late Holocene. In subtropical North America, major climatic phenomena such as the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the Bermuda High have been shown to play a major role in this variability. Specifically, the northward migration of the ITCZ and the eastward position of the Bermuda High during summer months leads to warmer and wetter conditions over subtropical North America, and vice versa. A quantitative approach to understanding hydrologic dynamics (i.e. atmospheric circulation patterns, relative humidity) associated with these …

Mentoring Relationships: An Evaluation Of The Benefits That Female Mentors Receive From A Mentoring Relationship, Lori Toborg
Mentoring Relationships: An Evaluation Of The Benefits That Female Mentors Receive From A Mentoring Relationship, Lori Toborg
Theses and Graduate Projects
The term "mentor" is a commonplace word that refers to a relationship in which a senior individual with certain knowledge and expertise provides guidance and psychosocial support to a less-experienced individual. In today's world, mentoring is associated with both career and personal development. As more women fill top positions, organizations must understand the benefits of female mentors in business.
Although many researchers have examined the dynamics of the mentor-protege relationship, most research focuses on the benefits received by the protege. The benefit for mentors has gained attention recently, finally recognizing that mentoring relationships are reciprocal.
The purpose of this research …
Phylogeny Of The Parasitic Plant Family Orobanchaceae Inferred From Phytochrome A, Jonathan R. Bennett, Sarah Mathews
Phylogeny Of The Parasitic Plant Family Orobanchaceae Inferred From Phytochrome A, Jonathan R. Bennett, Sarah Mathews
Faculty Publications
Partial sequences of the nuclear gene encoding the photoreceptor phytochrome A (PHYA) are used to reconstruct relationships within Orobanchaceae, the largest of the parasitic angiosperm families. The monophyly of Orobanchaceae, including nonphotosynthetic holoparasites, hemiparasites, and nonparasitic Lindenbergia is strongly supported. Phytochrome A data resolve six well-supported lineages that contain all of the sampled genera except Brandisia, which is sister to the major radiation of hemiparasites. In contrast to previous plastid and ITS trees, relationships among these major clades also are generally well supported. Thus, the robust phylogenetic hypothesis inferred from the PHYA data provides a much better context in which …

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
In the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey traditional survey area (strata 1-18, 20-50, and 75-77), the total duck population estimate was 36.2 ± 0.6 [SE] million birds. This was 14% greater than last year’s estimate of 31.7 ± 0.6 million birds and 9% above the 1955-2005 long-term average. Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) abundance was 7.3 ± 0.2 million birds, which was similar to last year’s estimate of 6.8 ± 0.3 million birds and to the long-term average. Blue-winged teal (A. discors) abundance was 5.9 ± 0.3 million birds. This value was 28% greater than last year’s …
Characteristics Of Staff–Patient Interactions On A Behavioral Treatment Unit For Patients With Serious Mental Illness, And The Effects Of A Behavior Management Training Program On Staff Performance, Lindsay S. Schenkel
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Despite the existence of effective psychological interventions for people diagnosed with schizophrenia, these continue to be underutilized. This problem is most critical in the case of so called “treatment-refractory” patients, where, paradoxically, effective interventions with among the strongest evidence base in psychiatry exist – namely – inpatient social-learning-based rehabilitation programs. Barriers to implementation and effective maintenance of such programs include a low frequency of staff-patient interactions and a relatively high frequency of non-therapeutic staff behaviors, lack of staff training and background in behavioral treatment, negative attitudes towards behavioral interventions, and tension between professional disciplines. This study examined the nature and …

Jurisdictional Fact, Kevin M. Clermont
Jurisdictional Fact, Kevin M. Clermont
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
What kind of factual showing must the plaintiff make in order to establish, say, personal jurisdiction? While that question may seem simple enough, real difficulties in regard to the standard of proof arise when there is a similarity of the facts entailed in the jurisdictional determination and those on the merits. Surely, the plaintiff has to do more than allege that the defendant is the author of state-directed acts or omissions. Yet, almost as surely, the plaintiff should not have to prove the cause of action in order to establish jurisdiction. The plaintiff thus must have to show something between …

Team-based learning (TBL) is a well-defined instructional strategy that allows a single instructor to teach by conducting multiple small groups simultaneously in the same classroom. Learners actively participate in and out of class as they move through three phases: independent study assignments, readiness assurance testing, and group activities that force them to put knowledge into practice. Students prepare in advance by reading an assigned article. Class time is shifted away from learning facts and toward application and integration of information. The instructor retains control of content and acts as both facilitator and content expert. This TBL program is designed to …

Motivation: The development of methods for linking gene expressions to various clinical and phenotypic characteristics is an active area of genomic research. Scientists hope that such analysis may, for example, describe relationships between gene function and clinical events such as death or recovery. Methods are available for relating gene expression to measurements that are categorized or continuous, but there is less work in relating expressions to an observed event time such as time to death, response, or relapse. When gene expressions are measured over time, there are methods for differentiating temporal patterns. However, no methods have yet been proposed for …

Obesity, Physical Activity, And Mortality In A Prospective Chinese Elderly Cohort, Mary Schooling, Tai Hing Lam, Zhi Bin Li, Sai Yin Ho, Wai Man Chan, Kin Sang Ho, May Ked Tham, Benjamin J. Cowling, Gabriel M. Leung
Publications and Research
Background
In older people, it is unclear whether obesity relates to mortality, which calls into question its etiologic role in disease and its public health relevance. This apparent lack of relationship in older people could be an artifactual result of their diverse health states.
Methods
We used Cox regression analysis to determine whether the effect of body mass index (BMI) (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) or physical activity on mortality varied with health status in a prospective cohort study of Chinese people 65 years or older enrolled from 1998 to 2000 at …

Theses and Dissertations
Objective: To examine the parenting skills and attitudes of substance abusing mothers in a comprehensive drug treatment facility in Camden, NJ. Methods: Giving three self-report measures and urine analysis to 14 mothers at intake, 2-months, and 6-months. Participants were reimbursed for their time and travel. Results: Mothers parenting skills and attitudes at intake were found to lack the confidence and enjoyment in their parenting and to have high levels of perceived stress. Bigger sample sizes are needed. Discussion: Progress towards incorporating parenting skills training in in-patient and out-patient treatment facilities has been made. However, a distinction between bad parenting and …

White-Tailed Deer Spotlight Survey Trends On Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, 1989-2005, Donald Althoff, Philip Gibson, Gary Meggers, David Hilley, Jim Sellers
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Legal harvest of deer has never been allowed on Quivira National Wildlife Refuge (QNWR) in south central Kansas; however, it is permitted on lands adjacent to the refuge. We assessed whether the rifle season for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) caused increased use of QNWR between 1989 and 2005. Deer spotlight surveys were conducted pre-rifle, rifle, and post-rifle seasons from 1989-2005. Total count, buck count, buck:doe ratio, fawns per doe, and percentage of does with twins were computed for each survey conducted. The average of the last 4 years (2002-2005) of the pre-rifle season surveys was 4.5 times greater …

United States National Park Service: Publications
The black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), a keystone prairie species, historically occupied over 404,700 ha (100 million ac) of short- and mixed-grass prairie. Today, they occupy less than 2% of their original range. Scotts Bluff National Monument, Nebraska is one of eight National Park Service units with one or more black-tailed prairie dog colonies. Since 1995, a total of 202 observations were made on the population of the main colony at Scotts Bluff National Monument, to estimate annual densities and abundances. Estimated annual densities ranged between 9.2 and 53.0 individuals/ha (2.5 ac). Average density of prairies dogs was …

Are Patented Research Tools Still Valuable? Use, Intent, And A Rebuttable Presumption: A Proposed Modification For Analyzing The Exemption From Patent Infringement Under 35 Usc 271 (E) (1), Vihar R. Patel
ExpressO
Briefly, the article proposes to have courts focus on the nature of an individual's use and apply the "UART" (Use As a Research Tool) factors to determine if a patented invention is being used as a research tool. If a patented invention is being used as a research tool, then the court is to presume that the activities are not covered by the FDA exemption. However, this presumption can be rebutted by a researcher's demonstration of the research tool owner using his patent to block efforts to develop a competing product. If the presumption is rebutted, then the court applies …
Priors That Do Not Rule Out Strategic Uncertainty Cannot Lead To Nash Equilibrium, Eduardo Zambrano
Priors That Do Not Rule Out Strategic Uncertainty Cannot Lead To Nash Equilibrium, Eduardo Zambrano
Economics
Consider a two player game that is to be played once. The players receive information that they use to help them predict the choices made by each other. A decision rule for each player captures how each player uses the information received in making their choices. Priors in this context are probability distributions over the information that may be received and over the decision rules that their opponents may use. I investigate the existence of prior beliefs for each player that satisfy the following properties: (R) they do not rule out their opponent using a rational decision rule, (K) they …
Case Study Of A Middle School Reader Attending A Separate Reading Class, Amy A. Wilson
Case Study Of A Middle School Reader Attending A Separate Reading Class, Amy A. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the prevalence of separate reading classes in middle-level schools across the country, there is much debate about the effectiveness of these courses. Many researchers advocate content-area literacy or interdisciplinary teaming instead, claiming that students do not transfer the skills they learn in reading classes to other subjects. This qualitative case study of one middle school student is an intensive description of a biracial Navajo and Piute teenager who attended a separate reading class. The case study looked at three specific areas of the student's reading in regards to this class: comprehension, motivation, and perception. The student did not transfer …

Comparison Of Protein Active Site Structures For Functional Annotation Of Proteins And Drug Design, Robert Powers, Jennifer C. Copeland, Katherine Germer, Kelly A. Mercier, Viswanathan Ramanathan, Peter Revesz
Robert Powers Publications
Rapid and accurate functional assignment of novel proteins is increasing in importance, given the completion of numerous genome sequencing projects and the vastly expanding list of unannotated proteins. Traditionally, global primary-sequence and structure comparisons have been used to determine putative function. These approaches, however, do not emphasize similarities in active site configurations that are fundamental to a protein’s activity and highly conserved relative to the global and more variable structural features. The Comparison of Protein Active Site Structures (CPASS) database and software enable the comparison of experimentally identified ligand-binding sites to infer biological function and aid in drug discovery. The …

Blanding’S Turtle (Emydoidea Blandingii): A Technical Conservation Assessment, Justin D. Congdon, Douglas A. Keinath
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Blanding’s turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) are secure in Nebraska, and they range from being vulnerable to threatened, or endangered throughout most of the rest of their distribution. In Region 2, they have not been reported from Kansas, they are extremely rare in South Dakota, and they occupy wetlands in the northern half of Nebraska. The largest population known within the range of Blanding’s turtles is at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, Nebraska.
The core habitat of Blanding’s turtles has an aquatic component that consists of a permanent wetland and a suite of other, usually smaller and more temporary, wetlands such …
