Low Impact Storm Water Management Projects At The University Of New Hampshire, Stephen H. Jones, James Houle

The University of New Hampshire has become increasingly concerned with storm water management on the Durham campus. Due to Federal regulations many regional municipalities are feeling pressure to enhance and increase management of storm water to reduce impacts to surface waters. The specific objective of this proposal is to demonstrate reductions in the discharge of storm water runoff from UNH-Durham campus properties. The construction and use of three Low Impact Development (LID) integrated management systems on UNH property will help UNH and the UNH Stormwater Center to champion innovative approaches in the state and region for reducing storm water runoff …

Subcentennial-Scale Climatic And Hydrologic Variability In The Gulf Of Mexico During The Early Holocene, Jenna M. Lodico, Benjamin P. Flower, Terrence M. Quinn

An early Holocene record from the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) reveals climatic and hydrologic changes during the interval from 10.5 to 7 thousand calendar years before present from paired analyses of Mg/Ca and δ¹⁸O on foraminiferal calcite. The sea surface temperature record based on foraminiferal Mg/Ca contains six oscillations and an overall ∼1.5°C warming that appears to be similar to the September–March insolation difference. The δ¹⁸O of seawater in the GOM (δ¹⁸O_GOM) record contains six oscillations, including a −0.8‰ excursion that may be associated with the “8.2 ka climate event” or a …

Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is a potent growth factor that is involved in many important biological processes. Regulation of the level of secreted mature BMP4 determines the biological effects of BMP4 on cells in the local microenvironment. Previous studies suggested that Gremlin, a member of DAN family proteins, antagonizes BMP4 activity by sequestering extracellular BMP4. Herein, we report a novel intracellular regulatory mechanism by which Gremlin interacts with BMP4 precursor, prevents secretion of mature BMP4, and therefore inhibits BMP4 activity more efficiently. Furthermore, we also defined a 30-amino acid peptide sequence within the Gremlin DAN domain that is essential …

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

In previous research, microsatellite markers have been used to geographically and phylogenetically characterize and identify populations of sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus Gmelin). Given that sea scallops are a closely related species to bay scallops (Argopecten irradians Lamarck), we have investigated whether the flanking DNA sequences of sea scallop microsatellite loci have been conserved in the bay scallop. We found that in all seven sets of published sea scallop PCR primers (Pma130, -132, -135, -180, -200, -212, and -275) that were tested with bay scallop DNA, there was sequence conservation and amplification of microsatellite regions. The concept of autonomy, as conceptualized by SDT researchers, in relationship to the development of psychopathology has received little empirical attention. According to Selfdetermination theory (SDT; Ryan, Deci, & Grolnick, 1995), if parents facilitate, rather than undermine, the critical parenting dimensions of autonomy support, involvement, and structure, then children will develop as psychologically healthy adults. In addition, SDT would also predict that based on these critical parenting dimensions, children will develop differential inner motivational orientations (i.e., autonomy, control, and impersonal) representing varying degrees of autonomy (i.e., self determined behavior), which in turn should predict psychological distress or health.
