In this article, the authors describe a mixed-methods study designed to explore perceived family support, acculturation, and life satisfaction among 266 Mexican American adolescents. Specifically, the authors conducted a thematic analysis of open-ended responses to a question about life satisfaction to understand participants’ perceptions of factors that contributed to their overall satisfaction with life. The authors also conducted hierarchical regression analyses to investigate the independent and interactive contributions of perceived support from family and Mexican and Anglo acculturation orientations on life satisfaction. Convergence of mixed-methods findings demonstrated that perceived family support and Mexican orientation were significant predictors of life satisfaction …

Policy Analysis Of The Victim Offender Restitution Program, Veronica Damon, Marie Bostick, Lamont Mcgary

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Both the criminal justice and the juvenile justice systems have experienced increased strain due to criminal acts committed by juveniles. Many experts suggest that one way to ease the burden of the courts can be found in the theory of restorative justice. Most often the juvenile justice system is most concerned with the risk and needs of youthful offenders without significant consideration for the victims. A key component in the restorative justice theory is victim offender mediation which seeks to reduce the impact of crime on victims and the community. Clark County, Nevada has one such program, the Victim Offender …

Linking The World Of The Policy-Maker To That Of The Change-Agent In Educational Change, Chi Hong Nguyen Jul 2006

Linking The World Of The Policy-Maker To That Of The Change-Agent In Educational Change, Chi Hong Nguyen

Essays in Education

Policy cannot “mandate what matters”. In fact, policy in educational reform can set a general direction and framework, but it is local implementation that produces real outcomes. It is important to change the core of schooling or teachers’ deep beliefs in teaching practices, their values, and basic assumptions. Changing organizational culture can bring deeper forms of change that helps the organization survive and grow. This article, which stresses the importance of organizational culture in school change, is based on five arguments. First, taking a post-modernist standpoint, the paper argues that change is itself a complex process. Second, as change doers, …

Training Impact Analysis - Applying The Modified Combined Model Of Kirkpatrick’S And Phillips’ Training Evaluation To Measure The Training Impact, Toshio Fujita

Business Review

The most difficult area in practicing the effective training has been the establishment of practical model to enable to quantify the impact of training. No doubt, without the relevant evaluation of the Training Impact, the implementation of effective training, on which the organizational sustainability and success depend, would be totally unfeasible. Author has long been concerned with the lasting consequences of its effect. Significance of it is multiplied in the Public Sector which has even wider social ramifications. The concern was culminated when author encountered the comment made by Mr. Hamdi Al-Taba’a, Chairman of the Jordanian Business Association on January …

Knowledge Entrepreneurship: A New Paradigm For Organizational Performance, S.M Taha

Business Review

Last decade of the twentieth century experienced cataclysmic changes in organizations’ structure and their performance. Organizations are now considered as sentient being. They think through their systems; they plan through their functionaries; they perform through their resources (human and capital assets). Now they have become a basic building bloc of our today’s corporate world. We can list several themes that brought changes in culture, design and environment of contemporary organizations all over the world. These include: globalization, interdependence and free markets economy. These trends forced countries and organizations to reshape their economic and business strategies. One factor, however that can …

Measurement Of Valuing Diversity: A Multidimensional Conception And Confirmatory Analysis, Rebekka A. Althouse

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the construct validity of the Attitudes Toward Diversity Scale (ATDS; Montei et al., 1996) in relation to the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (SEE; Wang et al., 2003) and the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale (M-GUDS; Miville et al., 1999) in a sample of 157 undergraduate and graduate students at Old Dominion University. Because there was no precedent in the literature, a purely theoretical relationship was hypothesized. The relationship between the SEE and the ATDS v as hypothesized to be stronger than between the M-GUDS and the ATDS. A multivariate structural model tested the hypothesized pattern of relationships emanating from …

A Study Of Literacy Efficacy And Student Achievement Among Beginning Middle School Teachers In An Urban Context, Michael J. Mustain

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Many U.S. school districts are addressing concerns in the areas of literacy education, teacher shortages, and overall student achievement. Teacher preparation in the area of literacy education and the ability of core subject teachers to include literacy components in their daily lessons appears vital to student achievement. Teacher shortages, particularly in high need, "hard to staff'' urban schools, are a serious problem that alternative preparation programs help to address. Alternative preparation programs can provide highly qualified teachers in urban schools. The Transition to Teaching (TTT) trained teachers provided literacy education that in turn helped improve benchmark tests, end-of-year tests, cumulative …

Racial, Cultural And Sociopolitical Disparities In Mental Health Administration In The United States, Dianne Williams Jun 2006

Racial, Cultural And Sociopolitical Disparities In Mental Health Administration In The United States, Dianne Williams

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Despite significant advances in the health care industry, recent research has revealed alarming disparities in the availability, access, and quality of health care for minorities. According to the 2001 Surgeon General’s report published by the USDHHS, even if minority groups have comparable access, socioeconomic status and insurance coverage, they are still likely to receive less, or inferior care. This paper discusses the concept of culturally sensitive mental health counseling and its feasibility, in light of the monocultural manner in which cultural and criminal subgroups are typically handled.

Managing Perplexing Congregations: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Church In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan Jun 2006

Managing Perplexing Congregations: The Case Of Chinese Protestant Church In North America, Siu-Hang P. Chan

Student Scholarship

How religious congregations adapt to change determines whether they will continue to thrive (Ammerman, 1997). Chinese immigrant religious organizations in America face a built-in clash between the generations of Overseas-Born Chinese (OBC) and American-Born Chinese (ABC) that is most visible in their religious congregations (Ling & Cheuk, 1999). This study identifies how Chinese congregations develop interpretive schemes (Bartunek, 1984) that help bridge the generational transition and lead to successful adaptation or its hindrance.

Scale Development And Construct Clarification Of Servant Leadership, John E. Barbuto, Daniel W. Wheeler

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This article presents an integrated construct of servant leadership derived from a review of the literature. Subscale items were developed to measure 11 potential dimensions of servant leadership: calling, listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, growth, and community building. Data from 80 leaders and 388 raters were used to test the internal consistency, confirm factor structure, and assess convergent, divergent, and predictive validity. Results produced five servant leadership factors—altruistic calling, emotional healing, persuasive mapping, wisdom, and organizational stewardship— with significant relations to transformational leadership, leader-member exchange, extra effort, satisfaction, and organizational effectiveness. Strong factor structures and good performance …

Recent Trends In Basic Science Department Reorganizations, Sarah A. Bunton

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The past several decades have seen a rapid and profound expansion of knowledge within the biomedical sciences. Achievements in molecular biology, human genetics, and neuroscience, among others, have contributed to the realization that the complexity of science now lends itself to interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts. This transformation of biomedical science has led to questions regarding the organization of academic departments in U.S. medical schools around traditional basic science disciplines. Some have proposed that the discipline-based department impedes scientific progress and a new structure that breaks down boundaries is needed. Others believe that traditional basic science departments continue to foster valuable …

Job Insecurity And Work-Family Conflict: The Organizational, Situational, And Individual Influences On The Job Strain Process, Khatera Sahibzada

Dissertations and Theses

Globalization, new technologies, downsizing, and a shift from manufacturing to service-based economies have led to an increase in job insecurity, resulting in deleterious effects on employee work attitudes and behaviors. However, the literature has failed to examine the impact of job insecurity on work-family outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between job insecurity and work-family conflict. The specific research questions addressed were: (a) does job strain mediate the relationship between job insecurity and work-family conflict? and (b) is the relationship between job insecurity and work-family conflict moderated by individual, situational and organizational perceptions? …

An Investigation Of Gender Differences In Motivation Of Senior Administrators In Virginia Community Colleges Using Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory., Jewell Bevins Worley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender differences regarding motivation in the individuals who serve in senior administrative positions in Virginia's community colleges. Institutional morale can be damaged by administrators who become dissatisfied with their positions. Institutions use millions of dollars yearly to conduct searches for individuals to replace senior administrators who leave their positions because of lack of job satisfaction or high job dissatisfaction. This study also addressed the possibility of differences between male senior administrators and female senior administrators regarding job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction.

Frederick Herzberg' 2-factory theory of motivation regarding job satisfaction and …

Superintendents ’ Perceptions Of Clinical Supervision Practices In A District-Wide Implementation Program, Myrna Rae Ladner Bourgeois May 2006

Superintendents ’ Perceptions Of Clinical Supervision Practices In A District-Wide Implementation Program, Myrna Rae Ladner Bourgeois

Dissertations

In 1990 a new idea swept through the educational industry. Forty-nine school districts in Pennsylvania instituted a new form of organizational management called clinical supervision. In effect, this was a change in the relationship between administration and teachers concerning instructional behaviors. Formerly, when teachers were supervised and evaluated by administrators, they felt intimidated. They also felt their privacy was being invaded. Clinical supervision is an attempt to organize the methodology of teacher supervision while improving instruction. The purpose of this study was to provide data to the participating school districts for use in developing supervision, evaluation, and involvement training modification …

Cultures have varying notions about symptom expression and the treatment of mental health issues. Consequently, clients and psychotherapists may or may not share a similar worldview. In the psychotherapy literature there has been increased attention to these complex processes. This survey descriptive study aims to understand how therapists working with culturally diverse clients incorporate sensitivity to cultural differences. Fifteen culturally sensitive mental health care providers working with the Portuguese immigrant community were interviewed about their practices. Specifically, we investigated their understanding of the symptoms, causes and cures for agonias, a culture specific phenomenon. It was found that even though …

Adaptational Proximity And The Innovation Process: An End-User Focus, Robert M. Krug May 2006

Adaptational Proximity And The Innovation Process: An End-User Focus, Robert M. Krug

Student Scholarship

Organizations promote widely ranging workplace programs and initiatives with the goal of instituting change or maintaining previously adopted change. Often these programs and initiatives are designed to establish global standards through consistent member behavior. Using data from over 400 members of diverse organizations, this study examines several factors that affect program commitment and usage. Drawing upon innovation theory, I focus on the concept of end-user adaptation, or, as used herein, adaptation proximal activities. With regard to this mechanism, I propose and establish the mediating role that personal engagement plays in employee propensity to adopt adaptation proximal activities with regard to …

Individuals of different generations share some values and beliefs, but they also vary in their perceptions regarding their work environments. It is a challenge for managers to create environments in which all staff members feel welcome and appreciated, a situation. which ultimately leads to decreased turnover, increased productivity, and a high quality of patient care. Methods: Survey packets (n = 850) were distributed to all RNs employed at an acute care hospital. To assess RNs' perceptions …
