The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner Regarding The Promotion Of Health In Childhood Obesity, Joanna R. Mccollum
The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner Regarding The Promotion Of Health In Childhood Obesity, Joanna R. Mccollum
MSN Research Projects
Childhood obesity is a condition that is growing in epidemic proportions in the United States (U.S.). The prevalence of childhood obesity has doubled since the 1980’s. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2002), stated that approximately 55 % o f the U.S. population is overweight. According to Moran (1999), preventing childhood obesity significantly decreases morbidity related to type II diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, hyperuricemia, and other chronic conditions. The purpose o f this Evidence Based Practice (EBP) project was to develop a nurse practitioner knowledgebase regarding health promotion in childhood obesity. The research questions asked: (a) What is the level o …
The Role Of The Nurse Pracitioner In End Of Life Care, Caryn Alison Johnson
The Role Of The Nurse Pracitioner In End Of Life Care, Caryn Alison Johnson
MSN Research Projects
Although advances in medical technology have increased the average lifespan of the elderly population, many patients do not receive assistance at the end of life, and suffer with avoidable pain and distress. Practitioners and researchers have identified the need for further research to improve the quality of EOLC. Research shows that the NP may be the best choice of hospital staff to initiate EOLC discussions and decisions with patients and their families. For this reason, it is likely that the role of the NP in EOLC will expand to a specialty focus in the near future. Therefore, the purpose of …
Quality Of Life In Men With Prostate Cancer, Pamela Lott Baird
Quality Of Life In Men With Prostate Cancer, Pamela Lott Baird
MSN Research Projects
The diagnosis of prostate cancer is extremely serious and overwhelming for men of any gender, age, or socioeconomic class. Unfortunately, many patients are left to deal with the ramifications of the illness with little information or coping mechanisms. Perhaps prostate cancer could be dealt with in a more productive and positive manner if patients had opportunities to vocalize feelings and ask pertinent and relevant questions of healthcare providers without feeling embarrassed or ashamed. Clearly, quality of life is changed in many ways by this serious and often lethal illness. According to Willener & Hantikainen, the illness is quite prevalent: Prostate …
Evidence-Based Practice Considerations For The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In Promoting Resilience, Amanda M. Weeks
Evidence-Based Practice Considerations For The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In Promoting Resilience, Amanda M. Weeks
MSN Research Projects
The importance o f resilience as a concept is clearly defined throughout the lifespan. Therefore it is very important to understand the responsibility o f nurse practitioners in promoting resilience. Resilience is affected by assessment, diagnosis, education, and health promotion given from all healthcare providers. McAllister (2003), states that “whilst a problem focus is criticized by some, it remains largely unchallenged as the guiding light for nursing practice” (p.l). She goes on to state that “by refocusing on a solution focused approach, we could show how we are different from medicine, and how we aim to do nursing differently through …
Autonomy As It Relates To The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner, James A. Ray
Autonomy As It Relates To The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner, James A. Ray
MSN Research Projects
The quintessential issue of nurse practitioner practice is the establishment of autonomy. The intention o f the pioneers o f nursing was to build on existing nursing autonomy and significantly expand it to accommodate the new role (Brown & Draye, 2003). While it is true nurse practitioners enjoy a limited amount of practice autonomy today, true autonomy cannot be achieved until the stigmata of collaborating physician is removed as a requirement for practice. The purpose o f this integrative literature review was to investigate the level of knowledge regarding nurse practitioner coping with role transition. The current level o f …

Waters Of The United States: Theory, Practice And Integrity At The Supreme Court, Jamison E. Colburn
Waters Of The United States: Theory, Practice And Integrity At The Supreme Court, Jamison E. Colburn
ExpressO
In the Supreme Court's two wetlands cases this Term, a question of statutory interpretation divided the justices sharply, in part because so much rides on the particular statutory provision at issue. The provision, a cryptic definition within the Clean Water Act (CWA), has now provided three separate occasions at the Court where the justices have confronted (1) the Chevron doctrine and the Court’s own ambivalence toward it, and (2) the CWA's enormous project of restoring the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation's waters. In this essay, I argue that the way the Court went about resolving its differences …

Oyster Reef Restoration Project For The City Of Dover, Grizzle, Raymond E. Grizzle, Jennifer Greene, Holly Abeels
PREP Reports & Publications
This project was conducted as a contract between the City of Dover and the University of New Hampshire, with additional funding supplied by the New Hampshire Estuaries Project. The overall goal was to restore as much bottom area as possible (with available funds) of formerly productive oyster bottom in two areas, the Bellamy River and Pomeroy Cove (Piscataqua River). The restored areas were intended as a contribution to the long-term NHEP goal of restoring 20 acres of oyster bottom by 2010 (Trowbridge 2003). Five objectives were addressed: (1) site surveys, map production, and final restoration protocol development; (2) remote setting …

Absence Of The Psbq Protein Results In Destabilization Of The Psbv Protein And Decreased Oxygen Evolution Activity In Cyanobacterial Photosystem Ii, Yasuhiro Kashino, Natsuko Inoue-Kashino, Johnna L. Roose, Himadri B. Pakrasi
Faculty Publications
We have previously reported that cyanobacterial photosystem II (PS II) contains a protein homologous to PsbQ, the extrinsic 17-kDa protein found in higher plant and green algal PS II (Kashino, Y., Lauber, W. M., Carroll, J. A., Wang, Q., Whitmarsh, J., Satoh, K., and Pakrasi, H. B. (2002) Biochemistry 41, 8004-8012) and that it has regulatory role(s) on the water oxidation machinery (Thornton, L. E., Ohkawa, H., Roose, J. L., Kashino, Y., Keren, N., and Pakrasi, H. B. (2004) Plant Cell 16, 2164-2175). In this work, the localization and the function of PsbQ were assessed using the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. …

Circadian Rhythmicity By Autocatalysis, Arun Mehra, Christian I. Hong, Mi Shi, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap, Peter Ruoff
Dartmouth Scholarship
The temperature compensated in vitro oscillation of cyanobacterial KaiC phosphorylation, the first example of a thermodynamically closed system showing circadian rhythmicity, only involves the three Kai proteins (KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC) and ATP. In this paper, we describe a model in which the KaiA- and KaiB-assisted autocatalytic phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of KaiC are the source for circadian rhythmicity. This model, based upon autocatalysis instead of transcription-translation negative feedback, shows temperature-compensated circadian limit-cycle oscillations with KaiC phosphorylation profiles and has period lengths and rate constant values that are consistent with experimental observations.

PREP Reports & Publications
Five classes in a local elementary school participated in an effort to grow and plant high marsh and upper border vegetation at a salt marsh restoration site in spring 2005. Seeds of six marsh upper edge species were successfully germinated and grown into seedlings by third graders. The seedlings were planted by the students in late spring 2005, but only switchgrass and quackgrass plants appeared to have established and survived after one year. Mature shoots of three high marsh species planted by the third graders (salt hay, salt grass and black grass) established successfully and continue to proliferate. In addition, …

Photoreductive Dissolution Of Ferrihydrite By Methanesulfinic Acid: Evidence Of A Direct Link Between Dimethylsulfide And Iron-Bioavailability, Anne M. Johansen, Jennifer M. Key
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Within open‐ocean regions where excess macronutrients are present, phytoplankton growth is limited by the bioavailability of iron supplied to these areas primarily within atmospheric aerosols of crustal origin. However, processes that control the abundance of biologically accessible iron in these aerosols are largely unknown. Here we show that dissolution of ferrihydrite, a surrogate iron(oxy)hydroxide phase found in atmospheric waters, is enhanced in the presence of methanesulfinic acid (MSIA, CH3SO2H, a dimethylsulfide (DMS) oxidation intermediate) in laboratory irradiation experiments with aqueous suspensions that simulate marine aerosol particles. The increased release of soluble Fe(II) is attributed to a …

Classification Of Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Rat Ca1 Hippocampal Interneuron Subpopulations Defined By Calcium-Binding Protein Mrna Expression, Richard M. Burgon
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the single-cell relative quantitative mRNA expression of three Calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs; calbindin, calretinin, parvalbumin) and eight nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subunits (alpha2-alpha5, alpha7, beta2-beta4) from interneurons from the stratum radiatum or stratum oriens within the CA1 region of rat hippocampi was analyzed using quantitative real time RT-PCR. Eighty-seven percent of the interneurons examined expressed CaBP mRNA. Parvalbumin mRNA was detected in 64%, while calbindin and calretinin expression was detected in 26% and 40% of interneurons, respectively. CaBP expression was not exclusive; the average number of CaBP mRNA detected per interneuron of the 47 interneurons examined for CaBP …
Using A General Indexing Paradigm To Monitor Rodent Populations, Richard M. Engeman, Desley Whisson
Using A General Indexing Paradigm To Monitor Rodent Populations, Richard M. Engeman, Desley Whisson
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Population monitoring is a valuable component to managing invasive rodent populations. Indices can be efficient methods for monitoring rodent populations, as more labor-intensive density estimation procedures often are impractical or invalid to apply. Many monitoring objectives can be couched in an indexing framework. Indexing procedures obtain maximal utility if they exhibit key characteristics, including being practical to apply, being sensitive to population changes or differences in the target species, having an inherent variance formula to estimate precision of index values, and relying on as few assumptions as possible. Here, a general indexing paradigm that promotes the characteristics that make indices …
Why It Is Time To Eliminate Genomic Patents, Together With Natural Extracts Doctrine That Have Supported Such Patents, Allen K. Yu
Why It Is Time To Eliminate Genomic Patents, Together With Natural Extracts Doctrine That Have Supported Such Patents, Allen K. Yu
ExpressO
The constitutional purpose of intellectual property is to “promote the progress of science and useful arts.” Given the utilitarian basis of patents, it is critical that policies and laws must be continually adjusted to reflect the needs of new technologies. When the law tries to shield itself from rather than confront the realities of underlying technologies, patents end up actually subverting rather than promote technological progress. This paper explores why the natural extracts doctrine belongs to the class of doctrines that subvert progress. The doctrine, established over a century ago to enable the patenting of purified compounds for use as …

Supervised Detection Of Conserved Motifs In Dna Sequences With Cosmo, Oliver Bembom, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A number of computational methods have been proposed for identifying transcription factor binding sites from a set of unaligned sequences that are thought to share the motif in question. We here introduce an algorithm, called cosmo, that allows this search to be supervised by specifying a set of constraints that the position weight matrix of the unknown motif must satisfy. Such constraints may be formulated, for example, on the basis of prior knowledge about the structure of the transcription factor in question. The algorithm is based on the same two-component multinomial mixture model used by MEME, with stronger reliance, however, …
Predicted Responses Of Small Mammals To Reintroduction Of Fire Along A Northern Prairie River Valley, Aren Eddingsaas, Robert Murphy, Patrick Isakson, Keith Behrend
Predicted Responses Of Small Mammals To Reintroduction Of Fire Along A Northern Prairie River Valley, Aren Eddingsaas, Robert Murphy, Patrick Isakson, Keith Behrend
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Fire is being reintroduced to restore native mixed-grass prairie that has been invaded by woody vegetation and introduced species of grasses at 8000-ha (20,000-ac) Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in northwestern North Dakota. Implications of this management for much of the local fauna are merely speculative without basic inventory data. We measured the occurrence and habitat relationships of small mammals (< 450 g [< 1 lb]) in prairie and woodland on the refuge. Using snaptraps, we captured 7 mammal species on 42 75-m (245-ft) radius plots in prairie during summer 1998 (n = 193 individuals in 5,208 trap-nights) and 5 species on 32 11-m (36-ft) radius plots in woodland during summer 2000 (n = 289 individuals in 2,560 trap-nights). We found 13-lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) and western jumping mouse (Zapus princeps) almost exclusively in open prairie and southern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi) almost exclusively in woodland. Based on logistic regression analysis, occurrence of 13-lined ground squirrel …

Long-Term Abundance Of Breeding Songbirds During Restoration Of Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie, Robert Murphy, Karen Smith
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
There are no published, long-term accounts of responses of grassland passerine birds to the restoration of northern mixed-grass prairie through combined use of fire and grazing. During 1979-2001, we assessed abundance of passerine birds (9 grassland species and 1 shrub-associate species) on 2 brush-invaded, mixed-grass prairie tracts at Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern North Dakota. Each tract encompassed 90 ha (220 ac) that were being restored through 4 prescribed fires then 3 consecutive years of grazing by cattle. Fires were separated by 2-4 years of rest (i.e., nondisturbance) and grazing was initiated 2 years after the last fire. Among …

Eliding In New York, Monte Neil Stewart
Eliding In New York, Monte Neil Stewart
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar
In January 2006, this Journal published an article that set forth the social institutional argument for man/woman marriage, demonstrated how that argument is a sufficient response to all constitutional attacks leveled at the laws sustaining that social institution, and detailed how the courts mandating genderless marriage (and the dissenting judges favoring that result) had elided the argument (“the Judicial Elision article”). Since the Judicial Elision article’s early December 2005 cut-off date, two more instances of judicial elision of social institutional realities have cropped up in New York. Both are dissenting opinions, one in the Appellate Division and one in the …

Predicting Maize Yield, Nutrient Concentration And Uptake In P And K Fertilized Soils: Pressurized Hot Water And Other Alternatives To Mehlich I Extraction In Guatemala Soils, Heather Mae Hunsaker
Theses and Dissertations
The inaccessibility and cost of soil testing reduce effectiveness of fertilizer use on small-scale subsistence farms, and inadequate funding promotes adoption of soil tests in developing countries with minimal validation. For example, Mehlich-I extraction of phosphorus (P) currently used extensively in Guatemala may not be suitable for its broad range of soils. At least four alternatives are available but are relatively untested [Bray 1, Mehlich III, Olsen and pressurized hot water (PHW)]. Pressurized hot water is relatively simple and inexpensive, but is not yet tested against other extraction methods under variable P or potassium (K) fertilization levels. To determine whether …
Structure-Activity Studies Of Glycosphingolipids As Antigens Of Natural Killer T Cells, Randal Donald Goff
Structure-Activity Studies Of Glycosphingolipids As Antigens Of Natural Killer T Cells, Randal Donald Goff
Theses and Dissertations
Glycosphingolipids (GSLs), composed of a polar saccharide head and a lipophilic ceramide tail, are ubiquitous components of the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells. They serve in many regulatory capacities and have antigenic properties towards natural killer T (NKT) cells of the innate immune system. Critical to the recognition of glycosylceramides by NKT cells are antigen presenting cells (APC), such as dendritic cells, which are responsible for binding, processing, and delivery of ligands to these lymphocytes. This event is mediated by CD1d, a major histocompatibility complex-like protein expressed on the surface of APCs, which binds GSL antigens by the ceramide moiety …
