Protocol development for science based mapping of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) requires comprehensive ground truth data describing the full range of variability observed in the target. The Indian River Lagoon, Florida, extends along 250 km of the east central Florida coast adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. The lagoon crosses the transition zone between the Caribbean and Carolinian zoogeographic provinces making it highly diverse. For large scale mapping and management of SAV four common and three uncommon species of seagrass (Tracheophyta) and three broad groups of macroalgae; red algae (Rhodophyta), green algae (Chlorophyta), and brown algae (Phaeophyta) are recognized. In this article, experimental and numerical analyses to investigate the thermal control of an innovative vortex tube based polymerase chain reaction (VT-PCR) thermocycler are described. VT-PCR is capable of rapid DNA amplification and real-time optical detection. The device rapidly cycles six 20 μl 96 bp λ-DNA samples between the PCR stages (denaturation, annealing, and elongation) for 30 cycles in approximately 6 min. Two-dimensional numerical simulations have been carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT v.6.2.16. ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: This work is performed to measure the concentration of serum selenium in northern Baghdad subject. Selenium is one of the trace element that plays an important role in physiological functions of human body. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Selenium levels of blood serum were measured using furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. RESULTS : The results obtained in this work showed a decrease in selenium level and the reduction is proportional to the duration of age. This can be explained principally due to the type of diet and malabsorption young subject may differ in certain diet intake.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: A matched case control study was conducted over 6 months period from the 1st of November 1999 to 30th of April 2000 at the maternity and children hospital in Ramadi city with the aim of determining the risk factors that might lead to development of febrile seizures. METHODS: One hundred patients with febrile seizures admitted to the causality department, aged 6-60 months were matched with another one hundred child having fever but without seizure with the same age range, attending the same hospital during the same period. ABSTRACT: BACK GROUND: Organic phosphorus pesticides are most widely preferred pesticides, and know to have detrimental effect on various living organisms. METHODS: Twenty four male Balb/c mice were used. These were divided into four group (1,2,3,4) . Chlorpyriphos was given orally on alternate days by garage (20mg/kg body weight), aqueous garlic alone was given orally daily by garage (200mg/kg body weight, while garlic extract followed by chlorphriphos was also given. RESULTS: Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was measured in liver homogenate . THE AIM: Of this case report is to discus the mode of presentation and best management of this condition. CASE REPORT: A twenty-eight years old male, presented with recurrent upper abdominal pain of three years duration. The pain was radiating to the back and associated with vomiting and low-grade fever. Sequence-Specific Recognition And Cooperative Dimerization Of N-Terminal Aromatic Peptides In Aqueous Solution By A Synthetic Host, Lisa M. Heitmann, Alexander B. Taylor, P John Hart, Adam R. Urbach

This article describes the selective recognition and noncovalent dimerization of N-terminal aromatic peptides in aqueous solution by the synthetic host compound, cucurbit[8]uril (Q8). Q8 is known to bind two aromatic guests simultaneously and, in the presence of methyl viologen, to recognize N-terminal tryptophan over internal and C-terminal sequence isomers. Here, the binding of Q8 to aromatic peptides in the absence of methyl viologen was studied by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), 1H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The peptides studied were of sequence X-Gly-Gly, Gly-X-Gly, and Gly-Gly-X (X = Trp, Phe, Tyr, and His). Q8 selectively binds and dimerizes Trp-Gly-Gly …

The Anchor: 2006
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Biologic Interaction And Their Identification, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James Robins

The definitions of a biologic interaction and causal interdependence are reconsidered in light of a sufficient-component cause framework. Various conditions and statistical tests are derived for the presence of biologic interactions. The conditions derived are sufficient but not necessary for the presence of a biologic interaction. Through a series of examples it is made evident that in the context of monotonic effects, but not in general, the conditions which are derived are closely related but not identical to effect modification on the risk difference scale.

A Theory Of Sufficient Cause Interactions, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James M. Robins

Sufficient-component causes are discussed within the potential outcome framework so as to formalize notions of sufficient causes, synergism and sufficient cause interactions. Doing so allows for the derivation of counterfactual conditions and statistical tests for detecting the presence of sufficient cause interactions. Under the assumption of monotonic effects, more powerful statistical tests for sufficient cause interactions can be derived. The statistical tests derived for sufficient cause interactions are compared with and contrasted to interaction terms in standard statistical models.
