Vocal Health Of Middle School And High School Choral Directors, Sandra M. Schwartz Jun 2006

Vocal Health Of Middle School And High School Choral Directors, Sandra M. Schwartz

Open Access Dissertations

Teachers are considered professional voice users because they depend on the regular and uninterrupted use of the voice. The nature of teaching requires more extensive use of the voice than other professions. Therefore, teachers are faced with a greater risk of developing voice problems. In addition to using the voice to present content to students, teachers must also manage the classroom and student behavior. All of these activities have potential to compromise vocal integrity. The purpose of this study was to examine the vocal health of selected middle school and high school choral directors. Specifically, it explored relationships between vocal …

Collaborative Leadership And The Design Of A School-Based Chemical Health Service System, Susan K. Hedlund

Theses and Graduate Projects

People involved in the design included representatives from school districts, county government departments, chemical dependency treatment agencies, nonprofit organizations, and a parent. The goal of this project was to create an effective, sustainable, and cohesive collaboration through the use of a facilitation process that illustrated the principles of collaborative leadership. The project demonstrated that interagency collaboration, along with effective leadership skills, can be successful in achieving meaningful system change that benefits adolescents and their …

An Integrated Perspective On The Collateral Consequences Of Criminal Convictions And Reentry Issues Faced By Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, Michael Pinard Jun 2006

An Integrated Perspective On The Collateral Consequences Of Criminal Convictions And Reentry Issues Faced By Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, Michael Pinard

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the emergent focus on the collateral consequences of criminal convictions and the reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals. Specifically, the article details the ways in which legal scholars, policy analysts, elected officials, legal services organizations and community based organizations have begun to address these components of the criminal justice system. The article argues that these various groups have compartmentalized collateral consequences and reentry by focusing almost exclusively on one component to the exclusion of the other. In doing so, they have narrowed the lens through which to view these components, and have therefore missed opportunities to develop integrated …

Taking Liberties, Matt Kozusko Jun 2006

Taking Liberties, Matt Kozusko

English and Creative Writing Faculty Publications

The 'place' scholars have assigned to the stage in early modern London is as much a reflection of the procedures of contemporary literary criticism as a reflection of the cultural function of popular drama in the early modern period. Modern critics are often not engaged in re-examining available data, preferring instead to rest on a conjectural paradigm or heuristic that has hardened, over the past couple of decades, into a New Historicist version of 'fact'. Critics have collapsed boundaries and important distinctions in London jurisdiction and geography in the interest of a unified critical narrative that characterizes the theatre as …

Using Courts To Enforce The Free Speech Provisions Of The International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights, Ambika Kumar Jun 2006

Using Courts To Enforce The Free Speech Provisions Of The International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights, Ambika Kumar

Chicago Journal of International Law

According to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ("ICCPR" or "Covenant"), "[e]veryone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression." Over 150 countries have ratified this agreement, but dozens have neither signed, ratified nor enforced it. In some of these countries, there are few strong free speech advocates. In others, free speech lobbies have failed for a variety of reasons-government officials may believe they already allow important speech to exist without punishment, struggle to draft or implement legislation given the ambiguous contours of free speech, or face strong …

To Charge Or Not To Charge, That Is Discretion: The Problem Of Prosecutorial Discretion In Chile, And Japan's Solution, Kirtland C. Marsh Jun 2006

To Charge Or Not To Charge, That Is Discretion: The Problem Of Prosecutorial Discretion In Chile, And Japan's Solution, Kirtland C. Marsh

Washington International Law Journal

Chile’s recent criminal procedure reform is an ambitious program to bring greater transparency, fairness, and effectiveness to the country’s legal system. However, the success of the reform is not assured. To a great extent, the reform’s success will depend on the new national Office of the Public Prosecutor’s ability to enforce laws and direct law enforcement within the confines of the new system. Prosecutors must balance the interests of the Chilean public’s demands for order and convictions with the reform’s underlying principles of impartiality and enhanced rights for defendants. If prosecutors resort to the excesses used by investigating judges under …

The Uses Of History In The Supreme Court's Takings Clause Jurisprudence, Jonathan Lahn Jun 2006

The Uses Of History In The Supreme Court's Takings Clause Jurisprudence, Jonathan Lahn

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In a series of seminal cases interpreting the Fifth Amendment's Takings Clause, the United States Supreme Court has used arguments that can be called "historical" to justify its holdings and negotiate the relationship between the static language of the Constitution and the dynamic realities of American life. While historical arguments have been a recurring theme in Takings Clause jurisprudence over the past eighty years, the way in which they are used has shifted. While historical accounts of changes in American society over time once served to justify new forms of governmental intervention in the realm of private property, a new …

Making Main Street Legal Again: The Smartcode Solution To Sprawl, Chad D. Emerson Jun 2006

Making Main Street Legal Again: The Smartcode Solution To Sprawl, Chad D. Emerson

Missouri Law Review

This article will analyze the format of the SmartCode, and, since the SmartCode is only a model code that must be legally customized for local jurisdictions, the article will further explain the legal steps that communities must take in order to implement the SmartCode as a zoning option. While doing so, the article will examine how the strict Euclidean structure of today's conventional zoning codes has necessitated the creation of the SmartCode in order to allow communities to legally utilize traditional town and neighborhood planning techniques
