The Relationship Among Wellness, Severity Of Disturbance, And Social Desirability Of Entering Master's-Level Counseling Students, Heather Smith Jan 2006

The Relationship Among Wellness, Severity Of Disturbance, And Social Desirability Of Entering Master's-Level Counseling Students, Heather Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A wellness paradigm may hold promise for unifying and strengthening the identity of the counseling profession. The construct of wellness may also hold implications for assessment of entering master's-level counseling students, as a tool for continuous evaluation of students, or for overall program evaluation. In this study, the only counseling-based wellness assessment measure, the Five Factor Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle, was tested for its relationship to two other constructs: psychological disturbance and social desirability. In order to test the research hypotheses, a total of nine programs (in five states) and 204 entering master's-level counseling students completed instrumentation packets comprised of …

Minority Physician Job Satisfaction: A Content Analysis Of Written Responses To Open-Ended Survey Questions About Professional A, Devorah Daniels-Kranz Jan 2006

Minority Physician Job Satisfaction: A Content Analysis Of Written Responses To Open-Ended Survey Questions About Professional A, Devorah Daniels-Kranz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Few interpersonal and organizational communication studies examine the professional and organizational aspects of career satisfaction among minority physicians. Due to the underrepresenation of minority physicians, most studies resort to comparing aggregate groups of minority physicians in juxtaposition to non-minority physicians. These studies fail to uncover possible communication differences, which originate from cultural dissimilarities between disaggregate racial/ethnic groups. Even fewer studies examine physicians' written communication to open-ended survey questions about career satisfaction/dissatisfaction between disaggregate racial/ethnic minority groups and non-minorities. This study specifically examines written responses to two open-ended survey questions about professional and organizational dissatisfaction and compares responses from disaggregate minority …

Impaired Glutamate Transport In A Mouse Model Of Tau Pathology In Astrocytes, Deepa V. Dabir Jan 2006

Impaired Glutamate Transport In A Mouse Model Of Tau Pathology In Astrocytes, Deepa V. Dabir

Biology Faculty Works

Filamentous tau inclusions in neurons and glia are neuropathological hallmarks of tauopathies. The discovery of microtubule-associated protein tau gene mutations that are pathogenic for a heterogenous group of neurodegenerative disorders, called frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome-17 (FTDP-17), directly implicate tau abnormalities in the onset/progression of disease. Although the role of tau pathology in neurons in disease pathogenesis is well accepted, the contribution of glial pathology is essentially unknown. We recently generated a transgenic (Tg) mouse model of tau pathology in astrocytes by expressing the human tau protein under the control of the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promoter. …

Stochastic Simulation Of Soil Water Status On Reclaimed Land In Northern Alberta Jan 2006

Stochastic Simulation Of Soil Water Status On Reclaimed Land In Northern Alberta

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Studies of spatial variability and simulation of available soil water and extractable soil water are scarce and yet such data are essential in hydrologic and solute transport modeling. A study was conducted to characterize spatial variability of available soil water and extractable soil water on a reclaimed site in northern Alberta. The vegetation on site included grasses, legumes and shrubs. The site was reclaimed and the reconstructed profile was made up of 40-100 cm of clay loam/peat material overlying fine tailings sand. Soil water was measured using neutron moisture meters on a frequency of approximately two weeks during the growing …

Who Is The Child Left Behind? The Racial Meaning Of The New School Reform, Charles R. Lawrence Iii Jan 2006

Who Is The Child Left Behind? The Racial Meaning Of The New School Reform, Charles R. Lawrence Iii

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Segregated schools achieve their racist purpose by building a wall between poor black and brown children and those of us with privilege, influence, and power. It does not matter that this wall is not built pursuant to the mandate of law or that it is created by the cumulative effect of our private choices. It is segregation nonetheless and it encourages us to hoard our wealth on one side of the wall while children on the other side are left with little. The genius of segregation as a tool of oppression is in the signal it sends to the oppressor …

Acidification And Nutrient Cycling, Mary Beth Adams, William T. Peterjohn, Frank S. Gilliam Jan 2006

Acidification And Nutrient Cycling, Mary Beth Adams, William T. Peterjohn, Frank S. Gilliam

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Additions of acid anions can alter the cycling of other nutrients and elements within an ecosystem. As strong acid ions move through a forest, they may increase the concentrations of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) in the soil solution and stream water. Such treatments also may increase or decrease the availability of other anions, cations and metal ions in the soil. A number of studies in Europe and North America have documented increases in base cation concentrations such as calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) with increased N and S deposition (Foster and Nicolson 1988, Feger 1992, Norton et al. 1994, …

Inhibition Of Hormone Dependent And Independent Breast Cancer Cells By Oyster(Crassostrea Virginica) Ceramide, Madhavi Chintalapati Jan 2006

Inhibition Of Hormone Dependent And Independent Breast Cancer Cells By Oyster(Crassostrea Virginica) Ceramide, Madhavi Chintalapati

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this research was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo anti-angiogenic properties of ceramide isolated from oyster (Crassostrea virginica). Ceramide was isolated from oyster by silicic acid chromatography, purified by alkaline hydrolysis, and analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In vitro, the activity of ceramide on human hormone-dependent (MCF-7) and hormone-independent (MDA-MB-435s) breast cancer cells was evaluated for cell viability and proliferation, VEGF-induced cell migration and invasion, apoptosis, and autophagy. The activity of ceramide was also evaluated for VEGF-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) tube formation. The protein levels of vascular endothelial growth factor …

Community-Based Learning: Engaging Students For Success And Citizenship, Atelia Melaville, Amy C. Berg, Martin J. Blank

Partnerships/Community

In recent years, national tragedies—both man-made and natural—have forced Americans to see how much we rely on strong neighborhoods, communities, and democratic institutions. We’ve seen how lack of attention to their well being affects us all. These events lay bare the moral imperative that underlies the mission of public education—to develop active, engaged citizens who are able to participate in and contribute fully to a democratic society.

Feather Mites Are Positively Associated With Daily Survival In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Kathleen R. Brazeal, Stephanie A. Strickler, Mary Bomberger Brown Jan 2006

Feather Mites Are Positively Associated With Daily Survival In Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Kathleen R. Brazeal, Stephanie A. Strickler, Mary Bomberger Brown

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Feather mites (Acari: Astigmata) have been reported to be parasitic, commensal, and even mutualis-tic on the birds that serve as their hosts. We investigated whether there was a relationship between number of feather mites (Pteronyssoides obscurus (Berlese, 1885)) on the wing and daily survival of cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota (Vieillot, 1817)) during the breeding season at 12 nesting colonies in Nebraska in 2005. Survival of birds with known mite loads was monitored by mark–recapture, and survival models with and without a linear effect of mites were compared with the program MARK. For adult swallows, mites were positively associated …

Growing A Better Food System: An Analysis Of The Impact Of California School Gardens On The Sustainable Food And Food Security Movements, Michael Press

Pomona Senior Theses

In recent decades, environmental problems associated with conventional agriculture, children’s nutrition, and concern over the adequacy of the current food supply have led to the emergence of the sustainable food and food security movements. These issues have also inspired the state of California to pass legislation to place a garden in every school in the state. This thesis analyzes the accuracy of this policy’s implementation and its effects on the sustainable food and food security movements. Research found that the loss of state funding for this policy and the administrative, logistical, and informational barriers to establishing garden education programs has …

Molecular And Biochemical Changes In The Ileum Of Weanling Pigs Fed Antibiotics As Growth Promotant And In Germ-Free Conditions, Sajan George Jan 2006

Molecular And Biochemical Changes In The Ileum Of Weanling Pigs Fed Antibiotics As Growth Promotant And In Germ-Free Conditions, Sajan George

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotics are routinely fed as growth promoters to weanling pigs for the past 50 years. However, frequent use of feed antibiotics potentially results in emergence of drug resistance in microbes, which could be transferred to human pathogens and would interfere with the effective use of therapeutic antimicrobials in human medicine. Such health concerns about the use of antibiotics in animal feeds have led to considerable scientific research and debates. Recently, use of antibiotics in animal feeds has been banned in the European Union and would possibly impact US agriculture soon. This study was conducted to understand the molecular mechanisms of …

The Perils Of Risk Avoidance, Catherine O'Neill Jan 2006

The Perils Of Risk Avoidance, Catherine O'Neill

Faculty Articles

This article illustrates that in managing the risks and responding to the harms of environmental contamination, there has been a recent embrace of strategies involving risk avoidance in lieu of risk reduction. Risk reduction strategies aim to clean up, limit, or prevent environmental contamination in the first place. Risk avoidance strategies, by contrast, leave contamination unabated. Risk avoidance strategies address the harms of contamination by requiring those whose circumstances or lifeways leave them exposed to alter their ways, thereby "avoiding" the risk. A recent turn to risk avoidance is problematic on several scores and particularly troubling from the perspective of …

Intellectual Property And The Development Divide, Margaret Chon Jan 2006

Intellectual Property And The Development Divide, Margaret Chon

Faculty Articles

This article attempts to map the challenges raised by recent encounters between intellectual property and development. It proposes a normative principle of global intellectual property - one that is responsive to development paradigms that have moved far beyond simple utilitarian measures of social welfare. Recent insights from the field of development economics suggest strongly that intellectual property should include a substantive equality principle, measuring its welfare-generating outcomes not only by economic growth but also by distributional effects. A new principle of substantive equality is a necessary corollary to the formal equality principles of national treatment and minimum standards that are …

Markets, Monocultures, And Malnutrition: Agricultural Trade Policy Through An Environmental Justice Lens, Carmen Gonzalez Jan 2006

Markets, Monocultures, And Malnutrition: Agricultural Trade Policy Through An Environmental Justice Lens, Carmen Gonzalez

Faculty Articles

Much of the literature on environmental justice struggles in the United States and in the Global South has highlighted the disproportionate concentration of environmental hazards in poor communities and communities of color. However, it is equally important to evaluate how human societies distribute access to environmental necessities, such as food and water. Food is a quintessential environmental necessity that is critical human survival, and the right to food is recognized under a variety of international human rights law instruments. This article examines the complex ways in which the rules governing international trade in agricultural products affect the fundamental human right …

A STUDY OF THE DECISION TO REMOVE CHILDREN FROM THEIR PARENTS BY CHILD WELFARE SUPERVISORS

by Charles F. Lorbeer

Dissertation Chair: Dr. Aqueil Ahmad

Committee Members: Dr. Aqueil Ahmad, Dr. Robert Butters, and Dr. Ashakant Nimbark,

The goal of this study was to analyze the decision by child welfare supervisors to remove children from their parents. This was accomplished by studying the effect that three specific factors have on that decision. The three factors were 1) physical abuse, 2) domestic violence and substance abuse, and 3) availability of services to help the family.

Decision theory provided the conceptual framework for …

Is It Sometimes Good To Run Budget Deficits? If So, Should We Admit It (Out Loud)?, Neil H. Buchanan Jan 2006

Is It Sometimes Good To Run Budget Deficits? If So, Should We Admit It (Out Loud)?, Neil H. Buchanan

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

There are bad deficits and there are good deficits. What makes a fiscal deficit good or bad depends on both the context in which the deficit is run and the reason that the deficit is rising. The belief that it is unquestionably foolish to adopt policies that directly or indirectly increase the government's annual borrowing on the financial markets - which is what it means to run a budget deficit - is not the universal truth that the current conventional wisdom might imply. Budget deficits are potentially dangerous and must be monitored carefully, but they are not always, inevitably, completely, …
