The Water Vapor Permeability Of Polycrystalline Fat Barrier Films, Silvana Martini, D. A. Kim, M. Ollivon, A. G. Marangoni Mar 2006

The Water Vapor Permeability Of Polycrystalline Fat Barrier Films, Silvana Martini, D. A. Kim, M. Ollivon, A. G. Marangoni

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The water vapor permeability of fat barrier films has been associated with structural characteristics such as polymorphism, crystal size, and chemical composition, among others. However, no mechanistic models have been proposed to describe this relationship. In this study, we have determined the effects of processing conditions on the structure and physicochemical characteristics of four fats and their relationship to water vapor permeability. Results suggest that the solids' volume fraction and the domain size of the fat crystals seem to be the most important factors controlling water vapor migration. Moreover, materials with relatively large crystalline domains will yield malleable films with …

Against Freedom Of Commercial Expression, Tamara R. Piety Mar 2006

Against Freedom Of Commercial Expression, Tamara R. Piety

ExpressO

An article that announces itself in the title as “against freedom” has a heavy burden of persuasion to carry. At this time and in this place, it seems almost un-American to be “against freedom,” (however much our civil liberties have in fact been circumscribed in recent years). Nevertheless, the most significant word in the title is not “against” or “freedom,” but “commercial.” Conventional wisdom in the First Amendment area would have it that there is no meaningful basis on which to distinguish between commercial speech and other speech for purposes of the First Amendment. And in recent years the courts …

Global Pharmaceutical Patent Law In Developing Countries- Amending Trips To Promote Access For All, Angela J. Anderson Mar 2006

Global Pharmaceutical Patent Law In Developing Countries- Amending Trips To Promote Access For All, Angela J. Anderson

ExpressO

This comment will analyze the need to amend and revise the current global pharmaceutical patent system under TRIPS to take into account the needs of developing countries and overall public health. This comment will emphasize that the current international trade rules, which although administered by the WTO, are dictated by developed country governments and powerful pharmaceutical companies, and therefore, without reform will further diminish the access of poor people in developing countries to vital medicines. Part II of this comment will provide a general overview of the international trade law governing patents on pharmaceuticals focusing specifically on the development of …

The Legalization Of Fat: Law, Science, And The Construction Of A Moral Panic, Paul Campos Mar 2006

The Legalization Of Fat: Law, Science, And The Construction Of A Moral Panic, Paul Campos

ExpressO

Over the past decade, American public health authorities have made increasingly alarming claims regarding how obesity is becoming the nation’s leading public health problem. These warnings have inspired a flurry of legislative, administrative, and judicial responses, and calls for further legal intervention are issuing constantly from obesity researchers and public health officials. This article surveys and critiques the sudden wave of attempts to use the American legal system to shrink the nation’s waistline The article demonstrates that the health risks associated with the populace’s fairly modest increasing average weight have been greatly exaggerated; that the causal links, if any, between …

Blawgs, Podcasts, Wikis? Deciphering The Lingo And Evaluating Current Awareness Tools, Carol A. Watson

Presentations

Methods and technology for keeping track of current legal news range from simple to advanced. Simple methods such as becoming familiar with legal news web sites and visiting them regularly are still highly effective. More advanced technologies such as blogs and podcasts offer more diverse methods of delivering information by using sound and video (as opposed to reading plain text). Armed with basic knowledge about these new tools, you can make informed decisions about which technologies can increase your current awareness knowledge.

Guarding Against The High Risk Of High-Deductible Health Plans: A Proposal For Regulatory Protections, Michele Melden Mar 2006

Guarding Against The High Risk Of High-Deductible Health Plans: A Proposal For Regulatory Protections, Michele Melden

ExpressO

High deductible health plans are a cornerstone of "consumer-driven health care." This article explores a number of myths promoted by proponents of such plans and challenges these myths to discuss the various ways such plans pose risks to consumers both individually and generally. While most articles on this topic explore the arguments for and against such plans, this article, unlike others, proposes specific regulatory protections with model language. In fact, this article already has been used as the basis for testimony before the California State Assembly which, for the first time, has introduced legislation aimed at regulating such plans and …

A Dual-Genome Microarray For The Pea Aphid, Acyrthosiphon Pisum, And Its Obligate Bacterial Symbiont, Buchnera Aphidicola, Alex C. C. Wilson, Helen E. Dunbar, Gregory K. Davis, Wayne B. Hunter, David L. Stern, Nancy A. Moran

Biology Articles and Papers

Background

The best studied insect-symbiont system is that of aphids and their primary bacterial endosymbiont Buchnera aphidicola. Buchnera inhabits specialized host cells called bacteriocytes, provides nutrients to the aphid and has co-speciated with its aphid hosts for the past 150 million years. We have used a single microarray to examine gene expression in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, and its resident Buchnera. Very little is known of gene expression in aphids, few studies have examined gene expression in Buchnera, and no study has examined simultaneously the expression profiles of a host and its symbiont. Expression profiling …

Solace And Security At The Cairo Refugee Demonstration, Stacy Schafer Mar 2006

Solace And Security At The Cairo Refugee Demonstration, Stacy Schafer

Faculty Journal Articles

Over the course of a 92 day sit-in, Sudanese refugees demonstrating in a park in downtown Cairo formed a close-knit community. They preferred to remain outside in a public park indefinitely to other options available to them. Who these protestors were and the reasons for their prolonged stay were a matter of contention from the first days of their demonstration. This paper incorporates my research conducted during the demonstration in order to understand the factors that drew these refugees to protest for such an extended period of time. While consistently demanding that the UNHCR and international community give them ‘their …

Evaluating The Predictiveness Of A Continuous Marker, Ying Huang, Margaret S. Pepe, Ziding Feng Mar 2006

Evaluating The Predictiveness Of A Continuous Marker, Ying Huang, Margaret S. Pepe, Ziding Feng

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Consider a continuous marker for predicting a binary outcome. For example, serum concentration of prostate specific antigen (PSA) may be used to calculate the risk of finding prostate cancer in a biopsy. In this paper we argue that the predictive capacity of a marker has to do with the population distribution of risk given the marker and suggest a graphical tool, the predictiveness curve, that displays this distribution. The display provides a common meaningful scale for comparing markers that may not be comparable on their original scales. Some existing measures of predictiveness are shown to be summary indices derived from …

“No One Can Serve Two Masters”: A Separation Of Powers Solution For Conflicts Of Interest Within The Department Of Health And Human Services, Vale Krenik

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment examines the financial conflicts of interests within the DHHS that results in private influence, the consequential impact of the private influence on the agency's constitutionality under the nondelegation and separation of powers doctrines, and offers a solution that better conforms to the principles and structure of the United States Constitution. Part II examines the penetration of conflicts of interests within the DHHS and impact on drug safety and human lives. Part III discusses the separation of powers doctrine and the development of the nondelegation doctrine with respect to delegations to private groups. Part IV analyzes the constitutionality of …
