The Relationship Between Fine Arts Participation And The Emotional Intelligence Of Fifth-Grade Elementary Students, Susan Jean Clark Jul 2006

The Relationship Between Fine Arts Participation And The Emotional Intelligence Of Fifth-Grade Elementary Students, Susan Jean Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Although attempts have been made to justify fine arts education in elementary schools on the basis of various educational and social benefits, the greatest benefit may lie in arts participation's impact on the child's emotional intelligence. A review of published literature related to emotional learning, emotional intelligence, and the benefits of fine arts participation in the elementary school is presented. The resulting synthesis serves as a theoretical framework for the view that emotional learning and expression should be integral components of a child's education and that participation in the arts provides a viable means to that end. A study was …

Identification, Sequencing, Expression And Evolutionary Relationships Of The 11s Seed Storage Protein Gene In Chenopodium Quinoa Willd., Marie Renee Barrett Balzotti

Theses and Dissertations

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is an Andean crop adapted to harsh environmental conditions and containing a high and well-balanced protein composition. Two seed storage proteins, the 2S albumin and 11S globulin, are the major amino acid reservoirs for the developing seedling. An in-depth study of the genes encoding these proteins is necessary to understand the source of quinoa's protein quality. Our objectives include identification and sequencing of the 11S genomic and cDNA clones, analysis of 11S expression profiles in different quinoa accessions and evaluation of evolutionary relationships between the sequence of the 11S gene in quinoa and homologous genes in other …

An Economic-Engineering Optimization For The Binational Mexico-U.S. Lower Colorado River Delta: The Mexicali Valley Case Study, Josue Medellin-Azuara, Jay R. Lund Jul 2006

An Economic-Engineering Optimization For The Binational Mexico-U.S. Lower Colorado River Delta: The Mexicali Valley Case Study, Josue Medellin-Azuara, Jay R. Lund

2006

Agricultural water use in the binational Lower Colorado River Basin is about ninety percent of all the beneficial use. Fast growing border cities of Baja California and conservation uses will increase their water allocations in the near future. The CALVIN economic-engineering model was used to evaluate the benefits and costs of a variety of water management strategies in the Lower Colorado River Delta in Mexico. Results show that at 2025 water demand conditions, agriculture seems to be the most suitable donor of water to other sectors. Wastewater reuse for irrigation and/or conservation purposes may reduce dependence on agricultural water imports …

A New Approach To Riparian Area Education In Arizona, George Zaimes Et Al. Jul 2006

A New Approach To Riparian Area Education In Arizona, George Zaimes Et Al.

2006

Riparian areas are called “ribbons of life” since they are considered the most productive habitats in North America (Johnson et al. 1977; Chaney et al. 1990). In the arid western United States, riparian areas comprise less than 2% of the total land (Ffolliott et al. 2004). Despite their small area, Patten (1998) says that the role of riparian areas is disproportionate to their size, particularly in the semi-arid regions of North America. This is mainly due to the many functions and values of riparian areas. These functions and values are due to greater water availability relative to the adjacent terrestrial …

Accumulation Of Phycotoxins In The Mussel Mytilus Galloprovincialis From The Central Adriatic Sea, Maja Pavela-Vrančić, Ivana Ujević, Živana Ninčević Gladan, Ambrose Furey

Physical Sciences Publications

Surveys of DSP (Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning) toxin profiles in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from coastal waters of the central Adriatic Sea, over the years 1995 to 2001, demonstrate that incidents of shellfish toxicity in this area are dominated by the occurrence of okadaic acid (OA) and a PTX derivative, 7-epi-pectenotoxin-2-seco acid (7-epi-PTX-2SA). Toxin composition and the relative ratio of toxic components in shellfish is in correlation with the occurrence of DSP producing organisms from the Dinophysis species along with Prorocentrum micans and Lingulodinium polyedrum. The occurrence of D. sacculus shortly before the appearance of OA in shellfish implicates its possible …

Modeling The Mechanical Effects Of Liquid Mediated Adhesion Between The Human Vocal Folds, Gifford Zach Decker Jul 2006

Modeling The Mechanical Effects Of Liquid Mediated Adhesion Between The Human Vocal Folds, Gifford Zach Decker

Theses and Dissertations

The vocal folds are a complex self-oscillating biological system. In the current research, an equation was developed to model viscous adhesion forces that occur when the collision of the vocal folds results in the formation of a liquid bridge. The adhesion equation was validated using experimental data, and simplified to a one-dimensional approximation with an included correction factor that adjusted the predicted pressure in situations where the one-dimensional approximation was invalid. A non-oscillating vocal fold model with a modeled liquid bridge was used to study stress resulting from viscous adhesion. The vertical normal stress magnitude ranged from about 80 to …

Comparative Efficiency Of Six Stable Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Traps, David B. Taylor, Dennis Berkebile

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Five adhesive traps and the Nzi cloth-target trap were compared to determine their trapping efficiency and biases for stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae). Two configurations of the BiteFree prototype trap, constructed of polyethylene terephthalate, were most efficient for trapping stable flies, whereas the EZ trap was least efficient. The two Alsynite traps, Broce and Olson, were intermediate to the BiteFree prototype and EZ traps. All adhesive traps collected a ratio of approximately two males for each female. Approximately 50% of the flies collected on the adhesive traps, both male and female, were blood fed, and 20% were vitellogenic. …

Comparative Morphology Of The Female Genitalia And Some Abdominal Structures Of Neotropical Cryptocephalini (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cryptocephalinae), M. Lourdes Chamorro-Lacayo, Alexander S. Konstantinov, Alexey G. Moseyko

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The female genitalia of New World Cryptocephalini was studied and illustrated based on representatives of 11 of the 13 genera of the tribe. It was found that female genitalia contain pleurites IX, a rare and apparently primitive feature among leaf beetles. In other features cryptocephaline female genitalia are simpler than genitalia of other leaf beetles in having a poorly sclerotized sternite VIII and lacking the tignum. It is also hypothesized that the vagina is formed by sternites IX (dorsally) and VIII (ventrally), and that sclerotized plate of sternite IX can be homologized with vaginal palpi of flea beetles. A set …

Forgetting Freud: The Courts' Fear Of The Subconscious In Date Rape (And Other) Criminal Cases, Andrew E. Taslitz Jul 2006

Forgetting Freud: The Courts' Fear Of The Subconscious In Date Rape (And Other) Criminal Cases, Andrew E. Taslitz

ExpressO

Courts too often show a reluctance to learn the lessons taught by social science in criminal cases, especially where subconcious processes are involved. The subconscious is seen as rarely relevant and, in the unusual cases where it is relevant, it is viewed as a disease commandeering the conscious mind and thus helping to exculpate the accused. Drawing on the example of forensic linguistics in date rape cases as illustrative of a broader phenomenon, this article argues that the courts' misuse of social science stems from fear and misunderstanding of the workings of the subconscious mind. Accordingly, the piece contrasts the …

Salinization Of A Desert Reservoir? Inflows, Solutes, And Mixing In Lake Amistad, Alan W. Groeger Et Al. Jul 2006

Salinization Of A Desert Reservoir? Inflows, Solutes, And Mixing In Lake Amistad, Alan W. Groeger Et Al.

2006

Three rivers of very different physical and chemical nature (the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo, Pecos, and Devils) flow into the international reservoir Lake Amistad. This reservoir is a very valuable water supply for downstream and local agricultural and domestic interests, and has a huge upstream drainage (323,643 km2), which includes rivers draining both the western and eastern slopes of the southern Rockies, and a large proportion of the Chihuahuan Desert, including the Rio Conchos in Mexico. In 2004 a great deal of the volume of the reservoir, which had decreased dramatically since 1994 during an extended drought, has been recovered through …

An Examination Of The Legal Issues In Municipal Water Reuse, Ronald A. Kaiser Jul 2006

An Examination Of The Legal Issues In Municipal Water Reuse, Ronald A. Kaiser

2006

Fiscal, physical, environmental and political consideration have severally restricted building new reservoirs to meet municipal water needs in Texas and throughout the American west. Water management is transitioning from an era of reservoir construction to one of more intensive management through conservation, reallocation, desalination, rainwater harvesting, aquifer storage and recovery and reusing treated effluent as means of meeting water supply needs. As opportunities for conventional water supply development dwindle and costs for wastewater treatment and disposal climb, the role water reuse plays in water resource management increases significantly. Both nonpotable and potable applications of reclaimed water offer a means to …

An Update On The Tamu Interdisciplinary Graduate Water Degree, Valeen Silvy, Ronald A. Kaiser

2006

Water is a keystone natural resources in Texas required to sustain human life, a viable economy and a livable environment. Over the past 50 years, population growth and shifts, economic development, technologic innovation and changing political systems have intensified competition for Texas water resources necessitating a greater emphasis on the integrative and adaptive management. In response to this challenge Texas A&M University instituted in 2005 an interdisciplinary graduate degree program in water management and hydrologic sciences. The following outlines the curriculum, administrative structure, current and projected student enrollment for the program.

Biogeography Of Buarremon Brush-Finches (Aves, Emberizinae): Integrating Ecology, Evolution, And Systematics, Carlos Daniel Cadena Jul 2006

Biogeography Of Buarremon Brush-Finches (Aves, Emberizinae): Integrating Ecology, Evolution, And Systematics, Carlos Daniel Cadena

Dissertations

Ecological and historical approaches to studying species¿ geographic ranges have yet to be unified. Ideal scenarios for integrating ecology with evolutionary biology in biogeography are those where contemporary ecological interactions may have influenced species¿ distributions historically, driving the evolution of ecological niches. I focused on understanding the origin of elevational distributions of species, and specifically on the role of interspecific competition in the origin of complementary elevational ranges. To test hypotheses about the origin of elevational distributions, I followed a combined approach involving molecular phylogenetics, phylogeography, population genetics, and ecological niche modeling. I focused on Buarremon torquatus and B. brunneinucha …

Fdr And Bayesian Multiple Comparisons Rules, Peter Muller, Giovanni Parmigiani, Kenneth Rice Jul 2006

Fdr And Bayesian Multiple Comparisons Rules, Peter Muller, Giovanni Parmigiani, Kenneth Rice

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We discuss Bayesian approaches to multiple comparison problems, using a decision theoretic perspective to critically compare competing approaches. We set up decision problems that lead to the use of FDR-based rules and generalizations. Alternative definitions of the probability model and the utility function lead to different rules and problem-specific adjustments. Using a loss function that controls realized FDR we derive an optimal Bayes rule that is a variation of the Benjamini and Hochberg (1995) procedure. The cutoff is based on increments in ordered posterior probabilities instead of ordered p- values. Throughout the discussion we take a Bayesian perspective. In particular, …
