Scholarship On Religion And Communities Of Faith, Gerald James Larson

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

When I was asked to participate in this panel, two comments came to mind that, in my view, are pertinent for my own thinking regarding the issue of "Scholarship on Religion and Communities of Faith."

Community-Based Learning: Engaging Students For Success And Citizenship, Atelia Melaville, Amy C. Berg, Martin J. Blank Jan 2006

Community-Based Learning: Engaging Students For Success And Citizenship, Atelia Melaville, Amy C. Berg, Martin J. Blank

Partnerships/Community

In recent years, national tragedies—both man-made and natural—have forced Americans to see how much we rely on strong neighborhoods, communities, and democratic institutions. We’ve seen how lack of attention to their well being affects us all. These events lay bare the moral imperative that underlies the mission of public education—to develop active, engaged citizens who are able to participate in and contribute fully to a democratic society.

Tya Methodology Twentieth-Century Philosophy, And Twenty-First Century Practice: An Examination Of Acting, Directing, And Dramatic Literature, Allen Mccoy Jan 2006

Tya Methodology Twentieth-Century Philosophy, And Twenty-First Century Practice: An Examination Of Acting, Directing, And Dramatic Literature, Allen Mccoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the twentieth century, theatre for young audiences (TYA), or children's theatre, has been situated as something "other" or different than adult theatre, a kind of theatre--but not really theatre, a construct which opened the door to numerous "how to" philosophies geared specifically toward the theatre for young audiences practitioner. As a twenty-first century theatre practitioner, I am interested in how these philosophies are situated within or against current professional practices in the TYA field. This interest led me to the main question of this study: What are the predominant twentieth-century philosophies on acting, directing, and dramatic literature in the …

Dependency By Law: Poverty, Identity, And Welfare Privatization, Frank W. Munger Jan 2006

Dependency By Law: Poverty, Identity, And Welfare Privatization, Frank W. Munger

Articles & Chapters

Privatization of welfare reflects the political pressure to limit public responsibility for protection of social citizenship. Recent welfare reforms incorporate three classic market-like privatization mechanisms--contracting out services forcing allocation of a limited pool of benefits, and deregulation. Deregulation entails strategic diversion and disqualification of large numbers of would-be applicants who are left without alternatives to the labor market. In this article I discuss an empirical study of the effects of deregulation of welfare on the self-perceptions of recipients. Interviews with recipients and with low-wage health care workers, former recipients, show that, criticisms of welfare notwithstanding, they have embraced welfare reforms …

A STUDY OF THE DECISION TO REMOVE CHILDREN FROM THEIR PARENTS BY CHILD WELFARE SUPERVISORS

by Charles F. Lorbeer

Dissertation Chair: Dr. Aqueil Ahmad

Committee Members: Dr. Aqueil Ahmad, Dr. Robert Butters, and Dr. Ashakant Nimbark,

The goal of this study was to analyze the decision by child welfare supervisors to remove children from their parents. This was accomplished by studying the effect that three specific factors have on that decision. The three factors were 1) physical abuse, 2) domestic violence and substance abuse, and 3) availability of services to help the family.

Decision theory provided the conceptual framework for …

Do Information Privacy Concerns Affect Students’ Feeling Of Alienation?, Joseph S. Mollick, John Michael Pearson

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Organizations such as universities collect and use personal data about customers such as students. How do students feel about their university’s practices related to the collection and use of personal data? Using data collected via a survey of 187 students at a large U.S. university, we investigate the effects of these two privacy concerns on students’ feeling of alienation. Implications of the results are discussed in light of ethics, strategy, design, control and administration of personal information management systems.

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum, Pam Dell Fitzgerald, Leihua Van Schoiack Edstrom Jan 2006

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum, Pam Dell Fitzgerald, Leihua Van Schoiack Edstrom

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum is a school-based program developed to reduce and prevent aggressive behavior. Three separate age-appropriate curricula are available for preschool through middle school classrooms (preschool/kindergarten level, elementary level, and middle school/junior high level). The curricula are designed to be teacher-friendly and convenient for classroom use. Their primary purpose is to decrease children's aggressive behaviors by helping children develop habits of prosocial behavior and thought. The curricula employ evidence-based strategies that are built on a broad and solid foundation of research. Each of the three curricula have been evaluated and found to reduce aggression and increase …

The Social Construction Of Wife Beating In Political Discourse, Gretchen Arnold Jan 2006

The Social Construction Of Wife Beating In Political Discourse, Gretchen Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

The issue of wife beating was a common topic of political discourse in 19th century America. After the turn-of-the-century, however, the issue dropped from public view and resurfaced only when contemporary feminists reframed the problem. My paper explains why this issue disappeared from, and then returned to, the political scene. I use contemporary frame analysis to analyze the specific frames to interpret wife beating that appeared in political discourse and tie them to cultural and institutional developments as well as to the work of specific social movements. in particular, I argue that the moral significance each frame gave -or denied- …

The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Class In Social Transitions: Caribbean Immigrant Women Negotiating United States Higher Education, Tracy A. Mcfarlane Jan 2006

The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Class In Social Transitions: Caribbean Immigrant Women Negotiating United States Higher Education, Tracy A. Mcfarlane

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The experiences of immigrant women of color within US higher education provide a unique opportunity to understand the complex influences of intersecting identities within changing social contexts. This study was designed to determine how the social categories of gender, class, race, and nationality operate in Caribbean immigrant women's experience of being college students. Focus groups and life story interviews were conducted with 27 English-speaking Caribbean-born women attending CUNY undergraduate colleges. The data yielded four main findings: First, Caribbean gender roles and traditions are not homogenous; hence, there is variation in the ways in which these affect women's experiences in the …

Research Into Integrated Crime Prevention Strategies For Rail Station Environs: Final Report, Trudi Cooper, Terence Love, Erin Donovan Jan 2006

Research Into Integrated Crime Prevention Strategies For Rail Station Environs: Final Report, Trudi Cooper, Terence Love, Erin Donovan

Research outputs pre 2011

The initial impetus for this project arose from concerns about responses to ‘anti-social behaviour’, especially by young people, in and around rail stations. The primary goal of the research was to develop a collaborative approach that provided a more constructive and integrated response that would produce benefit for local communities, for the Public Transport Authority, and for the young people themselves. In practical terms, this involved:

• Development of interagency collaboration processes to support agencies with diverse goals to participate constructively without loss of autonomy;

• Identification at a local level of the common issues of concern, their causes, and …

How Strong Collaboration Between Legal And Social Service Professionals Will Improve Outcomes For Trafficking Survivors And The Anti-Trafficking Movement, Heather C. Moore Jan 2006

How Strong Collaboration Between Legal And Social Service Professionals Will Improve Outcomes For Trafficking Survivors And The Anti-Trafficking Movement, Heather C. Moore

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article will discuss and demonstrate how attorneys can protect and yield better legal outcomes for their clients by collaborating with social service professionals specifically, and by reconsidering their own roles in serving trafficking survivors--not only as legal advocates, but as informal mental health advocates. This article also presents one model of comprehensive service delivery, that of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery ("CAST"), in which legal and social services complement and support each other within one agency to better serve clients.

Rights Myopia In Child Welfare, Clare Huntington Jan 2006

Rights Myopia In Child Welfare, Clare Huntington

Faculty Scholarship

For decades, legal scholars have debated the proper balance of parents' rights and children's rights in the child welfare system. This Article argues that the debate mistakenly privileges rights. Neither parents' rights nor children's rights serve families well because, as implemented, a solely rights-based model of child welfare does not protect the interests of parents or children. Additionally, even if well-implemented, the model still would not serve parents or children because it obscures the important role of poverty in child abuse and neglect and fosters conflict, rather than collaboration, between the state and families. In lieu of a solely rights-based …
