Magnetic nanoparticles were used to support an ATRP catalyst for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) for minimized adverse effect of catalyst support and easy catalyst separation. the nanoparticle-supported catalyst mediated a living/controlled radical polymerization of MMA as effectively as unsupported catalysts. with the addition of 22 mol % of CuBr 2, the polymer molecular weights were well-controlled with an initiator efficiency of 0.85 and polydispersity lower than 1.2. the supported catalysts could be easily separated/isolated using an external magnetic field and reused with slightly decreased activity but further improved control. the activity of the recycled catalyst was regenerated by …

Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are of important therapeutic value as they are the target site of aspirin-like drugs. Here I report nine new COX-1 splice variants in chapter 1, which I characterized with regard to heme-binding and other properties. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are co-inducible in many tissues following mitogenic and proinflammatory stimulation. In chapter 2, I investigate the physical and enzymatic properties of human COX-2 and iNOS and demonstrate that, despite reports to the contrary by another laboratory, they do not interact. Upwards of $50 billion in capital needs go unmet each year in Indian Country in such vital sectors as infrastructure, community facilities, housing, and enterprise development, in part due to the restrictions imposed on tribal access to the capital markets, specifically the ability of tribal governments to issue tax-exempt debt. Section 7871 of the Internal Revenue Code requires tribal tax-free bond proceeds to be used only for “essential governmental functions,” a restriction not applicable to state and municipal bonds, and Section 7871(e) further limits the scope of available tax-exempt bonding to activities “customarily performed by State and local governments with …

Populations of Pinus ponderosa and Juniperus virginiana are expanding into semiarid Sandhills grasslands in Nebraska. To evaluate the physiological basis of their success, we measured the seasonal course of leaf gas exchange, plant water status, and carbon isotope discrimination in these two native trees and two native C₄ grasses (Schizachyrium scoparium and Panicum virgatum). Compared to the trees, grasses had higher net photosynthetic rates (A_net) and water use efficiency (WUE) and more negative predawn and midday water potentials (Ψ) in June and July. While leaf Ψ and rates of leaf gas exchange declined for all …

Novel oxygen sensors consisting of a [Ru(bpy)2phen]2+ (bpy: 2,2′-bipyridyl, phen: phenathroline) portion covalently grafted to a mesostructured silica-based network are prepared in situ via a sol-gel approach with the help of cetyltrimethylammonium-bromide (CTAB) surfactant. 1,10-Phenanthroline covalently grafted to 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate is used as not only the sol-gel precursor but also as the second ligand of the Ru(bpy)2d2 · 2H2O complex to prepare the sol-gel-derived mesostructured silicates for an oxygen sensor. For comparison purposes, the oxygen sensors in which [Ru(bpy)2phen]Q2 is conventionally physically incorporated into the matrix are also prepared. Objectives: The thyroid gland is a relatively uncommon site for secondary malignancy. Even lesscommon is metastasis of malignant melanoma to the thyroid gland. We present a case of malignantmelanoma metastatic to the thyroid gland presenting as thyroid enlargement.

Study Design: This is a case report which utilizes chart review, intraoperative photographs,radiographic images, and pathology slides.

Methods: A 68 year old patient with no prior evidence of primary skin melanoma presented witha neck mass which tested positive for melanoma. A year and a half following modified radical neckdissection, the patient …

Phenology, or the seasonality of recurring biological events such as vegetation canopy development and senescence, is a primary constraint on global carbon, water and energy cycles. We analyzed multiseason Ku-band radar backscatter measurements from the SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT scatterometer to determine canopy phenology and growing season vegetation dynamics from 2000 to 2002 at 27 sites representing major global land cover classes and regionally across most of North America. We compared these results with similar information derived from the MODIS leaf area index (LAI) data product (MOD-15A2). In site-level linear regression analysis, the correspondence between radar backscatter and LAI was significant (p < 0.05) at most but not all sites and was generally higher (R^{2 …}

Nitrate leaching from agricultural soils can increase groundwater nitrate concentrations. The objectives of the study were to assess the accumulation and movement of nitrate in the soil profile over a 2-year period under def¬icit irrigation conditions following a one time application of N in cattle feedlot manure and commercial fertilizer to corn at rates to achieve yield goals expected under conditions of full irrigation.
