Oral History Project (all interviews)
Marcia Smith was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Florida when she was two years old. Ms. Smith graduated from Florida State University with a degree in food nutrition specializing in school lunch administration. She later earned masters and Ph.D. degrees from Webber College and Kennedy Western University. She started her career in school foodservice in Polk County, Florida, working with Helen Walker, School Food Service Director and President of the American School Foodservice Association (ASFSA) at that time. “Within the first two weeks of being on the job, I was going to Chicago to the national conference where she …

Building Bridges In Diverse Communities, Susan S. Bjornsen
Building Bridges In Diverse Communities, Susan S. Bjornsen
Theses and Graduate Projects
The communities we Iive in continue to become more culturally diverse which has significant implications for our health care systems. The purpose of this project was to develop a model to be used in bridging the gap between underserved racial and ethnic communities and mainstream healthcare. Nurses can play a seminal role in developing health promotion events in diverse communities directed at promoting healthy lifestyles, developing relationships and gaining new ways of viewing the world. Margaret Newman's theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness influenced the model development and gave insight to vital concepts of the project. Participating in health promotion …

Background: Mediterranean societies, with diets rich in vitamin E isoforms, have a lower risk for colon cancer than those of northern Europe and the Americas. Vitamin E rich diets may neutralize free radicals generated by fecal bacteria in the gut and prevent DNA damage, but signal transduction activities can occur independent of the antioxiclant function. The term vitamin E represents eight structurally related compounds, each differing in their potency and mechanisms of chemoprevention. The RRR-γ-tocopherol isoform is found primarily in the US diet, while RRR-α-tocopherol is highest in the plasma. Methods: The effectiveness of RRR-α-and RRR-γ-tocopherol at inhibiting cell growth …

Variation In The Innate And Acquired Arms Of The Immune System Among Five Shorebird Species, Luisa Mendes, Theunis Piersma, Dennis Hasselquist, Kevin Matson, Robert Ricklefs
Biology Department Faculty Works
To contribute to an understanding of the evolutionary processes that shape variation in immune responses, we compared several components of the innate and acquired arms of the immune system in five related, but ecologically diverse, migratory shorebirds (ruff Philomachus pugnax L., ruddy turnstone Arenaria interpres L., bar-tailed godwit Limosa lapponica L., sanderling Calidris alba Pallas and red knotC. canutus L.). We used a hemolysis-hemagglutination assay in free-living shorebirds to assess two of the innate components (natural antibodies and complement-mediated lysis), and a modified quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in birds held in captivity to assess the acquired component (humoral antibodies against …

Forage Systems For Minimizing Hay And Concentrate Feed Needs, Glen E. Aiken
Forage Systems For Minimizing Hay And Concentrate Feed Needs, Glen E. Aiken
Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Cattlemen typically simplify their pasture management by relying on one or two forages that are well adapted and persist under their targeted levels of management and production. The 5.5 million acres of Kentucky-31 tall fescue in Kentucky is a strong indication how producers in the state rely on the cool-season perennial grass, sometimes in mixture with red or white clover, to meet their grazing needs. An advantage of this approach is that fertilization and grazing management is based on a single growth distribution and set of fertilizer needs. Disadvantages are that yield, growth distribution, and quality of forage may not …

Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe
Cost Of Gain Comparison Between Cattle Finished At Opportunities Farm In South Dakota And Cattle Finished In Kansas, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe
South Dakota Beef Report, 2006
Cost of gain is an important factor in determining the profit or loss of feeder cattle. For comparison of cost of gain between cattle finished in Southeast South Dakota and cattle finished in Southwest Kansas closeouts of cattle fed at the Opportunities Farm near Lennox, SD were compared with information published by Kansas State University in the monthly Focus on Feedlots. Cattle feeders in the Midwest, including South Dakota, are competitive with cattle feeders in other regions of the United States due to this regions lower ration costs and cost of gain.

Faculty Publications
Prp19 is an essential splicing factor and a member of the U-box family of E3 ubiquitin ligases. Prp19 forms a tetramer via a central coiled-coil domain. Here, we show the U-box domain of Prp19 exists as a dimer within the context of the Prp19 tetramer. A high-resolution structure of the homodimeric state of the Prp19 U-box was determined by X-ray crystallography. Mutation of the U-box dimer interface abrogates U-box dimer formation and is lethal in vivo. The structure of the U-box dimer enables construction of a complete model of Prp19 providing insights into how the tetrameric protein functions as an …

Effect Of Single Vs. Pulsing Doses Of Estradiol 17-Β And Trenbolone Acetate In Finishing Steers Fed A High Concentrate Diet, Sandi L. Parr, Robbi H. Pritchard, Kelly W. Bruns
Effect Of Single Vs. Pulsing Doses Of Estradiol 17-Β And Trenbolone Acetate In Finishing Steers Fed A High Concentrate Diet, Sandi L. Parr, Robbi H. Pritchard, Kelly W. Bruns
South Dakota Beef Report, 2006
The effect of implant dosing pattern on anabolic response was evaluated in predominately Angus steers (n=192). Steers, except the control, were implanted with 1 of 3 different implant strategies. Cumulatively all implant treatments received a dose of 24 mg estradiol 17-β (E2) and 120 mg trenbolone acetate (TBA). Dosing patterns were 8 mg E2 and 40 mg TBA given 3 times; 12 mg E2 and 60 mg TBA given 2 times or 24 mg E2 and 120 mg TBA given 1 time. Implanted cattle had heavier body weights, increased average daily gain, and lower feed conversion compared to non-implanted controls. …
