Summer Programming: What Do Children Say?, Nila Cobb, Stacey Harper, Kerri Mccormick, Kimary Mcneil Mar 2006

Summer Programming: What Do Children Say?, Nila Cobb, Stacey Harper, Kerri Mccormick, Kimary Mcneil

Journal of Youth Development

Studies document that low-income children lose academic skills over the summer. Six years of reading achievement data collected by Energy Express, a nationally recognized summer reading and nutrition program in West Virginia, has established the efficacy of the intervention. The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of a voluntary summer program that foster participation. Interview data indicates that children attend because they perceive the program as fun; large creative art (for example, full-body portraits, appliance box castles, wall murals) seems particularly important. Energy Express gives children both the fun they want and the enrichment they need in the …

The Employer Preference For The Subservient Worker And The Making Of The Brown Collar Workplace, Leticia M. Saucedo Mar 2006

The Employer Preference For The Subservient Worker And The Making Of The Brown Collar Workplace, Leticia M. Saucedo

ExpressO

The rapidly growing Latino immigrant population raises questions about how the “brown collar” worker is being incorporated into our economy. Newly arrived Latino immigrants, or “brown collar” workers, are increasingly found in segregated workplaces throughout the country. They typically perform the least desirable jobs in the most unstable conditions in our economy. This article explores the creation of these workplaces by focusing first, on the conditions that create brown collar subservience and second, on employer practices that seek workers out for their subservience. Today’s anti-discrimination law does not adequately capture the form of discrimination lurking in the interaction between brown …

Legal Archaeology And Feminist Legal Theory: A Case Study Of A Violation Of A Protective Order , Debora L. Threedy Mar 2006

Legal Archaeology And Feminist Legal Theory: A Case Study Of A Violation Of A Protective Order , Debora L. Threedy

ExpressO

This article explores the intersection between the field of legal archaeology and feminist legal theory through the medium of a case study of the prosecution of the violation of a protective order.

Both legal archaeology and feminist theory employ “bottom up,” or grounded, theorizing; that is, they begin with specific context and move from there to generalization or abstraction, rather than the other way around. And both operate from a critical perspective that consciously challenges what we think we know about how law operates. For example, both are interested in exploring how systemic vulnerabilities, such as conscious or unconscious gender …

From Womanhood To Sisterhood: The Evolution Of The Brigham Young University Women's Conference, Velda Gale Davis Lewis Mar 2006

From Womanhood To Sisterhood: The Evolution Of The Brigham Young University Women's Conference, Velda Gale Davis Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

For over twenty-five years the Brigham Young University Women's Conference has given women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) the opportunity to go beyond womanhood and share sisterhood. Spurred by the women's movement of the 1970s, LDS women were pressed to define for themselves what it meant to be a woman in the Church. This discovery and defining process often brought confusion, criticism and conflict. As women sought to reconcile the discrepancies between their own lives and views, their internal definition and the external definition they received from others, a reconstruction began to take …

In The Best Interest Of The Child, Ellen L. Buckwalter Mar 2006

In The Best Interest Of The Child, Ellen L. Buckwalter

ExpressO

Each year more than 200,000 children in the United States are abducted by family members. When a child is abducted across international borders, the difficulties are compounded. Since the late 1970s, The Department of State’s Office of Children’s Issues has been contacted in approximately 16,000 cases involving children who were either abducted from the United States or prevented from returning to the U.S. by one of their parents.

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (“the Convention”) adopted on October 24, 1980, reflects a worldwide concern about the harmful effects that parental kidnapping has on children …
