In a world full of digital information we should be able to easily collect, organize, annotate, and leverage information from many different sources. This should be easy to do and not interrupt our normal workflow. A system to support information collection and organization should be user-friendly and as unobtrusive as possible, while still allowing for flexible and intelligent annotation. It should also be able to leverage the inherent information content of a collection of annotated information. We present a system that will demonstrate how these ideas can come together to make information collection easier and more productive. The system facilitates …

Storm deposits in ancient shelf sediments typically form thick sequences of interbedded sand and mud deposited during shoreline regression, whereas modern shelf sediments are generally thin veneers deposited during shoreline transgression. In this paper we present a preliminary comparison between ancient and modern storm beds deposited in these disparate contexts. Hurricane Katrina deposited a storm bed on the Louisiana shelf with a maximum observed thickness of 0.58 m, which thinned to approximately 0.1 m at 200 km west of landfall. This thickness is similar to event beds observed in both ancient and modern sediments. Using data for tropical cyclone landfalls …

The charge transport properties of the low-dimensional thermoelectric materials K₂Bi_8-xSb_xSe₁₃ (02Bi_8-xSb_xSe₁₃ was analyzed on the basis of the classical semiconductor theory and discussed in the context of recent band calculations. The results suggest that the K₂Bi_8-xSb_xSe₁₃ materials possess coexisting domains with semimetallic and semiconducting characters whose ratio is influenced by the value of x and by local defects. Wildland fires are expected to become more frequent and severe in many ecosystems, potentially posing a threat to many sensitive species. We evaluated the effects of a large, stand-replacement wildfire on three species of pond-breeding amphibians by estimating changes in occupancy of breeding sites during the three years before and after the fire burned 42 of 83 previously surveyed wetlands. Annual occupancy and colonization for each species was estimated using recently developed models that incorporate detection probabilities to provide unbiased parameter estimates. Open pit mining usually results in a void that, over time, fills with water and becomes a pit lake. The goal for pit lakes is to create sustainable systems that positively contribute to local and regional watersheds. One long-standing hypothesis for attaining the goal of sustainability has been to create and maintain meromictic lakes (lakes that do not completely mix on a yearly cycle). It is believed that meromixis minimizes atmospheric oxygen exposure to pit walls and concomitant acid generation and minimizes reentrainment of metals to the upper waters during seasonal mixes. One genus, Triaenodes of the long-horned caddisfly family Leptoceridae includes approximately 245 species globally and is cosmopolitan in distribution, occurring in all major faunal regions. The species of the genus, along with other species of caddisflies, are especially sensitive to pollution and are used by developed countries to monitor water quality.
Two hundred twenty-one species are reviewed and an additional 9 species are new to science. Twenty-six species groups are recognized in these subgenera of Triaenodes. The goal of this research is to identify and characterize the enzymes (lyases) responsible for chromophore (bilin) attachment to phycobiliproteins (light harvesting) in cyanobacteria. Candidates for these lyases were first identified in Fremyella diplosiphon as cpeS and cpeT. In Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002, there are three cpeS-like genes (named cpcS, cpcU, and cpcV) and one cpeT-like gene (named cpcT). These genes were cloned, overexpressed, and purified from E. coli. The CpcS and CpcU proteins form a 1:1 complex and catalyze the addition of phycocyanobilin (PCB) to â-82 cysteinyl residue on phycocyanin (PC) in vitro. Tryptic digestion and C18 RP-HPLC confirmed …

The impact of the Gamal Abdul Nasser's nationalization of the Suez Canal on Anthony Eden's policy making during the Suez Crisis is the bases of this research. Using data from the Cabinet records of Eden's Egypt Committee, this research will demonstrate that Eden and the Egypt Committee acted irrationally during the Suez Crisis and by doing so created a schism in the Atlantic Alliance. This rift would force President Dwight Eisenhower to side with the Soviet Union against Britain to resolve the conflict. This thesis addresses New Orleans' "Bio-Med" sector, a broad category that includes biosciences research, health care, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing. Biotechnology, in particular, has emerged as an attractive target for economic development in New Orleans, in Louisiana, and in the nation as a whole. Informed by economic geography and development literature, this research presents a narrative of efforts to foster the Bio-Med industries in New Orleans as a source of economic diversification and employment. Energy is the main bottleneck for wireless sensor networks and it has dominating effects on network lifetime. Sensors have finite energy and during the process of sensing and transmitting data to the cluster head they lose energy. Sensors that are furthest away from the cluster head require more energy than the closer ones. These losses of energy cause sensors to die faster, lower coverage area and hence network death. An approach for processing sonar signals with the ultimate goal of ocean bottom sediment classification and underwater buried target classification is presented in this dissertation. Work reported for sediment classification is based on sonar data collected by one of the AN/AQS-20's sonars. Synthetic data, simulating data acquired by parametric sonar, is employed for target classification. The technique is based on the Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT), which is better suited for sonar applications because FrFT uses linear chirps as basis functions. In this thesis, a new synthetic methodology for the high yield synthesis of spineltype transition metal ferrite nanoparticles has been developed. This approach is based on the complexation of the first-row transition metal cations with diethylene glycol (DEG) followed by the hydrolysis of the resulting chelate iron alkoxide complexes in the presence of an alkaline hydroxide. Due to the passivation of their surfaces with DEG molecules, the as-prepared nanoparticles are stable against agglomeration and can be easily dispersed in polar protic solvents (water, alcohols, etc.). Alternatively, a postsynthesis passivation with carboxylate ions can render the iron oxide nanocrystals highly dispersible …
