Mental Disorders Among Parents/Caretakers Of American Indian Early Adolescents In The Northern Midwest, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kurt Johnson, Xiaojin Chen

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Background: This study reports prevalence and comorbidty of five DSM-III-R diagnoses (alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, drug abuse, major depressive episode, and generalized anxiety disorder) among American Indian and Canadian First Nations parents/caretakers of children aged 10–12 years from the Northern Midwest United States and Canada. Lifetime prevalence rates were compared to adults in the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS) and Southwest and Northern Plains cultures from the AI-SUPERPFP study.

Method: Native interviewers used computer-assisted personal interviews to administer the University of Michigan Composite International Diagnostic Interview (UM-CIDI) to 861 tribally enrolled parents and caretakers (625 females; 236 males) of 741 tribally …

Mental Disorders, Comorbidity, And Postrunaway Arrests Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Xiaojin Chen, Lisa Thrane, Les B. Whitbeck, Kurt Johnson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study examined the associations between lifetime mental disorder, comorbidity, and self-reported postrunaway arrests among 428 (187 males, 241 females) homeless and runaway youth. The analysis examined the pattern of arrests across five lifetime mental disorders (alcohol abuse, drug abuse, conduct disorder, major depressive episode, and posttraumatic stress disorder). The adolescents, ranging from 16 to 19 years old, were interviewed directly on the streets and in shelters in four Midwestern states using computer-assisted personal interviewing. Extensive self-reports of early life history, behaviors since running away from home, and diagnostic interviewing (UM-CIDI and DISC-R) were used to estimate possible disorders. There …

Examining The Changing Influence Of Predictors On Adolescent Alcohol Misuse, Kimberly A. Tyler, Rosalie Torres Stone, Bianca Bersani Jan 2006

Examining The Changing Influence Of Predictors On Adolescent Alcohol Misuse, Kimberly A. Tyler, Rosalie Torres Stone, Bianca Bersani

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine whether the influence of key characteristics on adolescent alcohol misuse (is., maternal binge drinking, parenting, peers, school characteristics, and the adolescent's own behavior) change over time and whether predictors of adolescent alcohol misuse vary by gender and race/ethnicity. Using prospective, longitudinal data from a community sample, results revealed that mother's hinge drinking, peer drinking, and an early age of onset predicted higher levels of alcohol misuse when respondents were 14-16 years of age. Two years later, when adolescents were 16- 18 years of age, maternal binge drinking was no longer significant, however, …

The Impact Of Support Received And Support Provision On Changes In Perceived Social Support Among Older Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler Jan 2006

The Impact Of Support Received And Support Provision On Changes In Perceived Social Support Among Older Adults, Kimberly A. Tyler

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The current study uses longitudinal data from the 1993 U.S. Midwest floods to examine the influence of support received and support provision on changes in perceived social support among older adults exposed to an acute stressor. Results indicated that flood exposure and higher levels of social support at Time 1 were positively associated with both receiving social support and providing social support specific to the food. Individuals with higher levels of support provision and received support in turn reported higher levels of perceived support post disaster. Women were more likely to have received flood specific support and to have perceived …

Welfare Polls: A Synthesis, Matthew D. Adler Jan 2006

Welfare Polls: A Synthesis, Matthew D. Adler

Faculty Scholarship

"Welfare polls" are survey instruments that seek to quantify the determinants of human well-being. Currently, three welfare polling formats are dominant: contingent valuation (CV) surveys, quality-adjusted life year (QALY) surveys, and happiness surveys. Each format has generated a large, specialized, scholarly literature, but no comprehensive discussion of welfare polling as a general enterprise exists. This Article seeks to fill that gap.

Part I describes the trio of existing formats. Part II discusses the current and potential uses of welfare polls in governmental decisionmaking. Part III analyzes in detail the obstacles that welfare polls must overcome to provide useful well-being information, and …

The Marriage Moments Program For Couples Transitioning To Parenthood: Divergent Conclusions From Formative And Outcome Evaluation Data, Alan J. Hawkins, Elizabeth B. Fawcett, Jason S. Carroll, Tamara T. Gilliland Jan 2006

The Marriage Moments Program For Couples Transitioning To Parenthood: Divergent Conclusions From Formative And Outcome Evaluation Data, Alan J. Hawkins, Elizabeth B. Fawcett, Jason S. Carroll, Tamara T. Gilliland

Faculty Publications

This article presents the results of a pilot study of the Marriage Moments program, designed to prevent relationship deterioration during the 1st year of parenthood. The self-guided, low-intensity program emphasizes strengthening marital virtues and partnership during this time of significant personal and family transition. One hundred fifty-five married couples participated in a randomized clinical trial with 2 psychoeducational treatment groups (a self-guided group and an instructor-encouraged group) and a comparable control group. Despite positive formative evaluation results from program participants, hierarchical linear modeling analyses failed to find significant Group X Time differences on spouses' reports of marital virtues and a …

Learning Competent Fathering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Marital Intimacy And Fathering, Kay Bradford, Alan J. Hawkins Jan 2006

Learning Competent Fathering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Marital Intimacy And Fathering, Kay Bradford, Alan J. Hawkins

Faculty Publications

Although scholars have documented many links between marital relationships and parenting, these associations are not commonly explained in terms of behavior that is learned or achieved over time. This paper examines the idea that good fathering – conceptualized here as competent fathering – is the result of a developmental process, and that a loving, committed relationship between parents creates a context in which traits supportive of caring fathering are likely to be learned and practiced. After setting the stage conceptually, we provide a modest initial test of this hypothesis to discern the associations between three components of marital intimacy (emotional …

Professional Football Sponsorship In The English Premier League And The German Bundesliga, André Wolfgang Bühler Jan 2006

Professional Football Sponsorship In The English Premier League And The German Bundesliga, André Wolfgang Bühler

Plymouth Business School Theses

This research project looks at professional football sponsorship from three different perspectives: the clubs' perspective (sponsorship as an income stream for professional football clubs), the sponsors' perspective (sponsorship as a marketing tool for companies), and a joint perspective (sponsorship as an inter-organisational relationship between professional football clubs and their sponsors). The English Premier League and the German Bundesliga serve as the subject of research owing to their extraordinarily sound reputation in commercial terms. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods was used in order to answer the research questions which derived from an extensive literature review. First, qualitative in-depth …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Intercultural Sensitivity Of Student Affairs Practitioners At A Midwest Metropolitan University, Daniel Kent Kelso

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A focus on intercultural sensitivity in all areas of human endeavor is critical for future success at creating an enlightened and competent global citizenry. This is especially true for postsecondaryEducation. Very little research exists within the intercultural literature that addresses faculty or staff intercultural sensitivity within a college environment. Research is practically non-existent regarding the intercultural sensitivity of the student affairs practitioner. Specific challenges face college and university practitioners as they attempt to accomplish the diversity missions of their institutions. These challenges cannot be overcome unless those governing and manipulating higherEducation environments are themselves sensitive to cultural differences and possess …

Diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder: The Effect Of Therapists' Negative Emotional Reactions On Diagnostic Judgments, Keith Mayo Jan 2006

Diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder: The Effect Of Therapists' Negative Emotional Reactions On Diagnostic Judgments, Keith Mayo

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies suggest that clinicians are prone to bias in diagnosing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and that BPD symptoms elicit negative emotional reactions (NER) from clinicians. However, no studies have specifically examined the effect of NER on the diagnosis of BPD. This study examined the decision-making processes used when assigning a diagnosis of BPD, specifically, whether clinicians' NER towards patients exhibiting BPD symptoms bias decision-making and result in misuse of the BPD diagnosis. A randomly-selected national sample of 98 licensed psychologists completed an Internet survey in which they read two case vignettes that were designed to elicit NER but were …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher investigated the lived experience of counselingPsychology doctoral study through the perceptions of eight advanced students using a modified version of Seidman's (1998) phenomenological approach to interviewing and Colaizzi's (1978) phenomenological method of analysis. The findings of this study indicated that counselingPsychology doctoral study is a complex phenomenon involving numerous instances of challenge and change. Among these challenges is the overwhelming, all-encompassing and personally intrusive nature of counselingPsychology doctoral study. Changes discussed by the participants were both personal and professional in nature. Several changes, including personal and professional growth and the individualization of counselingPsychology doctoral study, constituted primary sources …

Parental Compliance To Clinical Recommendations In An Adhd Clinic, Alice Samantha Thibodeau Jan 2006

Parental Compliance To Clinical Recommendations In An Adhd Clinic, Alice Samantha Thibodeau

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychological assessments are a cornerstone of clinical practice inPsychology, but if results and recommendations are not used to guide treatment interventions, their value is greatly diminished. Currently, there is very little research that examines adherence to treatment recommendations given to parents or caregivers following psychological evaluations of their children. The present study expands on previous research (MacNaughton & Rodrigue, 2001) examining perceived barriers to parental compliance with psychological assessment recommendations by considering the impact of severity of child behavior problems and parenting stress on compliance. Eighty caregiver/child dyads were recruited through an ADHD evaluation clinic and caregivers completed a telephone …

The Effects Of Professional Development To Create Standards -Based Curriculum On Student Achievement In Fourth And Fifth Grade Mathematics Classrooms, Martin Amy Mcbride

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics determined there were several concepts or standards” needed for quality teaching of math While few dispute their importance, little support and resources are provided to help teachers understand and meet these standards. Long term professional development which focuses on how to teach with these standards could play a crucial role in improving the academic achievement of students. In this study, professional development opportunities were provided for teachers to explore the various elements of mathematics and develop a better understanding of how to teach them. The main purpose of the research was to study …

The Role Of Sexual Attitudes In Sexual Dysfunction For A Clinic -Referred Sample Of Women Veteran Sexual Trauma Victims, Claudia P. Chavez Jan 2006

The Role Of Sexual Attitudes In Sexual Dysfunction For A Clinic -Referred Sample Of Women Veteran Sexual Trauma Victims, Claudia P. Chavez

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined whether sexual attitudes make a significant contribution to sexual dysfunction that cannot be accounted for solely by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related symptom severity. Archival data were drawn from a clinic-referred sample of 100 women veterans with histories of sexual trauma. Participants completed several paper-pencil questionnaires including the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40), Sexual Desire Conflict Scale for Women (SDCS), and the Sex Role Questionnaire (SRQ) in order to assess PTSD-related symptom severity, sexual dysfunction, and sexual attitudes, respectively. It was hypothesized that PTSD-related symptom severity would be positively correlated with sexual dysfunction and that sexual attitudes would …

Well Siblings Of Children With Type-I Diabetes, Amber Lee Cadick Jan 2006

Well Siblings Of Children With Type-I Diabetes, Amber Lee Cadick

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The well siblings of children with chronic diseases are often overlooked by treatment providers. A retrospective qualitative approach was used to explore the childhood and adult experiences of well siblings of people with Type-I Diabetes. The participants were over 18-years-old, lived in the Midwest, and were raised with a sibling with Type-I Diabetes. A number of themes emerged from the data. The participants tended to utilize solution-focused, action-oriented coping strategies, for example, caretaking and increasing their knowledge about the disease. Stressors included experiencing the ill siblings' mood swings, a concern about their siblings' health, as well as a concern for …

Intuition And Correspondence Between Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem, Mervyn Lee Whitfield Jan 2006

Intuition And Correspondence Between Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem, Mervyn Lee Whitfield

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Implicit self-esteem has recently been the focus of much research. Implicit self-esteem is distinct from explicit self-esteem and uniquely contributes to the prediction of behaviour. Relatively little is known about the nature of implicit self-esteem, however. This research examines moderators of the relation between implicit self-esteem and self-reports of self-esteem. A stronger focus on intuition was expected to increase the relation between implicit self-esteem and self-reports of self-esteem. Study 1 concerned whether high faith in intuition was associated with self-reports of self-esteem that more closely reflect implicit self-esteem. Implicit self-esteem, explicit self-esteem, and faith in intuition were measured. This study …

The Development Of Wheel-Induced Feeding Suppression In Male And Female Rats, Olivia Dalton-Jez Jan 2006

The Development Of Wheel-Induced Feeding Suppression In Male And Female Rats, Olivia Dalton-Jez

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Access to a running wheel causes a feeding suppression in adult rats (Afonso & Eikelboom, 2003) but it appears this wheel induced feeding suppression is not evident in weanlings (Cortright, Chandler, Lemon, and DiCarlo, 1997). This ad lib wheel and food model (ALWF) has been suggested as an animal model of anorexia nervosa (AN). Two characteristic features of AN are the disorder's very specific age of onset and the marked sex difference in incidence, with the majority of cases first becoming evident in females during puberty. It is not clear how much of the genesis of and expression of this …

High-Risk Sexual Behaviour, Computer Experience And The Internet, Amanda E. Nosko Jan 2006

High-Risk Sexual Behaviour, Computer Experience And The Internet, Amanda E. Nosko

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study examined the relationships between computer use, sexually explicit material found on the Internet, and sexual attitudes and behaviours and the use of the Internet for conducting large surveys. The first issue explored if and how computer experience contributed to online behaviour and perceptions about sexually explicit material. In addition, sexual attitudes and behaviours were examined with respect to computer experience to assess potential relationships. The methodological question contrasted the use of traditional supervised paper-and-pencil survey techniques with supervised and unsupervised use of the Internet. This design allowed for comparison of use as a function of supervision and format …

Listening To The Voices Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids: A Qualitative Study Of Psychosocial Impact And Quality Of Life Issues, Edna Aryee Jan 2006

Listening To The Voices Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids: A Qualitative Study Of Psychosocial Impact And Quality Of Life Issues, Edna Aryee

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In spite of the increasing number of women infected with HIV around the world, little is known about the psychosocial experiences of these women. In the mid-1990s, medical advances dramatically altered the experiences of living with HIV/AIDS. The shifting medical climate raised new social and psychological questions such as coping strategies and the possibility of gaining access to resources and services in the community. In this qualitative study, I examined how 5 women living with HIV/AIDS in Southern Ontario deal with their daily psychosocial needs and challenges. Based on a life history methodology, responses of participants were coded and analyzed …

Longing To Be Heard: Examining Sense Of Community And Participation Through The Voices Of Youth, Marcie D. Mckay Jan 2006

Longing To Be Heard: Examining Sense Of Community And Participation Through The Voices Of Youth, Marcie D. Mckay

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Youth often feel powerless and alienated in their communities and have expressed that they are not seen as contributing citizens. This study investigates the relation between sense of community and participation of youth aged 12-15 residing in a disadvantaged Atlantic Canadian community. The research design is a one-group, pre/post-test survey, and an intervention. The intervention is the formation of a youth action committee (YAC) from a self-selected stratified sample (N=36) drawn from randomly selected classrooms within three schools. The YAC worked collectively on a number of issues in their community using an action model. Results highlight the concerns and outcomes …

Gambling For Certainty: Luck, Chance, And Uncertainty In Politics, Mindy Peden, Nicole M. Elias Jan 2006

Gambling For Certainty: Luck, Chance, And Uncertainty In Politics, Mindy Peden, Nicole M. Elias

Publications and Research

How much of what we do is the result of our will, and how much the result of chance or luck or fortune? This is a decidedly un-decidable question, but one that needs to be asked. The general assumption seems to be that a person's "lot" in life is physically, morally, politically, even romantically linked to choice. But the use of the term "lot" betrays the underlying uncertainty of what "causes" our "lot", laying bare questions of responsibility, burden, and even explanation. Much (perhaps at the very least 50% according to Machiavelli) of what happens in our lives can be …

Friends' Religiosity And First Sex, Amy Adamczyk, Jacob Felson Jan 2006

Friends' Religiosity And First Sex, Amy Adamczyk, Jacob Felson

Publications and Research

Researchers have established that individual religiosity influences sexual behavior and that religious support can increase consistency between personal religiosity and behavior. Researchers are less certain, however, of the effect that religious friendship networks have on sexual behavior. In addition, the effects of network characteristics such as density and one’s position in a social network have not been established. This paper uses a network subsample of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to examine the effect of friends’ religiosity on the probability of first sex. We find that friends’ religiosity has an independent influence on adolescent sexual behavior …

Journal Use By Graduate Students As Indicated By Masters’ Theses Bibliographies At An Urban Commuter College, 1991-2004., Ellen A. Sexton

Publications and Research

Citation analyses were carried out on master’s thesis in three disciplines, forensic psychology, forensic science and criminal justice, completed and deposited in John Jay library from 1991 to 2004. The aim was to determine the effect of availability of electronic journals on students’ choice of references. The number of journal citations and the ratio of journal articles to all citations was assessed. Criminal justice theses listed more citations that either science of psychology theses, but relatively fewer journal articles. An increase over time was seen in the number of journal articles cited and in the ratio of journal articles to …

Filmmaking In The Precinct House And The Genre Of Documentary Film, Jessica Silbey Jan 2006

Filmmaking In The Precinct House And The Genre Of Documentary Film, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores side-by-side two contemporary and related film trends: the recent popular enthusiasm over the previously arty documentary film and the mandatory filming of custodial interrogations and confessions.

The history and criticism of documentary film, indeed contemporary movie-going, understands the documentary genre as political and social advocacy (recent examples are Michael Moore's Farenheit 9/11 and Errol Morris's Fog of War). Judges, advocates, and legislatures, however, assume that films of custodial interrogations and confessions reveal a truth and lack a distorting point of view. As this Article explains, the trend at law, although aimed at furthering venerable criminal justice principles, …

The Moderating Effect Of Judge’S Instructions On Victim Impact Testimony In Capital Cases, Judith Platania, Garrett Berman Jan 2006

The Moderating Effect Of Judge’S Instructions On Victim Impact Testimony In Capital Cases, Judith Platania, Garrett Berman

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

In this study, we addressed whether victim impact instructions served as a legal safeguard in a capital case involving victim impact testimony. We hypothesized that specific victim impact instructions would moderate the relation between victim impact testimony and death penalty recommendations. One hundred sixty-six participants viewed a simulated videotaped trial in which a victim impact statement was delivered in different emotional conditions. Judge’s instructions were varied as either general instructions or with the addition of specific victim impact instructions. Participant-jurors who heard specific victim impact instructions were less likely to recommend death compared to participants who heard general jury instructions. …
