A Study Of The Role Of Survey In Mine Action, Gichd Mar 2006

A Study Of The Role Of Survey In Mine Action, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

"In many ways, mine action management is as much about information as it is about landmines.” This statement was one of the central conclusions of the GICHD Study of Socio-Economic Approaches to Mine Action. In seeking to obtain the necessary information to plan and manage programmes effectively, mine action has seen a considerable number of surveys carried out. In particular, a number of surveys have sought to record the location and scale of hazardous areas, and, increasingly, an assessment of their social and economic impact as well as the success of mine clearance projects.

However, it is a daunting task …

Caribbean Agriculture-Tourism Linkages In A Neoliberal World: Problems And Prospects For St. Lucia, Benjamin F. Timms Mar 2006

Caribbean Agriculture-Tourism Linkages In A Neoliberal World: Problems And Prospects For St. Lucia, Benjamin F. Timms

Social Sciences

The production of agricultural products for export while relying on imported food has long dominated the agricultural sector in the Caribbean, a legacy of the plantation economy. One strategy that can have a positive impact on reducing this dependency is the use of locally grown agricultural products by the hotel sector. However, the formation of linkages has for the most part not materialised due to the tremendous disadvantages domestic agriculture faces in today’s neoliberal world. This article investigates the hurdles that must be overcome if domestic agriculture is to tap into the tourist market. The study of linkages between agriculture …

The Social And Economic Impact Of Sanctions And Time Limits On Recipients Of Temporary Assistance To Needy Families, Taryn Lindhorst, Ronald J. Mancoske

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A central feature of the reforms enacted through the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (welfare reform) has been the adoption of strategies to involuntarily remove Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) recipients from the welfare rolls, including increased use of sanctions and time limits on welfare receipt. Drawing on data from a three year panel study of women who had been receiving welfare in a state which adopted stringent sanctioning and time limit policies, we investigate predictors of recipients' TANF status after implementation of welfare reform, and identify differences in post-reform material resources, hardships and quality of life …

Hydrodynamic Mediation Of Density-Dependent Growth And Adult-Juvenile Interactions Of A Spionid Polychaete, Brent T. Hentschel, Amy A. Larson

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Abstract We performed an experiment to test the effects of adult density on the growth rates of juvenile Polydora cornuta. Our experiment was performed in three identical counter-rotating annular flumes, each set to one of three different flow speeds for a period of 3 d (U 5mm = 3, 6, or 12 cm s-1 , where U5mm = velocity measured 5 mm above bottom). We implanted replicate vials containing a premeasured juvenile P. cornuta and either 0, 2, or 5 adults into a 2-cm layer of sediment in the flume. The relative growth rates of the juveniles …

Epithelial Sodium Channel Allele T594m Is Not Associated With Blood Pressure Or Blood Pressure Response To Amiloride, John M. Hollier, Dan F. Martin, Darin M. Bell, Jia Ling Li, Mike G. Chirachanchai, Dileep V. Menon, David Leonard, Xiaodong Wu, Richard S. Cooper, Colin Mckenzie, Ronald G. Victor, Richard J. Auchus

Faculty Publications

The T594M allele of the epithelial sodium channel β-subunit has been proposed as a gain-of-function mutation leading to salt-sensitive hypertension in blacks that is particularly responsive to the specific sodium channel antagonist amiloride. However, the positive associations derive from small convenience samples, and the amiloride challenge study lacked a control group. We determined whether the T594M allele was associated with hypertension and blood pressure (BP) response to amiloride in 2 well-characterized random population samples including 3137 Dallas County subjects and 1666 Jamaican blacks. In multivariate models, the T594M allele was not predictive of systolic BP (adjusted odds ratio for hypertension …

Interfacing Capillary Gel Microfluidic Chips With Infrared Laser Desorption Mass Spectrometry, Yichuan Xu, Mark W. Little, Kermit K. Murray Mar 2006

Interfacing Capillary Gel Microfluidic Chips With Infrared Laser Desorption Mass Spectrometry, Yichuan Xu, Mark W. Little, Kermit K. Murray

Faculty Publications

We report on the fabrication and performance of a gel microfluidic chip interfaced to laser desorption/ionization (LDI) mass spectrometry with a time-of-flight mass analyzer. The chip was fabricated from poly(methylmethacrylate) with a poly(dimethyl siloxane) cover. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed in the channel of the microfluidic chip. After electrophoresis, the cover was removed and either the PDMS chip or the PMMA cover was mounted in a modified MALDI ion source for analysis. Ions were formed by irradiating the channel with 2.95 μm radiation from a pulsed optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which is coincident with IR absorption by N-H …

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair Mar 2006

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Teaching about the Middle Ages in French culture or literature courses is always an enlightening experience to me because of the richness of symbols, events, and starting points occurring during this time period. Very often, when thinking about the Middle Ages, Christianity, chivalry, and nobility come to mind, all values still of high importance in contemporary Western societies. However, medieval culture presents itself with an array of other behaviors and values, some of which may today be considered as offensive and even sometimes “alienating”: primitive, barbaric, or even animalistic forms of behavior.
