Public Health Versus Court-Sponsored Secrecy, Daniel J. Givelber, Anthony Robbins
Public Health Versus Court-Sponsored Secrecy, Daniel J. Givelber, Anthony Robbins
Law and Contemporary Problems
Public health practice relies on access to information. Givelber and Robbins discuss the debate about "court-sponsored" secrecy: Whether or not courts should tolerate, edorse, or protect secrecy when the sequestered information might help protect the public health.

No Direction Home: Will The Law Keep Pace With Human Tracking Technology To Protect Individual Privacy And Stop Geoslavery, William A. Herbert
No Direction Home: Will The Law Keep Pace With Human Tracking Technology To Protect Individual Privacy And Stop Geoslavery, William A. Herbert
Publications and Research
Increasingly, public and private employers are utilizing human tracking devices to monitor employee movement and conduct. Due to the propensity of American labor law to give greater weight toemployer property interests over most employee privacy expectations, there are currently few limitations on the use of human tracking in employment. The scope and nature of current legal principles regarding individual privacy are not sufficient to respond to the rapid development and use of human tracking technology. The academic use of the phrase “geoslavery” to describe the abusive use of such technology underscores its power. This article examines the use of such …

International Volunteerism In The United States, 2005, Benjamin Lough
International Volunteerism In The United States, 2005, Benjamin Lough
Center for Social Development Research
This working paper uses 2005 CPS data to describe the frequency of international volunteerism in the United States by select demographic characteristics and length of service abroad. Nearly one million individuals reported volunteering internationally at least once in 2005. Young or middle-aged college graduates with higher-incomes, employed full-time, and married without dependent children were the most frequent candidates for service abroad. The majority of volunteers spent two weeks or less overseas, and volunteered with a faith-based organization either domestically or internationally. Limitations in the data help identify areas needing further research.

Morar V. Idf Commander In Judaea And Samaria, Dorit Beinisch, Eliezer Rivlin, Salim Joubran
Translated Opinions
Facts: The petitioners, who represent five Arab villages in the territory of Judaea and Samaria, claimed that the respondents unlawfully deny Palestinian farmers in those villages access to their agricultural land. The petitioners also claimed that the respondents do not act to prevent attacks and harassment perpetrated by Israeli inhabitants of the territory of Judaea and Samaria against Palestinian farmers and do not enforce the law against the Israeli inhabitants. In reply, the respondents explained that the agricultural land was closed only when it was necessary to protect the Palestinian farmers from harassment by Israeli inhabitants. The respondents also notified …

Instrumental Intensity Scales For Geohazards, Steven Kramer, Sarah B. Upsall
Instrumental Intensity Scales For Geohazards, Steven Kramer, Sarah B. Upsall
Geohazards
The relationship between ground motion characteristics and geohazard-related earthquake damage was investigated for slope instability, lateral spreading, settlement, and buried pipeline damage, and the results used to develop two instrumental intensity scales. The scales are based on three velocity-related ground motion parameters that reflect the amplitude, frequency content, and duration of a ground motion. The scales provide intensity values that are strongly correlated to potential damage – one scale expresses intensity on a 0-10 scale and the other in terms of an apparent earthquake magnitude. The former is expected to be particularly useful for rapid identification of potential damaged areas …

3d Visualization For Urban Earthquake Risk, S. Kemec, S. Duzgun
Geohazards
Visualization is the graphical presentation of information, with the goal of improving the viewer’s understanding of the information contents. As today’s world is getting richer in information, visualization of the information is important for effective communication and decision making. In this study, generation of a 3D city model in CAD environment and its use in a spatial decision support system for earthquake risk in an urban area is presented. As CAD products’ quality is more enhanced than the other tools the 3D city model is generated in CAD environment. In CAD environment, a 2D building foot print vector layer is …
Quantitative Risk Assessment As Applied To Natural Terrain Landslide Hazard Management In A Mid-Levels Catchment, Hong Kong, Ian Muir, K. K. S. Ho, H. W. Sun, T. H. H. Hui, Y. C. Koo
Quantitative Risk Assessment As Applied To Natural Terrain Landslide Hazard Management In A Mid-Levels Catchment, Hong Kong, Ian Muir, K. K. S. Ho, H. W. Sun, T. H. H. Hui, Y. C. Koo
Geohazards
This paper presents a case study of the application of quantitative risk assessment techniques to a site-specific natural terrain hazard study in Hong Kong. The development of the landslide hazard and susceptibility models is described and salient details of the consequence model are given, including the assessment of debris flowpaths and runout using state-of-the-art Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and debris runout computer models. A synthesis of the risk quantification process and schematic design of risk mitigation works is presented.

Assessing The Safety Impacts Of Access Management Techniques, Jeff S. Lewis
Assessing The Safety Impacts Of Access Management Techniques, Jeff S. Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Access management techniques such as raised median installation and driveway consolidation improve safety conditions for motorists. Several locations where these access management techniques have been installed in the state of Utah were selected for analysis of the safety impacts. Although crash rates were not necessarily reduced as a result of the access management techniques, other safety improvements were observed. The raised medians generally reduced the more serious types of collisions, which resulted in a decrease in the severity of crashes. The fatality rates generally decreased as crashes became less severe. Because fatalities and the overall severity of crashes decreased, the …

French Revolution [10th Grade], Jenna Smith
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
The students will recognize that there are many different causes that can lead to a revolution. The students will know the different causes of the French Revolution and the effects of that revolution. The students will explore what the French citizens desired to gain from the revolution. There should be an understanding the results of a revolution may or may not have an effect on the lives of citizens. Revolutions do not always equal immediate progress, which is mirrored in the aftermath of the French Revolution. The performance assessment design will give the students to start a revolution where they …
