Courts handling child abuse and neglect cases face a daunting task. Within one to three days after a child is removed from his home, a court hearing must be held to determine whether court intervention and continued removal of the child is necessary. At this hearing, the court must sort through and evaluate the state's allegations and assess the various risks posed by placing the child in foster care or returning the child to one or both of his parents. Courts must weigh the heavy emphasis the law places on preserving the family unit against the equally paramount mandate to …

It was over a decade ago when Rudine Sims Bishop (1992) prophetically dubbed Angela Johnson as possibly one of "the most prominent AfricanAmerican literary artists of the next generation" (616). At the time she had four picture books to her credit, but the following year she would publish her debut young adult novel, Toning the Sweep. From there, a number of other award-winners would follow and the total of young adult books would increase to eleven and counting. To date, Johnson has three Coretta Scott King Awards, a Michael L. Printz award, and the "Genius Grant" on her list of …

A Drug By Any Other Name ... ? Paradoxes In Dietary Supplement Risk Regulation, Lars Noah, Barbara A. Noah

Dietary supplements present vexing regulatory challenges for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although several observers have called for reform or repeal of Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), and the FDA often has lamented its lack of meaningful authority over dietary supplements, this Author suggests that the agency actually possesses the regulatory muscle to adopt a more aggressive risk identification and risk management strategy within the confines of DSHEA, and that it need not ask Congress to amend the statute.

Objectives. To investigate the frictional resistance of two new ceramic brackets, two self-ligating bracket, and one standard stainless steel bracket with several methods of ligation. The size and composition of the archwires will also be varied. The wires used are all stainless steel and the sizes are .018, 19X25, and 21X25. The frictional forces obtained in this study will be more useful when compared in a relative manner to one another, as opposed to the actual forces that will be measured. Methods. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting ones, is tightly controlled under physiological conditions, and deregulated angiogenesis contributes to many pathological situations. This study investigates the role of PI3K/Akt pathway in both physiological and pathological angiogenesis. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) is an endothelial specific growth factor that plays a critical role in vessel maturation and stabilization during angiogenesis. We found that Ang1 potently induced p70S6K1 activation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). p70S6K1 is a downstream target of PI3K, but its role in angiogenesis has not be defined. Examining Problem-Solving Interpretations: The Role Of Age, Sex, And Femininity, Jennifer A. Flinn

The current study examined age and sex differences in communal interpretations (statements focusing on the needs of others), and whether participants' femininity mediated these differences. One hundred and ninety six participants, 121 younger adults (M=19.26, SD=131: 53 M, 68 F) and 75 older adults (M=73.74, SD=7.65: 36 M, 39 F), were given a vignette regarding a hypothetical job relocation problem that involved either a male or female protagonist. To assess interpretations, participants were asked to indicate all the issues to be considered. The degree to which interpretations reflected communal concerns was coded. Results showed that women had higher communal interpretation …
