The Ins And Outs Of School Provider Literature: A Multi-Year Content Analysis On Lgbt Youth, Caitlin Conor Ryan
The Ins And Outs Of School Provider Literature: A Multi-Year Content Analysis On Lgbt Youth, Caitlin Conor Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
This study is based on a content analysis of two primary sources: 1) literature published on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth in professional journals for school providers (school counselors, nurses, psychologists and social workers) over more than a 30-year period; and 2) materials developed for school providers on LGBT youth by states with laws, regulations and professional policies related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity in schools. Fifteen professional journals were identified that serve as primary and secondary journals for school providers. A total of 41 articles were published in these journals on LGBT youth between 1937 and …

Rational Alcohol Addiction: Evidence From The Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Ingo Geishecker
Rational Alcohol Addiction: Evidence From The Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Ingo Geishecker
Center for Policy Research
Alcohol consumption in Russia is legendary and has been reported to be the third leading cause of death in the former Soviet Union after heart disease and cancer. Are Russian alcohol consumers rational addicts? This paper uses eight rounds of a nationally representative Russian survey spanning the period 1994-2003 to estimate a rational addiction (RA) model for alcohol consumption. This is done in a panel data setting as well as on a wave by wave basis. The profile of the Russian drinker finds a huge difference between males and females and the model is estimated by gender. We do not …

To 'Brown It Up' Or 'Bring Down The Brown': Identity And Strategy In Second-Generation, South Asian-Canadian Youth, Purnima Sundar
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
There is a growing body of research examining how ethnicity and race are implicated in identity development among ethno-racially diverse youth. Much of this research has focused on newcomer youth, resulting in a limited understanding of the particular challenges experienced by those have spent the majority of their lives in multicultural Canada. Furthermore, most of this research has portrayed identity as a static property, and youth as rather passive in the acquisition and expression of their identities. The current study explored the complex and dynamic ways that racialized youth create and recreate identities within the various social environments they participate. …
Political Will As A Determinant Of Health In Ontario: Implications For Progressive Human Services, M. Anthony Hutchinson
Political Will As A Determinant Of Health In Ontario: Implications For Progressive Human Services, M. Anthony Hutchinson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The social determinants of health (SDOH) are the broad range of societal factors such as income and its distribution, education and literacy, (un)employment, health care, and so on, that contribute to the overall (aggregate) health, well-being and quality of life of our society as a whole (vis-a-vis, population health). Central questions in this thesis are: "Is political will a determinant of health?" and if so, "How is political will a determinant of health?" In responding to these questions this study analyzes a never-before-assembled Province of Ontario data set (1980 through 2000) rigourously operationalized as ten indicators of political will and …

Attachment Representations In Mothers Of Young Children With Developmental Delay: Relations With Concurrent And Later Maternal Depression, Mary Catherine Hutchinson
Attachment Representations In Mothers Of Young Children With Developmental Delay: Relations With Concurrent And Later Maternal Depression, Mary Catherine Hutchinson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Despite the importance of early parent-child attachment and maternal depression to child development and the vulnerability of children with developmental delay, maternal attachment representations and their relation to depression have not been studied in this population. In this study, I examined attachment representations (i.e., internal working models) in 47 mothers of 4- to 8-year-old children with developmental delay and explored the relation between these attachment representations and maternal depression assessed concurrently and again one and two years later. The Working Model of the Child Interview (WMCI) was used to classify representations as balanced (i.e., secure) or non-balanced (i.e., disengaged or …
Out Of State And Out Of Luck: The Treatment Of Non-Custodial Parents Under The Interstate Compact On The Placement Of Children, Vivek Sankaran
Out Of State And Out Of Luck: The Treatment Of Non-Custodial Parents Under The Interstate Compact On The Placement Of Children, Vivek Sankaran
Articles
Courts handling child abuse and neglect cases face a daunting task. Within one to three days after a child is removed from his home, a court hearing must be held to determine whether court intervention and continued removal of the child is necessary. At this hearing, the court must sort through and evaluate the state's allegations and assess the various risks posed by placing the child in foster care or returning the child to one or both of his parents. Courts must weigh the heavy emphasis the law places on preserving the family unit against the equally paramount mandate to …

Effects Of Teaching In English At Swedish Universities, Ingrid Johansson, Bosse Jonsson
Effects Of Teaching In English At Swedish Universities, Ingrid Johansson, Bosse Jonsson
EDU-COM International Conference
English plays an increasingly important role at Swedish universities but not much is known about its effects on the quality of teaching and learning. Therefore, a large research project which is collaborative and interdisciplinary, crossing language studies in humanities with education, is being planned. One of several aims of the project is to study the consequences of teaching in English on learning and study achievements. A few pre-studies have been carried out in order to develop more detailed research questions. Two of the pre-studies will be presented in this paper. In one of them, ten university teachers with Swedish as …
Self-Injury: An Analysis Of The Behavior, Causes, And Effective Treatments, Lindsey Huyser
Self-Injury: An Analysis Of The Behavior, Causes, And Effective Treatments, Lindsey Huyser
Honors Program Theses
Society has also become obsessed with the quest for a perfect body (Lader & Conterio, 1998). Often, this causes great damage for the self-esteem of women because they are pressured to live up to these high expectations. Self-injury is a way to make women feel better. There has been a rise in women working outside of the home as well, making latchkey children a normal occurrence. Children are often home by themselves when they return from school in today's world, which leaves them with nobody to talk to when problems arise. Self-injury can become a way to heal these issues.
The Effects Of Divorce On Children And Interventions For All Members Of The Family Unit, Laurie Arieux
The Effects Of Divorce On Children And Interventions For All Members Of The Family Unit, Laurie Arieux
Honors Program Theses
ln 1989 more than 1 million children, on average, were affected by divorce in the United States and this number has risen to over 40% of the population under 18 in recent years (Amato & Keith, 1991 a). The assumption is that this number will continue to grow. When one considers that there are also parents who suffer from these stresses the number grows substantially into something worthy of much consideration. With so many people being affected by this growing trend the desire to understand the differences it has on families is growing. Divorce changes children in many ways including …

Role Identity Formation Of Occupational Therapy Students, Denise A. Rotert
Role Identity Formation Of Occupational Therapy Students, Denise A. Rotert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an examination of the professional socialization process of occupational therapy students from a role identity theoretical perspective. First-year students, second-year students, fieldwork students, and faculty at an occupational therapy educational program at a Midwestern institution volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected through focus group interviews and surveys. The focus of the study was to determine factors associated with occupational therapy students’ identity salience, commitment, and role-person merger. Interviews and surveys were used to determine what factors, over and above didactic education, influence the socialization of students into the profession of occupational therapy and what …
The Paradox Of Personality: Mental Illness, Employment Discrimination, And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Deirdre M. Smith
The Paradox Of Personality: Mental Illness, Employment Discrimination, And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Deirdre M. Smith
Faculty Publications
Both medicine and the law devote considerable concern to drawing lines, that is, to classifying and making distinctions. In medicine, such line-drawing occurs when a person is designated healthy or ill, normal or disordered. In the law, such line-drawing determines who does and does not bear legal responsibility for a given situation. This Article reviews the demarcation drawn by psychiatry and the courts between disfavored personality and mental illness, a dichotomy not based upon empirical science and therefore, wholly susceptible to social construction and implementation. While society may pathologize noxious personalities, thus making them disabilities, it is loath to extend …

Introduction: The Leading Indicators Project, Dmitri N. Shalin
Social Health of Nevada Reports
Policy makers of all ages have sought to ground their decisions in sound knowledge. As early as 1790, President George Washington told Congress that “Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness. In one in which the measures of government receive their impressions so immediately from the sense of the community as in ours it is proportionably essential.” In our time, generating and disseminating reliable information has become a passion. This modern attitude is captured in buzzwords like “knowledge-based interference,” “data-informed decision making,” “information-driven needs assessment,” and it finds a powerful expression in the Leading Indicators (LI) …
Dropout And Graduation Rates In Nevada, Sandra D. Owens-Kane
Dropout And Graduation Rates In Nevada, Sandra D. Owens-Kane
Social Health of Nevada Reports
This report spotlights the high school graduation and dropout rates in Nevada, shows how the trends in our state compared to the trends in other states, and outlines community resources available to Nevadans seeking to improve their educational achievements. High school dropout and graduation rates are key indicators by which we judge an educational system. The importance of these indicators stems from the fact that higher educational achievement correlates positively with individual and community social health – e.g., the higher the graduation rates of individuals within a community, the greater the level of personal fulfillment and community development. Conversely, high …

Multidimensional Model Of Destination Brands: An Application Of Customer -Based Brand Equity, Soyoung Boo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Branding's extension into tourism destination management is expanDing However, most studies to date have focused at the conceptual exploration level or expansion of image-level theory. This study examined empirical information on building the destination brand model through a scale purification process, ensuring its reliability and validity. The customer-based brand equity measurement model from the general marketing literature was applied in a destination context. The proposed model was tested with an online survey sample of Las Vegas and Atlantic City visitors because both destinations are in a similar destination brand category. Findings show that although the proposed model showed a good …
Identifying Informal Advisors Among Neuromuscular Specialists, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski
Identifying Informal Advisors Among Neuromuscular Specialists, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Quality improvement efforts in healthcare services often center on influencing provider behavior through clinical practice guidelines and research evidence. Passive dissemination of such information has quite limited effects on medical practice. Active implementation strategies focus on translating knowledge into practice, at times recruiting local physicians as "opinion leaders" to act as change agents, champion the adoption of new practice parameters, and promote the diffusion of medical innovation; This study developed an instrument to identify neuromuscular specialists whose advice is valued by colleagues, thus extending and updating similar work among educationally influential community physicians by Hiss, Macdonald, and Davis (1978). Neuromuscular …

An Analysis Of Fiscal Allocations In Elementary Schools Meeting And Not Meeting Ayp, William Roy Michael Barton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study used a sequential explanatory, mixed-methods design to explore the relationship between fiscal decision making and the school improvement planning process at school sites in a large, southwestern school district and the impact those decisions and decision-making processes may have had on student achievement outcomes in elementary schools; The methodology for the study is comprised of two research phases. Phase I included a quantitative analysis of elementary school expenditure patterns across those categories delineated in the Cooper's and Lybrand's Finance Analysis Model databank for a large urban district in the southwest. Comparisons were made across three sub-groups of elementary …
Government Information Research, Susie Skarl
Government Information Research, Susie Skarl
Library Faculty Research
Prior to the mid-1990s, much government information lay outside the mainstream of library catalogs and core indexes and, consequently, was greatly underutilized. Finding government information required negotiating cumbersome search tools, specialized indexes, and separate call number systems. By the end of the 1990s, government information had become more accessible on the World Wide Web. Although the Internet has made searching and finding government information less taxing for patrons, most still require instruction from library staff in order to satisfy their needs in the best possible manner.
Prediction In The Panel Data Model With Spatial Correlation: The Case Of Liquor, Badi H. Baltagi, Dong Li
Prediction In The Panel Data Model With Spatial Correlation: The Case Of Liquor, Badi H. Baltagi, Dong Li
Center for Policy Research
This paper considers the problem of prediction in a panel data regression model with spatial autocorrelation in the context of a simple demand equation for liquor. This is based on a panel of 43 states over the period 1965-1994. The spatial autocorrelation due to neighboring states and the individual heterogeneity across states is taken explicitly into account. We compare the performance of several predictors of the states demand for liquor for one year and five years ahead. The estimators whose predictions are compared include OLS, fixed effects ignoring spatial correlation, fixed effects with spatial correlation, random effects GLS estimator ignoring …
The Asymptotics For Panel Models With Common Shocks, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga
The Asymptotics For Panel Models With Common Shocks, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga
Center for Policy Research
This paper develops a novel asymptotic theory for panel models with common shocks. We assume that contemporaneous correlation can be generated by both the presence of common regressors among units and weak spatial dependence among the error terms. Several characteristics of the panel are considered: cross sectional and time series dimensions can either be fixed or large; factors can either be observable or unobservable; the factor model can describe either cointegration relationship or a spurious regression, and we also consider the stationary case. We derive the rate of convergence and the distribution limits for the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimates …

Coping Strategy Use And Resilience Among Children Reporting Victimization, Julie K. Gepner
Coping Strategy Use And Resilience Among Children Reporting Victimization, Julie K. Gepner
Masters Theses
Prior studies have established the negative implications of peer victimization; additional literature has focused on how children cope with the negative effects of peer bullying. However, no current research has examined the specific coping strategies, which may result in resiliency to the negative effects of peer victimization. The present study examined victimization, coping strategies, and resilience in a sample of 143 third through sixth grade students. The results indicated that the coping strategy of seeking social support was associated with resiliency among victims of aggression. In contrast, coping using externalizing behavior was associated with significantly lower levels of resiliency. The …
The Most Dangerous Profession, Rebecca Roiphe
The Most Dangerous Profession, Rebecca Roiphe
Articles & Chapters
This article chronicles the history of the accounting profession and explains how it has consistently failed to preserve transparency in the markets and protect the public good. I argue that the culture of the profession is due in part to the failure of earlier administrative agencies to retain private auditors for public functions such as ratemaking. Drawing on this insight, I suggest that the culture of professions in general is shaped by the work that professionals do and functions that the profession has historically served.
