Life Threatening Mediastinal Haematoma: A Complication Of Central Venous Catheterization, Omer Ashraf, Hasanat Sharif Mar 2006

Life Threatening Mediastinal Haematoma: A Complication Of Central Venous Catheterization, Omer Ashraf, Hasanat Sharif

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Central venous catheterization (CVC) has established risks and benefits in its application as a vascular access source, particularly in situations involving temporary cannulation. We present a rare case of life-threatening mediastinal haematoma resulting from CVC usage. Even though aggressive intervention yielded survival, the patient was left with permanent vocal compromise owing to traumatic palsy of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve. One should be careful in selection of venous access and be aware of alternatives routes.

Animal Rights Without Controversy, Cass R. Sunstein, Jeff Leslie Mar 2006

Animal Rights Without Controversy, Cass R. Sunstein, Jeff Leslie

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Many consumers would be willing to pay something to reduce the suffering of animals used as food. The problem is that existing markets do not disclose the relevant treatment of animals, even though that treatment would trouble many consumers. Steps should be taken to promote disclosure, so as to fortify market processes and to promote democratic discussion of the treatment of animals. In the context of animal welfare, a serious problem is that people’s practices ensure outcomes that defy their existing moral commitments. A disclosure regime could improve animal welfare without making it necessary to resolve the most deeply contested …

Analysis Of Bacterial Population And Distribution In The Developing Strata Of A Constructed Wetland Used For Chlorinated Ethene Bioremediation, Milton J. Clausen Jr. Mar 2006

Analysis Of Bacterial Population And Distribution In The Developing Strata Of A Constructed Wetland Used For Chlorinated Ethene Bioremediation, Milton J. Clausen Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Chlorinated hydrocarbons and their degradation products are among of the most common organic groundwater contaminates in the United States. These compounds attack the central nervous system in animals and can affect the photosynthesis of plants. These compounds are also resistant to degradation in the environment and, because of this, pose a risk to any ecosystem in which they are present. This study identified the dominant microbial species in a constructed treatment wetland at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Samples were taken from three different depths and during each of the four seasons. These samples were …

Challenging The Status Quo: Campus Community School, Allen Zipke, Marcy Zipke

Essays in Education

Campus Community School is a 300-student charter school in Dover, DE, which serves children in grades 1 through 8. As a new charter school the founders have had the opportunity to build our ideal school, from designing a constructivist project-based curriculum, to implementing site based management, and focusing heavily on parent participation. This essay illustrates how well the charter school model can work. As the administrator and one of the founding members of CCS, I describe our challenges and hurdles as well as successes.

Baby Boabs : The Exciting New Taste Sensation From The Kimberley In Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Baby boabs are the seedling stage of the large boab trees found in the Kimberley region. The seed of the fruit found in pods attached to the tree is planted and then grown for approximately 16 weeks depending on the season. This produces a tuber up to 30 centimetres long, with fresh, succulent, edible leaves on top.

The boab tubers are very versatile and can be used in most dishes both raw and cooked. The texture of the tubers are crisp and crunchy like that of a water chestnut but with a refreshing taste that can adapt to the other …

Perceived Health Status And Needs Of Elders Of The Spirit Lake Nation, Eileen M. Tabert Mar 2006

Perceived Health Status And Needs Of Elders Of The Spirit Lake Nation, Eileen M. Tabert

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic disease inflicts a huge financial and collective burden on the people of this nation. Disparities in chronic disease and health risk behaviors do exist for Native Americans. The multiple disparities of the Spirit Lake Nation are identified through the use of the survey tool that was developed by the National Resource Center of Native American Aging. The quantitative descriptive study collected self-reported data related to perceived health status, behavioral risk factors, chronic disease, and other demographic information among the Spirit Lake Nation elders.

A health promotion and disease prevention model that influences self care appeared to be the most …

Relationships Between The Immune System And Stress Reactivity In Pig: Visualizing The Immuno-Neuroendocrine Framework In Action, Sanipa Suradhat Mar 2006

Relationships Between The Immune System And Stress Reactivity In Pig: Visualizing The Immuno-Neuroendocrine Framework In Action, Sanipa Suradhat

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Activation of the immune system is regulated through several mechanisms, within the system itself and by other body systems, in order to maintain disease resistance, and prevent immune-mediated disorders within the host. It is well accepted that the immunological, physiological, behavioral, and psychological state of an animal are closely linked and the factors affecting one feature of the network can influence the rest of the system. In recent years, our understanding of the interactions between the neuroendocrine network (i.e. the hypothalamicp tuitary- adrenal axis, HPA) and immune-mediated inflammatory reactions has expanded enormously. This article outlines the nature of the immuno-neuroendocrine network …

Causes And Mechanisms, An Interview With Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, Samuel S. Gidding Mar 2006

Causes And Mechanisms, An Interview With Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, Samuel S. Gidding

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Dr. Jeremiah Stamler began his career in New York City and moved to Chicago in 1947 with his wife Rose, to accept a basic research position with Dr. Louis N. Katz. Early animal studies convinced him of the role of dietary factors, particularly cholesterol and salt, in the etiology of atherosclerotic vascular disease. Because of a strong interest in public health, he began the first of many population based cohort studies in the 1950s that subsequently defined the role of health behaviors (adverse nutrition choices, tobacco use, low physical activity) and associated measurable biologic traits, now called risk factors, in …

Using Games To Promote Girls' Positive Attitudes Toward Technology, Richard Van Eck Mar 2006

Using Games To Promote Girls' Positive Attitudes Toward Technology, Richard Van Eck

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

Studies show that women make up only 35% of the IT workforce, and the schism between boys' and girls' interests in math and science is well documented. Richard Van Eck suggests that providing girls with more positive experiences with technology may impact their overall attitudes toward technology and perhaps even toward math and science. Van Eck chose games, naturally engaging experiences, as the basis of a two-semester study involving 92 fifth- and sixth-graders participating in game playing and authoring experiences in the classroom. He analyzes the differences in experience, attitude, and interest level between boys and girls. His results suggest …

Effects Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid And Exercise On Bone Mass In Young Male Balb/C Mice, Jameela Banu, Arunabh Bhattacharya, Mizanur Rahman, Marianne O'Shea, Gabriel Fernandes

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

There is an increase in obesity among the population of industrialized countries, and dietary supplementation with Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) has been reported to lower body fat mass. However, weight loss is generally associated with negative effects on bone mass, but CLA is reported to have beneficial effects on bone. Furthermore, another factor that is well established to have a beneficial effect on bone is exercise (EX). However, a combination therapy of CLA and EX on bone health has not been studied. In this paper, we report the beneficial effects of CLA and EX on bone, in four different groups …
