Sumoylation Of The Budding Yeast Kinetochore Protein Ndc10 Is Required For Ndc10 Spindle Localization And Regulation Of Anaphase Spindle Elongation, Ben Montpetit, Tony R. Hazbun, Stanley Fields, Philip Hieter

Posttranslational modification by the ubiquitin-like protein SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) is emerging as an important regulator in many cellular processes, including genome integrity. In this study, we show that the kinetochore proteins Ndc10, Bir1, Ndc80, and Cep3, which mediate the attachment of chromosomes to spindle microtubules, are sumoylated substrates in budding yeast. Furthermore, we show that Ndc10, Bir1, and Cep3 but not Ndc80 are desumoylated upon exposure to nocodazole, highlighting the possibility of distinct roles for sumoylation in modulating kinetochore protein function and of a potential link between the sumoylation of kinetochore proteins and mitotic checkpoint function. In September 1999, Robin Lovitt was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a pool hall manager in Arlington, Virginia. The DNA evidence that was a key part of the government’s case was presented in a misleading and unfair manner. In this case study, we first examine the way in which DNA evidence was misused. We then discuss the failure of the legal system at all levels to recognize and remedy this problem. Low-Frequency Ultrasound Increases Outer Membrane Permeability Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Christopher M. Runyan, John C. Carmen, Benjamin L. Beckstead, Jared L. Nelson, Richard A. Robison, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

Low-frequency ultrasound has been investigated as an adjuvant to antimicrobial therapy, targeted at both planktonic and biofilm (sessile) organisms. Our previous work showed that ultrasound (US) effectively enhances the bactericidal activity of certain antibiotics against planktonic cultures (Pitt et al., 1994; Rediske et al., 1999) and in vitro biofilms (Johnson et al., 1998; Qian et al., 1999) and in vivo biofilms (Carmen et al., 2004b, 2005; Rediske et al., 2000) of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Ultrasound was shown to increase the transport of antibiotics through biofilms (Carmen et al., 2004a) which could account for some (or all) of the enhanced …

Upwards of $50 billion in capital needs go unmet each year in Indian Country in such vital sectors as infrastructure, community facilities, housing, and enterprise development, in part due to the restrictions imposed on tribal access to the capital markets, specifically the ability of tribal governments to issue tax-exempt debt. Section 7871 of the Internal Revenue Code requires tribal tax-free bond proceeds to be used only for “essential governmental functions,” a restriction not applicable to state and municipal bonds, and Section 7871(e) further limits the scope of available tax-exempt bonding to activities “customarily performed by State and local governments with …

We propose, develop and implement the simulation extrapolation (SIMEX) methodology for Cox regression models when the log hazard function is linear in the model parameters but nonlinear in the variables measured with error (LPNE). The class of LPNE functions contains but is not limited to strata indicators, splines, quadratic and interaction terms. The first order bias correction method proposed here has the advantage that it remains computationally feasible even when the number of observations is very large and multiple models need to be explored. Theoretical and simulation results show that the SIMEX method outperforms the naive method even with small …
