Publications and Research

Exposure to manganese via inhalation has long been known to elicit neurotoxicity in adults, but little is known about possible consequences of exposure via drinking water. In this study, we report results of a cross-sectional investigation of intellectual function in 142 10-year-old children in Araihazar, Bangladesh, who had been consuming tube-well water with an average concentration of 793 μg Mn/L and 3 μg arsenic/L. Children and mothers came to our field clinic, where children received a medical examination in which weight, height, and head circumference were measured. Children’s intellectual function was assessed on tests drawn from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale …

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Concentration Of Dried Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Phosphorus Balance In Finishing Steers, Clint Benson, Cody Wright, Josh Mccarthick, Robbi Pritchard Jan 2006

Effect Of Increasing Dietary Concentration Of Dried Distillers Grains Plus Solubles On Phosphorus Balance In Finishing Steers, Clint Benson, Cody Wright, Josh Mccarthick, Robbi Pritchard

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Eight crossbred steers (initial BW = 972.2 ± 33.5 lb) were used in a replicated Latin square design to determine the effect of increasing dietary concentrations of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) on phosphorus (P) balance in finishing steers. The control (CON) diet contained 79% dry rolled corn (DRC), 10% cottonseed hulls, 6% soybean meal (SBM), and 5% mineral supplement (total diet P concentration = 0.26%). In each of the remaining three diets, all of the SBM and a portion of the DRC were removed and replaced with DDGS at 12%, 24%, and 36% of the diet (total diet …

Revisiting The Elitist Economy Of Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jan 2006

Revisiting The Elitist Economy Of Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Several observers and media persons have asked me to update on the latest assessment of my thesis propounded in the book " Pakistan : The Economy of an elitist state. " They are interested in exploring the question whether the polices and programs pursued during the last six years have made any dent on the elitist model of the economy that I had put forward in February, 1999 or not.

As I was one of the players involved in the economic management of the country it is natural that my perspective would be highly subjective. But it is equally incumbent …

Plasma Ldl And Hdl Characteristics And Carotenoid Content Are Positively Influenced By Egg Consumption In An Elderly Population, Christine M Greene, David Waters, Richard M Clark, John H Contois, Maria Luz Fernandez

Nutrition Articles

BACKGROUND : Approximately 1/3 of individuals have a high plasma response to dietary cholesterol (hyper-responders). Although increases in both LDL and HDL cholesterol have been observed, limited data exist regarding effects of egg consumption on lipoprotein subclasses and circulating carotenoids. METHODS : 29 postmenopausal women (50-68 y) and 13 men (60-80 y) were assigned to either 3 eggs (EGG, 640 mg cholesterol/d) or an equal volume of cholesterol-free egg substitute (SUB, 0 mg cholesterol/d) for 30 d. Following a 3 wk wash out, subjects crossed over to the alternate diet. Individuals with a response to dietary cholesterol > 2.2 mg/dL for …

Physiological Effects On Demography: A Long‐Term Experimental Study Of Testosterone’S Effects On Fitness, W. Reed, M. Clark, P. Parker, S. Raouf, N. Arguedas, D. Monk, E. Snajdr, V. Nolan, E. Ketterson

Biology Department Faculty Works

Understanding physiological and behavioral mechanisms underlying the diversity of observed life‐history strategies is challenging because of difficulties in obtaining long‐term measures of fitness and in relating fitness to these mechanisms. We evaluated effects of experimentally elevated testosterone on male fitness in a population of dark‐eyed juncos studied over nine breeding seasons using a demographic modeling approach. Elevated levels of testosterone decreased survival rates but increased success of producing extra‐pair offspring. Higher overall fitness for testosterone‐treated males was unexpected and led us to consider indirect effects of testosterone on offspring and females. Nest success was similar for testosterone‐treated and control males, …

Farmers In The Ip Wrench - How Patents On Gene-Modified Crops Violate The Right To Food In Developing Countries, Peter Straub Jan 2006

Farmers In The Ip Wrench - How Patents On Gene-Modified Crops Violate The Right To Food In Developing Countries, Peter Straub

UC Law SF International Law Review

Patented gene-modified crop seeds have a growing impact on how farming is done in the countries where they are sold and used. Modem patent regimes make all plants and plant material containing modified gene-material subject to the intellectual property rights of transnational corporations. Farmers are then faced with the choice of either entering into licensing agreements, or becoming patent infringers-with all the legal consequences-by marketing the fruits of their labor. This article examines how socioeconomic rights-especially the right to food as defined by Article 11.2 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR)-of small-hold subsistence farmers in …

Feeding Periodicity And Prey Habitat Preference Of Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus (Poey, 1860) On Alabama Artificial Reefs, Jessica R. Mccawley, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp Jan 2006

Feeding Periodicity And Prey Habitat Preference Of Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus (Poey, 1860) On Alabama Artificial Reefs, Jessica R. Mccawley, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp

Gulf of Mexico Science

Conclusive understanding of the role temperate artificial reefs play in the trophic dynamics of Lutjanus campechanus (Poey, 1860) is limited. Thus, diel feeding habits of red snapper on artificial reefs were examined using gut fullness, diet composition, and prey habitat preferences. Red snapper were collected by hook and line from artificial reefs off Alabama in July and Aug. 2000. Examination of stomach contents found red snapper feeding upon fish, demersal crustaceans, and pelagic zooplankton. Although other studies suggest that lutjanids primarily feed nocturnally, red snapper in this study fed throughout the day and night. Significant differences in gut fullness were …

Effects Of Exotic Submerged Aquatic Vegetation On Waterfowl In The Mobile-Tensaw Delta, M.E. Goecker, J.F. Valentine, S.A. Sklenar

Gulf of Mexico Science

Surveys conducted in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, located in the Northern Gulf of Mexico, have documented a 96% decline in waterfowl populations from over 100,000 birds in 1939 to around 4,000 birds in 1999. Coincident with this decline has been the introduction and spread of nonnative Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). Six surveys have documented the replacement of native wild celery (Vallisneria americana), the perceived preferred food for waterfowl, by M. spicatum as the dominant species of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in this setting. Simple comparisons of SAV coverage and waterfowl surveys indicate that declines in waterfowl populations …

Fibrin Gels: A Potential Biomaterial For The Chondrogenesis Of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Melissa Anne Deitzer Jan 2006

Fibrin Gels: A Potential Biomaterial For The Chondrogenesis Of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Melissa Anne Deitzer

Open Access Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a fibrin gel system capable of serving as a three dimensional scaffold for the chondrogenesis of rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and to examine the effect of two fibrinolytic inhibitors, aprotinin and aminohexanoic acid, on this system. Rabbit BM-MSCs were obtained from the tibias and femurs of New Zealand white rabbits. After chondrogenic potential of BM-MSCs was verified by pellet culture, 2 x 106 cells were pelleted and suspended in fibrinogen (80mg/ml) and then mixed with equal parts of thrombin (5 IU/ml). The specimen were then divided into four groups: …
