The purpose of this study was to examine and identify the factors that have influenced changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages during the initial thirteen years of ecological development of Lake Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. Univariate and multivariate statistical methods were used to determine the level of influence lake water chemistry, lake physical characteristics and planktonic groups will have on overall plankton community dynamics. Removal Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin Microcystin -Lr By Biofiltration: Identification Of Toxin-Degrading Bacteria And Effects Of Backwashing, Lazaro Eleuterio

The removal of the cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR by slow and rapid drinking water biofilters, the presence of the microcystin-degrading bacteria in operating biofilters, the impact of backwashing on the removal of microcystin by biofiltration, and the prediction of microcystin-LR removal using a nonsteady-state biofilm model were investigated. A newly recognized microcystin-LR degrader, Morganella morganii, exists in Lake Mead and operating active biofilters. The results of the biodegradation tests indicated that addition of a carbon source, in the form of biodegradable NOM, significantly delayed the degradation of microcystin-LR. Research reflecting the diverse thoughts, experiences, and perspectives of the Black school superintendent is scarce despite the noteworthy role Black leaders and educators have demonstrated within and beyond the Black community. Transmission Electron Microscope

Polyelectrolytes are an important class of macromolecules that contain dissociable ionic groups. When introduced into polar solvent, usually the universal solvent water, dissociation takes place so that electrically charged macromolecule is suspended in solution. The electrostatic interaction is operative between ionized groups inside the macromolecule, between the macromolecules, between the counterions, and between the macromolecule and counterion. Since this interaction is characterized by its long-range nature, the solution exhibits various interesting properties including the polyelectrolyte behavior very different from solutions of neutral polymers.

The time of deposition of biological samples at a crime scene is vital for interpreting the value of the samples in cases where the location by itself is not incriminating. Previous work from our laboratory showed a method to estimate the bloodstain age by using reverse transcription real-time PCR based on the amount of RNA decay of 18S compared to β-actin. In order to eliminate variability in expression levels between 18S and β-actin, an approach utilizing two differently sized regions of the β-actin gene was investigated. The Effects Of Residual Trees On Regeneration Dynamics Following A Diameter Limit Harvest, Travis J. Deluca

Ten years after diameter-limit cutting, shading from residual trees had a negative effect on regeneration growth in three Appalachian hardwood stands. Regardless of shade tolerance, saplings growing outside the crown shading of residual overstory trees had higher densities and were taller and larger in diameter. Most shade-intolerant and mid-tolerant species decreased in total height and diameter as overstory basal area increased. Black cherry height (p<0.0001) and diameter (p=0.0002) had a significant negative relationship with increasing overstory basal area. Total height of shade-tolerant species was not affected and diameter showed a positive relationship. Red maple diameter had a significant positive relationship (p<0.0001) with increasing overstory basal area. Rehabilitation of stands after diameter-limit cutting requires silvicultural release operations to reduce competition in the new cohort.

Electrospray is a well-developed ionization technique for transferring intact dissolved molecules from liquid into the gas-phase through a capillary emitter. As a 'soft' ionization method, intact molecules are transformed and are ready for mass identification and structure characterization. Quadrupole ion traps are versatile mass analyzers and are well-known for the capability to perform tandem mass scans by which the structural information can be obtained.;Collision-induced dissociation (CID) is applicable used in quadrupole ion trap to produce fragment ions. A portable Transparent Indenter Measurement (TIM) instrument that combines Instrumented Indentation Testing characteristics with optical microscopy through a transparent half ball indenter has been developed. The TIM instrument can provide the following experimental data: (a) the load applied as the indenter penetrates the specimen, (b) the displacement of the piezoelectric tip, and (c) the indented area. Peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS), cell wall component of gram-positive bacteria, was used to intoxicate sheep to study mastitis-related reproductive failure, mediated by TNF-alpha. Estrus was synchronized in ten adult Suffolk ewes. Four days after mating (Day 0) the jugular and posterior vena cava (saphenous vein) were catheterized. On Day 5, ewes were assigned randomly to either: control group (n = 4, 0.9% NaCl), or PG-PS group (n = 6, 30 mug/kg BW, i.v.). Plasma samples were collected from both jugular and saphenous vein catheters every 15 minutes for 6 hours. Radioimmunoassay quantified concentrations of TNF-alpha. Adolescent Religiosity And Conformity To Parents: Is Sex A Moderator?, Rebecca Kim Summers

This study examines relations between adolescent reports of conformity to their parents and religiosity and if these are moderated by the sex of the adolescent and parent. Self-report data was collected from 121 ninth and tenth graders enrolled in three non-metropolitan high schools. Religiosity was measured by Schumm et al.'s (1991) modified version of Gorsuch and Venable's (1983) scales. Conformity to Parents was assessed using Peterson's (Peterson, Rollins, & Thomas, 1985) Conformity to Parents scales. Four regressions were used. Results indicate that females: (a) report higher levels of conformity to parents and religiosity than males and (b) that when adolescent …

The in-store experience as defined in this study includes the perception of store atmosphere and cognitive responses. This thesis examined newspapers’ coverage of two female politicians. One is U.S. Senator and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. The newspaper is The Post-Standard (Syracuse, NY). The other is Hsiu-Lien Lu, the first female vice president of Taiwan. The newspaper is China Times (Taiwan). The research analyzed articles in these two newspapers to determine whether the terms associated with Clinton and Lu were gender neutral, feminist or patriarchal. The study compares how media represent female politicians in the two societies, and further illustrates the similarities and differences in the American and Taiwanese societies. Citation analyses were carried out on master’s thesis in three disciplines, forensic psychology, forensic science and criminal justice, completed and deposited in John Jay library from 1991 to 2004. The aim was to determine the effect of availability of electronic journals on students’ choice of references. The number of journal citations and the ratio of journal articles to all citations was assessed. Criminal justice theses listed more citations that either science of psychology theses, but relatively fewer journal articles. An increase over time was seen in the number of journal articles cited and in the ratio of journal articles to …

Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children is a two-pronged postcolonial critique. Saleem Sinai's metanarrative of emancipation that also overhauls the postcolonial episteme.^ While Rushdie's confrontation of native subjectivity and the epistemic structures that inhibit the native's agency are plainly rooted in the postcolonial conversation, the major theorists in the field do not offer models of opposition that properly house his intervention. The work of Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha, and Gayatri Spivak is representative of the trajectory of the strategies of discursive opposition to the employed by postcolonial theory. None of these theorists' metaphors for opposition create sufficient distance from the knowledge …

Steven, a minor living with his mother, enjoyed a nurturing relationship with his father, Mark. He saw his father every weekend and looked forward to their time together. Mark looked for ways in which to stay involved in his child's life. Two days ago, the Department of Human Services (DHS) removed Steven from his mother's custody because, unbeknown to Mark, Stevens mother was selling drugs in the home. At the time of removal, the police did not inquire about the whereabouts of Stevens father; DHS immediately placed Steven in a foster home.
